gastrointestinal disorders (GI)
The gastrointestinal (GI) tract is a complex system of organs involved in the transport, digestion, and absorption of nutrients. It also plays an important role in the excretion of toxic chemicals, pathogens, and by-products of digestive processes, and in balancing the absorption and secretion of electrolytes and water. Gastrointestinal diseases that interfere with these processes can have severe consequences in the quality of life for the people that suffer from them.
important GI diseases
current treatments
Medical treatments and nutrition adjustments are the primary interventions for gastrointestinal diseases; frequently used medications include anti-inflammatories, immunosuppressants, antibiotics, corticosteroids and antidiarrheals. The goals of treatment are to correct nutritional deficiencies, control inflammation and relieve painful symptoms. Vitamins, nutritional supplements, and balanced diets are also recommended for patients.
the role of glucagon-like peptide 2
Glucagon-like peptide 2 (GLP-2) is a hormone that regulates the growth, proliferation and maintenance of the mucosal lining of the small intestine. Although the complete physiological function and exact mechanism of action of this peptide are still being established, preclinical studies have indicated that treatment with GLP-2 could produce a significant increase in both the mass and absorptive surface area of the inner lining of the small bowel. Intestinal absorption has been demonstrably improved following therapeutic administration of GLP-2 in animals. In addition, GLP-2 appears to have biological activity exclusively in the GI system, with no major organs or tissues affected.

Drug-induced Gastrointestinal Disorders (05/Jul/02)
The gastrointestinal tract is frequently the site of complications resulting from prescription and over-the-counter drug use. If unrecognized or untreated, over time, these complications have the potential to affect nutritional status. Healthcare professionals need to be aware of the drugs commonly implicated in causing gastrointestinal complaints in order to prevent long-term complications. Patients should be alerted to the early warning signs of drug-induced gastrointestinal disorders so that they can seek care and prevent long-term complications.
Introduction
In the United States, the 1.5 billion or more prescriptions dispensed each year play an important role in managing disease. However, medications are associated with an increasing incidence of drug-induced (iatrogenic) complications. The gastrointestinal tract (GI) is frequently the site of such complications. According to one study, the gastrointestinal tract was associated with 20% to 40% of the drug-induced adverse effects.
Many gastrointestinal side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, dyspepsia, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, or constipation, occur without any identifiable lesion or cause. Usually, these effects are transient and resolve shortly after the drug is discontinued. However, there are some widely prescribed drugs that cause serious and lasting adverse effects (mucosal ulceration, stricture, or increased susceptibility to pseudomembranous colitis). In some situations, the adverse effects are worse than the illness for which the drug was prescribed.

    What The Study Showed
Poor coping skills in life (such as tending to think the worst will always happen) were linked to increased stomach upset in the women who were recruited for this 2000 study done at the University of North Carolina. The findings were published in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine. How It Was Done
Investigators recruited 239 female patients from the university's gastroenterology clinic. All were seeking treatment for gastrointestinal disorders, such as Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). At the start of the 12-month study, the women filled out a series of questionnaires detailing their medical history. They were also interviewed in depth about their gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms and any history of physical or sexual abuseboth types of traumatic events that have been linked to stomach problems. In addition, the patients were closely questioned about their coping style. For example, if their disease symptoms were to worsen, were they likely to deny the problem or attempt to actively solve it? How did they deal with chronic pain? By worrying that it would never end, for example? Over the course of the study, the participants periodically answered additional questionnaires designed to assess their level of psychological distress and quality of life. The development of new or altered symptoms were also recorded, as were the number of visits to doctors, clinics, and hospitals.
