PDF Version of this Fact Sheet Genital warts are caused by a virus Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is the virus that causes genital warts. There are many different types of HPV. Genital warts are different from warts found on the hands or feet. Infection with HPV is spread by sexual contact or from mother to baby HPV infection is spread from person to person through direct skin contact during vaginal, anal, or oral sex with someone who has genital warts. A baby can get the virus if the mother has genital warts at the time of delivery. Genital warts look like small bumps or cauliflower-like clusters on the external (outside) or internal (inside) genitals
  • Genital warts appear 6 weeks to 8 months after contact with an HPV infected person. Since genital warts can occur on the internal genitals, they may be hard to see. Sometimes the infection doesn't cause any warts, and many people with HPV do not know they have it.

Genital warts (sometimes called condyloma), are usually caused by a sexually transmitted viral infection that is common among men and women in the United States today. Warts in the genital area are easily passed from person to person. In fact, practitioners who examine the sexual partners of people with genital warts find that between two-thirds and four-fifths of the partners have warts. It is not suprising, then, that genital warts are now one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases in the United States. Although this infection is on the rise, much can be done to treat as well as prevent genital warts. What causes Genital Warts? Genital warts are caused by a virus called human papilloma virus (HPV). This wart virus may be transmitted during vaginal sexual intercourse, oral sex, and anal sex. These viruses can infect any sexually active person. However, people with more than one sexual partner or people who have had other sexually transmitted diseases are at greater risk for this infection. How can I find out if I have Genital Warts?

Definition
Genital warts , which are also called condylomata acuminata or venereal warts, are growths in the genital area caused by a sexually transmitted papillomavirus. A papillomavirus is a virus that produces papillomas, or benign growths on the skin and mucous membranes.
Description
Genital warts are the most common sexually transmitted disease (STD) in the general population. It is estimated that 1% of sexually active people between the ages of 18 and 45 have genital warts; however, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing indicates that as many as 40% of sexually active adults carry the human papillomavirus (HPV) that causes genital warts. Genital warts vary somewhat in appearance. They may be either flat or resemble raspberries or cauliflower in appearance. The warts begin as small red or pink growths and grow as large as four inches across, interfering with intercourse and childbirth . The warts grow in the moist tissues of the genital areas. In women, they occur on the external genitals and on the walls of the vagina and cervix; in men, they develop in the urethra and on the shaft of the penis. The warts then spread to the area behind the genitals surrounding the anus. Risk factors for genital warts include:
  • multiple sexual partners
  • infection with another STD
  • pregnancy
  • anal intercourse
  • poor personal hygiene
  • heavy perspiration
Causes and symptoms
There are about 80 types of human papillomavirus. Genital warts are caused by HPV types 1, 2, 6, 11, 16, and 18. HPV is transmitted by sexual contact. The incubation period varies from one to six months.

What is human papillomavirus or HPV?
HPVs make up a group of more than 100 types of viruses. Most HPVs do no harm to a person. They are called papillomaviruses because they tend to cause warts, or papillomas . Warts are benign (noncancerous) growths. Different types of HPVs cause the warts that grow on the hands and soles of the feet, as well as those that grow on the mouth and genital area. The types of HPV that cause warts on the hands and feet do not cause genital warts. About 30 types of HPV are spread through sexual contact, causing infection and genital warts. These types of HPV can also cause cancer of the cervix (opening to the uterus, or womb) and other genital cancers. HPV is one of the most common causes of sexually transmitted disease (STD). And, 75 percent of people with HPV infection have no symptoms at all.

HPV and genital warts ~ treatments
At the moment, there is no treatment for HPV, but there are treatments to get rid of genital warts. Warts may be removed by applying a chemical treatment, freezing them or removing them surgically, depending on the size and location of the warts. Some of these treatments may take up to three months, or longer, and because the virus may still be in your body, warts often come back even after treatment.
Podophyllin Podophyllin is a chemical treatment derived from a plant extract. It is applied as a mild solution directly to genital warts. Podophyllin is poisonous to human cells and stops warts from growing by interrupting the natural growth process of the body's skin cells. It must only be applied by a trained healthcare professional, and a petroleum jelly should be applied to the skin around the warts to protect it from irritation or burns. The treatment must be washed off four hours after application or it will burn your skin.

HPV and genital warts
Human papilloma virus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection seen at sexual health clinics in the UK and it is likely that most of us have had HPV at some time in our lives - although we may not have known it. So what is HPV, how can it be prevented and treated, and what does papilloma mean anyway? Papilloma means a growth or wart, which is why HPV is also known as the wart virus. In practical terms, however, only about 10% of people with HPV develop warts. The vast majority of people with HPV don't, and are therefore unlikely to know they are infected or that they may be passing the virus to their sexual partner(s). Young sexually active people are at greatest risk of getting genital HPV, with the highest rate of infection in those between the ages of 20 and 24. Recent research suggests that many young women may become infected with the virus during their first sexual experience, and the risk of infection increases with the number of sexual partners. HPV prevalence seems to decrease with age.

