Genital Warts (Human papillomavirus)
Anogenital warts are usually small flat warts or bumps found on or around the penis, anus or vagina. Certain types of the human papillomavirus (HPV) cause them and anyone having unprotected vaginal or anal sex or sexual contact can get them. Warts can be uncomfortable or embarrassing but may also be a sign of a serious health problem as certain HPV types (not ones that cause warts) have been associated with cervical cancer. Warts are the most common viral STI diagnosed in the UK, with highest rates of new cases in 20-24 year old men and women. Genital herpes is caused by the herpes simplex virus. The virus can affect the mouth, the genital area, the skin around the anus and the fingers. Once the first outbreak of herpes is over, the virus hides away in the nerve fibres, where it remains totally undetected and causes no symptoms. However, in some people, genital herpes may come back (recur) on the skin surface, at or near the place where it was caught. This may be when the person is ill or run down. Some people never get another outbreak. Types of the virus There are two types of the genital herpes virus. Either type is infectious, but:
  • Type I infects the mouth or nose. It is more likely to recur than if Type II infects this area.
  • Type II infects the genital and anal area, it is more likely to recur than if Type I infects this area.

Benign Genital Warts (Condylomata acuminata) - Human papillomavirus (HPV)
Epidemiology: This STD is not a reportable disease, but may be the most common STD in the US. It is estimated that there are between 500,000 to 1 million cases per year.
Lesions: Condylomata acuminata are dry, friable ("cauliflower-like") lesions that occur in the perineal area, glans penis, perianal area, vulva, urethral area and intra-urethral area. The lesions may be fulminating and rapidly growing.
Clinical manifestations: In men with intra-urethral warts the chief complaint may be the spraying of urine. Upon intra-urethral inspection, a genital wart that causes turbulence in the urinary flow can be found. It is important to distinguish between the lesions of condylomata acuminatum and those of condylomata latum seen in secondary syphilis.
Treatment: Podophyllum may be applied topically to remove smaller lesions. However, if lesions are too extensive, surgery may have to be performed.

Genital Warts
What are genital warts?
Genital warts are tiny growths that appear in the genital and anal areas of the body. They are also called condylomata acuminata or venereal warts, and are caused by human papillomavirus (HPV).
How do they occur?
Like other warts, genital warts are caused by a virus. Genital warts are contagious and may be passed from person to person by contact through sexual activity. They are more contagious, or more easily spread, than other warts. Genital warts do not appear immediately after contact but are usually first seen 1 to 6 months after a person has been infected. It is also possible to be infected with the virus without developing any visible warts.

Disease Index NJ InTouch What You Should Know About. . . Genital Warts/Papillomarivus (HPV) Genital HPV (human papillomavirus) is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases in the United States. As many as one million cases of genital warts are diagnosed each year.
What Is HPV?
HPV is the name of a group of viruses that includes more than 60 different types. Certain types of HPV cause warts on the hands or feet, while others can cause visible genital warts. However, sometimes HPV infection causes no warts, and many people with genital HPV do not know they have it.
What Do Genital Warts Look Like?
Genital warts are growths or bumps that appear on the vulva, in or around the vagina or anus, on the cervix, and on the penis, scrotum, groin, or thigh. They may be raised or flat, single or multiple, small or large. Some cluster together forming a cauliflower-like shape.
What About HPV That Causes No Visible Warts?
Sometimes HPV causes very subtle changes on the skin that can't be seen with the naked eye. Health care providers can find these "microscopic warts" only with the help of special instruments. In other cases, HPV can live in the skin without causing any warts at all. This is called "clinically inapparent" or "subclinical" HPV infection.

Genital warts are small fleshy lumps that can grow around the anal and genital region in men and women. They are only rarely found in the mouth. They are caused by infection with the genital wart virus - human papilloma virus, (HPV). How do you get genital warts? Infection with the HPV is common. The virus is usually sexually transmitted and therefore it can occur any time after your first sexual experience. It can also be passed from mother to baby at birth. Can they be treated? Genital warts can be treated. Common methods used are:
  • freezing the warts
  • applying certain creams or liquids
  • burning the warts using electrical heat or laser energy.
Even though warts are removed, some of the virus may stay alive in the skin and cause more warts. This means more than one treatment may be needed to get rid of all the visible warts. Don't use over-the-counter treatments for warts on sensitive genital skin. Are sexual partners likely to get warts too?

