Gastrointestinal functional and motility disorders A functional disorder refers to a disorder or disease where the primary abnormality is an altered physiological function (the way the body works) rather than an identifiable structural or biochemical cause. It characterizes a disorder that generally can not be diagnosed in a traditional way; that is, as an inflammatory, infectious, or structural abnormality that can be seen by commonly used examination, x-ray, or laboratory test. Gastrointestinal motility is defined by the movements of the digestive system, and the transit of the contents within it. When nerves or muscles in any portion of the digestive tract do not function in a strong coordinated fashion, a person develops symptoms related to motility problems. These symptoms may range from heartburn to constipation. Other symptoms may also include abdominal distention, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. ... Glossary a boutGERD.org aboutIBS.org aboutIncontinence.org Hirschsprung's Disease What is Hirschsprung's Disease Children with Hirschsprung's disease are missing the nerve cells ("ganglion cells") within the wall of their colon or rectum. These cells are responsible for the normal wave-like motion of the bowel (peristalsis), and when they are missing the stool stops and an obstruction occurs. The length of affected bowel varies, but the most common transition point is in the upper rectum or the sigmoid colon. Hirschsprung's disease is also called megacolon. It is a congenital disease, which means a person is born with it. The disease may also be hereditary, which means a parent can pass it to a child. Hirschsprung's disease affects mainly infants and children. Symptoms Although symptoms usually begin within a few days after birth, some people don't develop them until childhood or even adulthood. In infants, the primary symptom is not passing meconium, an infant's first bowel movement, within the first 24 to 48 hours of life. Other symptoms include 1) vomiting and abdominal distention as a newborn, 2) chronic constipation, or 3) more rarely diarrhea, fever, and distention (symptoms associated with enterocolitis inflammation of the small intestine and colon). Symptoms in older children include passing small watery stools, diarrhea, and a lack of appetite.

Printable format Relaxation training is a integral component of behavioral therapies for managing chronic pain, promoting health, and helping patients cope with a life-threatening illness, such as breast cancer. Relaxation can also assist in managing functional GI disorders. How Can Relaxation Help?
Research has shown that relaxation provides several health benefits including: decreasing excess arousal produced by worry or anxiety, managing insomnia, buffering the adverse physiological responses to stress, and increasing pain tolerance while decreasing some of the symptoms associated with chronic pain. Relaxation training is also a vital part of any stress management program and a component of many cognitive-behavioral treatment programs for problems such as headache, depression, anxiety, and phobias. Many researchers and health professionals believe that relaxation provides two important functions: (1) as a coping skill that can be used immediately when a person is stressed, overly aroused, or in pain, and (2) by preventing some of the damaging effects of stress. Daily practice of relaxation lowers arousal that is associated with wear and tear on the body. Regular use of relaxation techniques enables one to calm the body before beginning stressful activities and has been associated with improvements in the immune system as well as improved survival of cancer patients. Daily practice of relaxation makes a person generally more relaxed, better prepared to manage daily demands, and better able to buffer the long-term effects of stress, while also providing a tool to use when things get out of hand.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease in the Cat
    Susan Little, DVM
Diplomate ABVP (Feline) G astrointestinal disorders are among the most common problems encountered in feline medicine. Most vomiting and diarrhea episodes occur suddenly and resolve quickly. The causes are usually benign, such as eating an unfamiliar food. However, some patients may have vomiting and/or diarrhea over a period of weeks to months. In the diagnosis of these chronic disorders, the first step is to rule out other causes by using blood tests, stool examinations, x-rays and possibly other tests. Veterinarians will want to ensure that the patient is not suffering from an illness such as chronic kidney failure, pancreatitis, or hyperthyroidism which can also cause vomiting and diarrhea. When all non-gastrointestinal illnesses are eliminated, the various gastrointestinal disorders need to be considered. Among these are Ollulanus tricuspis (stomach worm infection), Helicobacter infection (a bacterial infection of the stomach), inflammatory bowel disease, colitis, and intestinal lymphoma. Of these, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is by far the most common. IBD is actually a group of gastrointestinal disorders, usually chronic in nature, which are characterized by an increase in the number of inflammatory cells found in the lining of the stomach or intestinal tract. These changes can affect the function of the organ involved. The causes of IBD are variable, and often no single cause can be identified in a given patient. The symptoms include chronic vomiting, diarrhea, or both, and in some cases, weight loss and change in appetite. Some patients may defecate outside their litter box, especially if diarrhea is present. The symptoms may be cyclical in nature, with the cat appearing to be normal at times. It is not unusual for these patients to be misdiagnosed as having hairballs.

Research in epidemiology, genetics, immunology, DNA and their impact on gastrointestinal disorders. Identifies IBD patient clinics, and related links.
    http://www.medicine.uq.edu.au/IBD/index.htm
The Brisbane Inflammatory Bowel Diseases Research Centre seeks out key issues related to understanding and treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) by assembling, supporting and managing teams to advance knowledge in epidemiology, genetics, immunology and pharmacokinetics. Our aim is to be recognised both in Australia and internationally for basic and clinical research in gut immunology, colonic microbial ecology, IBD (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, indeterminate colitis) and other immune based gastrointestinal disorders. We run specialised IBD clinics and have active research programs in IBD epidemiology, genetics, immunology, microbiology and pharmacokinetics. Go to other pages on our site if you want more details.