Genital Warts What you need to know:
About 1 percent of all sexually active people have genital warts. They are caused by a large group of viruses called human papillomaviruses, some of which carry a risk of cervical cancer.
Genital warts are usually pink, white or gray, and they appear in small clusters. They can be hard to see, especially when they are in the internal genital tract. They may itch or burn.
Sometimes pregnancy-related hormones cause genital warts to grow or get larger. Pregnant women sometimes pass the infection to their babies. If a baby gets infected, warts can grow on the vocal cords during childhood.
What you can do: Tell your health care provider if you think you may have genital warts. If the warts grow large or uncomfortable, they can be safely removed during pregnancy with laser surgery or cryotherapy (freezing). You can protect yourself from sexually transmitted infections by following these guidelines:
  • Have sex with only one partner who does not have sex with anyone else and who does not use drugs.

Anogenital warts (also called condylomas) are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). They occur predominantly in sexually active young adults, and have a variety of forms. They are common, with a million consultations annually in the USA, and over 50,000 newly diagnosed patients in the UK every year.
Bandolier was asked whether a recent editorial [1] suggesting that self-administered treatments were effective was correct. How can anyone tell? This seemed like a good excuse for a swift search for evidence as an exemplar of how a rapid review might be helpful and how it could be performed by a healthcare professional for, say, a health authority or primary care group wanting to make policy.
Search
Two self-administered treatments were mentioned, imiquimod and podophyllotoxin creams. The way forward seemed to be to look for high quality and relevant trials. The ideal would be randomised double blind trials of self-administered treatment versus placebo in patients with properly diagnosed anogenital warts. Therefore the search used PubMed, the names of the treatments, and the subheading of randomised controlled trials. The Cochrane Library was also searched using a similar strategy. Searches revealed no previous systematic reviews.
For each treatment there was a page or two of possibly useful references (about 30-40). Most could be dismissed by reading the abstracts online. About 20 papers seemed relevant, and were ordered from the library.

What are genital warts?
Genital warts are one of the most common STDs (Sexually Transmitted Diseases) in the United States. Genital warts (condylomata acuminata), are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) and usually occur in the genital and rectal areas; they can also occur in the mouth or other areas. Common skin warts of the hands or feet are caused by a similar virus, but they do not cause genital warts.
What is HPV?
HPV is a virus consisting of more than 70 different types. Certain types cause genital warts. Sometimes HPV will not cause any symptoms at all but is still capable of being transmitted because the virus (HPV) is present in the tissue of the genitals or rectum. This is called an "asymptomatic infection" . HPV can also cause warts that appear flat on the surface of the skin or in areas where they are difficult to be seen (i.e. inside the penis or vagina or on the cervix); this is called a "subclinical infection"
How do I know if I have genital warts?
Genital warts may appear several weeks after exposure to HPV. Some may take months to appear or they may never appear. When they are visible, the warts appear singly or in clusters. They are pink/red or brown in color and may be flat or raised resembling tiny cauliflowers. On dry body areas they can be smaller, firm, pink, brown or yellow-to-grey in color.

Condyloma Acuminata/Genital Warts/HPV Definition
Condyloma acuminata is the official name for a type of wart that appears on the genital area of men and women ( see image ). These warts appear on the penis and around the anus in men, and on any part of the external genitals - vaginal lips, perineum (area between the vagina and anus), and anus in women. They also occur inside the vagina and on the cervix. They may occur singly, or in groups. Sometimes they itch or burn, but often they have no symptoms at all. This type of wart is sexually transmitted. It is highly contagious. The incubation period - the amount of time between contact with a person who has condyloma and the time you notice condyloma - typically ranges from three weeks to eight months, with an average of three months. Condyloma may, however, appear years after a person has been exposed. Transmission
Condyloma are caused by a virus called human papillomavirus (HPV). The virus is generally sexually transmitted in adults. Some people apparently can have the virus, not show any signs of condyloma and still transmit the virus to a partner, who may develop condyloma. Since HPV can have such a long incubation period, it is often not possible to determine how you contracted it. Evaluation
Some strains of HPV seem to be related to the occurrence of genital cancer, especially cancer of the cervix. Therefore, if you have condyloma, it should be thoroughly evaluated and treated.

