What Is a Gynecologic Oncologist? Oncology Team ABOUT US Healthcommunities.com Pressroom Testimonials Overview The stomach is an organ of the digestive system. It is located in the abdomen between the esophagus and the small intestine. It begins at the connection to the esophagus, called the gastro-esophageal (GE) junction. It ends at the pyloric valve, which is the opening to the duodenum - the first section of the small intestine. The stomach is shaped like the letter J. Nearby, but not attached to the stomach, are such organs as the liver, left kidney with left adrenal gland, pancreas, colon, and spleen. Owing to their close location, any of these other organs may easily become involved when cancer is present in the stomach. The clinical term for cancer of the stomach is gastric cancer. Stomach Functions The stomach's major functions are related to digestion of food. After swallowing, the food is held in the stomach temporarily. The mucus lining of the stomach secretes acidic gastric juices. These act on the food and begin to break it down chemically. At the same time, the stomach's muscle layers contract and squeeze. This churning helps break down the food physically.

The medical term for cancer of the stomach is gastric cancer. It is now clear that Helicobacter pylori infection also plays a role in some but not all of the cancers of the stomach which can occur. Although it is difficult to give exact figures, it is believed that H.pylori infection may play some role in up to 40 - 60% of all stomach cancers. More information will become available as research continues into the relationship between H. pylori and stomach cancer. Apart from H. pylori infection, other factors which have long been recognised as contributing to the risk of a person developing stomach cancer are:
  • smoking diet that is high in salts diet that is low in fresh fruit and vegetables
When one looks at stomach cancer cells under the microscope, there are different types that can be recognised: (1) adenocarcinoma - intestinal type, (2) adenocarcinoma - diffuse type, (3) gastric Maltoma.

Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Several different types of cancer can occur in the stomach. The most common type is called adenocarcinoma, which refers to the way the cancer looks under the microscope. There are several types of adenocarcinoma. Other types of gastric cancer occur much less frequently so this article is focused on adenocarcinoma of the stomach. Adenocarcinoma of the stomach is a common cancer of the digestive tract worldwide, although it is relatively uncommon in the US. It occurs most frequently in men over 40 years old. The incidence of this form of gastric cancer is extremely high in Japan, Chile, and Iceland. The incidence of most types of gastric adenocarcinoma in the US has declined over the years. Experts propose that the decrease may be related to reduced intake of salted, cured, and smoked foods and increased vitamin C consumption.

Purposes of this summary What is screening? Screening for cancer is examination (or testing) of people for early stages in the development of cancer even though they have no symptoms. Scientists have studied patterns of cancer in the population to learn which people are more likely to get certain types of cancer. They have also studied what things around us and what personal habits may cause cancer. This information sometimes helps doctors recommend who should be screened for certain types of cancer, what types of screening tests people should have, and how often these tests should be done. Not all screening tests are helpful, and most have risks such as tearing (perforation) of the lining of the stomach during gastroscopy. For this reason, scientists at the National Cancer Institute are studying many screening tests to find out how useful they are and to determine the relative benefits and harms.

At that time it was believed that this type of cancer was hereditary. Specific age groups were identified as being afflicted between the 14-30 age group which prompted the undertaking of investigations and many years of research by medical and other professionals, some from as far field as Otago, Wanganui and Palmerston North, each presenting their own theories, finally concluding that this disease is unique to a population of Maori and Scottish descent. In 1994 a project, initiated by the whanau, was established with the aim of reducing the high incidence of gastric cancer within the Maori population and to protect the whanau and their taonga throughout this process.

Anything that makes a person more likely to develop a disorder is a risk factor. The presence of a risk factor does not necessarily mean that an individual will develop cancer, nor does the absence of risk factors mean that an individual will not develop it. There are a variety of risk factors and symptoms associated with gastric cancer. Risk Factors
  • Age : The incidence of gastric cancer increases gradually with increasing age. People in their sixties have the highest occurrence.
  • Gender: Gastric cancer is more common among men than women.
