Gerstmann's syndrome is a neurological disorder characterized by four primary symptoms: a writing disability (agraphia or dysgraphia), a lack of understanding of the rules for calculation or arithmetic (acalculia or dyscalculia), an inability to distinguish right from left, and an inability to identify fingers (finger agnosia). The disorder should not be confused with a type of transmissible spongiform encephalopathy. In adults, the syndrome may occur after a stroke or in association with damage to the parietal lobe. In addition to exhibiting the above symptoms, many adults also experience aphasia, (difficulty in expressing oneself when speaking, in understanding speech, or in reading and writing). There are few reports of the syndrome, sometimes called

My granddaughter was diagnosed with Gerstmann's Syndrome when she was seven years old, and once more last year. She is now sixteen. She has received special help with her schooling and manages to squeak by. But there have been no signs of improvement.
We have been unable to find any information about this condition and we don't know if we can help her, or how. I would be very grateful to hear from someone who is familiar with Gerstmann's and could enlighten us. Next Article