HUMAN PAPILLOMAVIRUS (HPV)
HPV is thought to be one of the most common viral STI. HPV is a virus that is spread through sex or close skin-to-skin, genital area contact with someone who is infected. There are different types of HPV that can cause different problems. Many people can be infected with HPV and not know it. Some kinds of HPV can cause genital warts. Other types can lead to cancer.
Genital Warts
For a woman who is pregnant, it's not certain what effect genital warts have on her baby. The baby may be at risk of getting an HPV infection in the throat, but experts don't believe that the warts are passed along to the baby very often. If you think you may have genital warts you should see your doctor. If you do have genital warts, no treatment can guarantee that you will be cured of your HPV infection. However, treating your warts may lower your risk of passing them along to others. Your doctor may apply medication directly onto the warts. He or she may also give you medication that you apply to your warts yourself. Even when they are treated, warts often return. But over time many people eventually clear HPV from their bodies, and don't get any more warts. The types of HPV that cause genital warts do not cause cancer. But, because you could have more than one type of HPV you could be at risk for both warts and cancer.

genital warts, Factsheet 60 Revised January 2004. genital warts are a sexually transmitted infection caused by a virus called the human papilloma virus (HPV).
http://www.aidsmap.com/publications/factsheets/fs60.htm
Genital Warts Factsheet 60 - Revised January 2004 Genital warts are a sexually transmitted infection caused by a virus called the human papilloma virus (HPV). Genital warts are the most common complaint diagnosed at sexually transmitted diseases clinics in the UK, accounting for around a fifth of all diagnoses in 1999. During the late 1990s, there was a rising incidence of genital warts in the UK, affecting both men and women, and in 1999 there were 70,000 cases. Though younger people tend to be more frequently affected, anyone who is sexually active may be exposed to the genital wart virus. Some forms of the genital wart virus can lead to cervical or anal cancer. This risk is higher in people with HIV because there is more chance that the wart virus will become re-activated due to loss of immunity. Transmission The genital wart virus can be contracted during unprotected anal, vaginal or oral sex. It can also be transmitted by close physical contact with the genital warts themselves, as these may shed the wart virus. Prevention Using a condom for anal, vaginal, or oral sex offers a degree of protection from infection with genital warts, or from passing on the virus to somebody else. People who are sexually active are advised to have regular sexual health check-ups, where genital warts can be diagnosed if present, and tests for other sexually transmitted infections performed. Most HIV treatment centres have an associated sexual health clinic where free and confidential treatment can be obtained without referral from your GP or HIV doctor.

Overview Genital warts, also known as condylomata acuminata or venereal warts, are one of the most common types of sexually transmitted diseases. New genital wart infections affect about 5.5 million Americans each year. As the name suggests, genital warts affect the moist tissues of the genital area. They may look like small, flesh-colored bumps or have a cauliflower-like appearance. Sometimes they may be only 1 to 2 millimeters in diameter. In other situations, the warts may multiply into clusters, which can be quite large.

There are a number of myths surrounding this complicated infection, and a discussion of genital warts, including the common symptoms, diagnostic tests available, and treatment options can help women gain the knowledge necessary to understand this condition. We are unsure of how many women are infected with the virus, HPV, that causes genital warts. Some medical studies show that 1 out of every 10 women has HPV, while others reveal an incidence of up to 1 out of every 2 (50%)! HPV, short for Human Papilloma Virus, is a virus that can infect humans through sexual contact, or, less commonly, through prolonged exposure to such things as shared underwear or swimming clothes. There are over 70 different types of this virus. Like most viruses HPV can infect someone without that person knowing it, and can "set up shop" inside their body for many years before causing symptoms. In some lucky individuals, HPV is present in their tissues but never causes symptoms. (In these people sophisticated and expensive diagnostic tests can sometimes reveal the presence of HPV). In others HPV causes abnormal Pap smears. This is the number one cause of highly abnormal Pap smears, although there are certainly other causes of abnormal Pap smears. Patients often have a difficult time understanding that HPV

Experts estimate that as many as 24 million Americans are infected with HPV, and the frequency of infection and disease appears to be increasing. More than 60 types of HPV have been identified by scientists. Some types of the virus cause common skin warts. About one-third of the HPV types are spread through sexual contact and live only in genital tissue. Low-risk types of HPV cause genital warts, the most recognizable sign of genital HPV infection. Other high-risk types of HPV cause cervical cancer and other genital cancers. Like many sexually transmitted organisms, HPV usually causes a silent infection, that is one that does not have visible symptoms. One study sponsored by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) reported that almost half of the women infected with HPV had no obvious symptoms. Because the viral infection persists, individuals may not be aware of their infection or the potential risk of transmission to others and of developing complications.