Most people who become infected with HPV will not have any symptoms and will clear the infection on their own. Some of these viruses are called “high-risk” types, and may cause abnormal Pap tests. They may also lead to cancer of the cervix, vulva, vagina, anus, or penis. Others are called “low-risk” types, and they may cause mild Pap test abnormalities or genital warts. Genital warts are single or multiple growths or bumps that appear in the genital area, and sometimes are cauliflower shaped. Approximately 20 million people are currently infected with HPV. At least 50 percent of sexually active men and women acquire genital HPV infection at some point in their lives. By age 50, at least 80 percent of women will have acquired genital HPV infection. About 6.2 million Americans get a new genital HPV infection each year.

the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) Home Information : Genital Warts and the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV): Genital warts are small lumps that may grow on the genitals in men or women. They are caused by viruses similar to those that cause warts on hands or feet. These viruses all belong to the family called human papilloma viruses (HPV). This large family has more than 100 different members, which prefer different types of skin. For example, warts that grow on hands or feet are unlikely to grow on genital skin. About 30 types of HPV prefer the genital area and may infect the skin or lining of the vulva, vagina, cervix, anus, penis and occasionally the mouth. A few of these types can cause the lumps known as genital warts. Many other types never cause visible warts and can only be detected on a Pap smear, or by special microscope or laboratory tests. How do you get genital warts?
The HPV virus is usually passed on during sexual activity. This may be through direct skin contact, or the virus may be carried in body fluids from the genital skin of one person to the genital skin of another. If the skin is broken it is more likely that an infection will start. Once a person is infected with HPV, small lumps may appear on the skin after a few weeks. Sometimes the virus may just remain in the skin and be invisible (this is called sub-clinical infection). It is often impossible to tell how long someone may have had the virus, or when they first caught it.

Genital warts
Nearly two million people in the United States are infected every year with genital warts, which are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV) . Genital warts are spread through vaginal, anal, and oral intercourse. They can also be passed on to infants during childbirth.
  • Not always able to be seen, the warts are soft and flat; they grow on the genitals, in the urethra, the inner vagina, the anus, or the throat. The warts often itch and, if allowed to grow, can block openings of the vagina, anus, or throat, causing discomfort. Because genital warts are often unseen, they can easily be passed onto sexual partners.
Genital warts can be treated in several ways, including topical medical creams. In cases of either large or persistent warts, other treatments may include surgical removal, freezing using liquid nitrogen, or cauterization by electric needles; however, the warts often recur.

Human Papillomavirus and Genital Warts
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the most common causes of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in the United States. Experts estimate that as many as 24 million Americans are infected with HPV, and the incidence of the diseases it causes appears to be increasing. More than 60 types of HPV have been identified by scientists. Some types of the virus cause common skin warts. About one-third of the HPV types can be spread through sexual contact. Several types of HPV can lead to genital warts, the most recognizable sign of genital HPV infection. Certain other types of HPV have been closely associated with the development of cervical cancer and other genital cancers. Like many STDs, HPV infection often does not cause visible symptoms. One study reported that almost half of the women infected with HPV had no obvious symptoms. Because the virus can remain latent in the skin, infected persons may not be aware of their infection and the potential risk of transmission to others and of developing complications.

Genital Warts
Q:
Several weeks ago my boyfriend was diagnosed by his dermatologist in Beverly Hills, California as having an active case of genital warts on his penis. He received treatment in the office on two visits, consisting of some sort of burning to the small rash-like warts, and was given some cream to take home to put on several times a week. This cream also caused a burning sensation, but he appeared to be cleared within 3 weeks. His MD strongly suggested that I needed to be seen by a GYN to be scoped and RNA tested. I was seen by my GYN who told me I was negative and that no further visits were necessary. There seems to be a great discrepancy between the information provided to both of us by our respective physicians. Due to the outstanding reputation, recognition and prominence of his physician, he is inclined to only accept his information and suggestions. My GYN strongly rejects the Beverly Hills dermatologist's opinion that the genital warts received by my boyfriend were contracted through handshaking with one of his friends and that any recurrences are extremely rare. Please assist me in determining the most reliable information currently available on this subject.
A: Genital warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) and are usually sexually transmitted. What gets confusing is that there are over 30 types of HPV, some like types 1, 2, and 3 which cause warts on fingers, type 4 which likes the bottom of the feet, and types 6 and 11 which are the genital ones. Several HPV types are linked to cancer risk, like type 35 for cervical cancer.
