Definition
A gallstone is a solid crystal deposit that forms in the gallbladder, which is a pear-shaped organ that stores bile salts until they are needed to help digest fatty foods. Gallstones can migrate to other parts of the digestive tract and cause severe pain with life-threatening complications.
Description
Gallstones vary in size and chemical structure. A gallstone may be as tiny as a grain of sand or as large as a golf ball. Eighty percent of gallstones are composed of cholesterol. They are formed when the liver produces more cholesterol than digestive juices can liquefy. The remaining 20% of gallstones are composed of calcium and an orange-yellow waste product called bilirubin. Bilirubin gives urine its characteristic color and sometimes causes jaundice Gallstones are the most common of all gallbladder problems. They are responsible for 90% of gallbladder and bile duct disease, and are the fifth most common reason for hospitalization of adults in the United States. Gallstones usually develop in adults between the ages of 20 and 50; about 20% of patients with gallstones are over 40. The risk of developing gallstones increases with ageat least 20% of people over 60 have a single large stone or as many as several thousand smaller ones. The gender ratio of gallstone patients changes with age. Young women are between two and six times more likely to develop gallstones than men in the same age group. In patients over 50, the condition affects men and women with equal frequency. Native Americans develop gallstones more often than any other segment of the population; Mexican-Americans have the second-highest incidence of this disease.

What are Gallstones? Gallstones are "pebbles" within the gallbladder. The gallbladder is a pear-shaped sac located under the liver. It stores the bile secreted by the liver. During a meal (especially one containing fat or protein), the gallbladder contracts, delivering the bile through the bile ducts into the intestines to help with digestion. Abnormal composition of bile leads to formation of gallstones (see below). Gallstone disease is a common cause of abdominal pain, inflammation, and infection of the gallbladder and the pancreas. There are two types of gallstones; cholesterol and pigment stones. Cholesterol stones are composed of at least sixty percent cholesterol and are common in the United States and Western Europe. Pigment stones are brown or black owing to their high content of colored pigment (bilirubin), and account for over ninety percent of gallstone disease found in the Asia.

Gallstones Overview
Gallstones are lumps of solid material that form in the gallbladder. They usually look like small stones or gravel and can be as small as sand or as large as pebbles, sometimes filling the gallbladder and may take years to grow. The commonest ones are made up of cholesterol, which is a fat. Others are known as pigment stones and consist of calcium and red blood cells, which have broken down and solidified. The gallbladder is a small pear shaped pouch about three to six inches long. It is tucked just under the liver below the right rib cage and is connected to the intestine and liver by small tubes called bile ducts. Bile ducts carry bile, a greenish-brown fluid which is made in the liver. Bile acts like a detergent, breaking up fat from the food we eat into small droplets. It also enables the body to absorb vitamins A, D, E and K. Bile is concentrated and stored in the gallbladder ready for use and is only released when we eat food. Approximately 1 in 10 people will develop gallstones or another gallbladder disease. Anyone can get them, but middle aged, overweight women are particularly likely to. It is not fully understood why some people have them and others don't but gallstones are more common in the following groups of people:

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
The gallbladder is a small pouch near the liver where bile is stored. Bile helps to break down food, especially fats. The gallbladder can become irritated and swollen. A common cause of gallbladder disease is gallstones. Pain from gallstones is also called ""biliary (BILL-ee-air-ee) colic.'' Many people have gallstones but do not know it. Often, gallstones stay in the gallbladder or pass through it without causing problems. However, if one gets stuck on its way out of the gallbladder, intense pain can result.
Causes
You are more likely to have gallstones if your parents had them. Your chances of developing gallstones also increase if you weigh too much, have many children, take birth control pills, drink too much alcohol, and have a high-fat diet. Whenever the gallbladder cannot completely empty, gallstones may develop. For instance, infection and swelling of the tubes that carry bile out of the liver can produce gallstones.

A healthy diet for living with gallstones
Learning to live with gallstones can be done, but some diet alterations are necessary. The goal is to reduce fat consumption as much as possible and do other things to keep from having attacks with your gallstones if you are wanting to avoid surgery. What will need to be done is look at the fat content of everything you eat until you get a feel for what foods can be tolerated and which ones need to be avoided. On packaged foods, you will find a nutrition table with amount of fat grams along with calories and other information. Depending on how you want to approach your new gallbladder diet, eating less than 60 grams of fat a day versus 10 grams of fat will make a difference. bodyOffer(19265) Eating more than 60 grams would definitely not be a good idea. And less than 10 grams would be too little for your body to function properly and stay healthy. Some basic tips when looking to cut fact consumption is to drink a lower fat milk. So if whole milk is what constitutes your dairy foods, drop down to 1 percent or skim. If you are a big milk drinker this move alone will really reduce fat in your diet substantially. Another good idea is to trade some of your red meats for chicken, white turkey meat and fish. Though red meats are coming with lower fat content all the time, the above mentioned meats are much lower in fat and better for you all around.

Gallstones
The gallbladder is a small per-shaped organ located beneath the liver on the right side of the abdomen. The gallbladder s primary functions are to store and concentrate bile, and secrete bile into the small intestine at the proper time to help digest food. The gallbladder is connected to the liver and the small intestine by a series of ducts, or tube-shaped structures, that carry bile. Collectively, the gallbladder and these ducts are called the biliary system. Bile is a yellow-brown fluid produced by the liver. In addition to water, bile contains cholesterol, lipids (fats), bile salts (natural detergents that break up fat), and bilirubin (the bile pigment that gives bile and stools their color). The liver can produce as much as three cups of bile in a day, the gallbladder can store up to a cup of concentrated bile. As food passes from the stomach into the small intestine, the gallbladder contracts and sends its stored bile into the small intestine (duodenum) through the common bile duct and papilla of Vater . Once in the small intestine, bile helps digestive fats in foods. Under normal circumstances, most bile is recirculated in the digestive tract by being absorbed in the intestine and returning to the liver in the bloodstream.

A-Z Illnesses and Conditions
Gallstones By Dr Rob Hicks Gallstones are lumps of solid material that form in the gall bladder. Most are the size of a pea but they can be as large as pebbles. Gallstones can be found in the gall bladder or in the bile duct that connects the gall bladder to the small intestine. Most gallstones are made up of cholesterol and bile pigments. Some gallstones, however, are just made of cholesterol and some are just made up of bile pigment. Often gallstones do not cause symptoms. If a gallstone partially or completely blocks the normal flow of bile then this may cause an attack of biliary colic with upper abdominal pain and nausea and vomiting. These episodes are normally brief and typically follow a fatty meal that causes the gallbladder to contract. Stones that continue to block the drainage of bile can cause inflammation or infection of the gallbladder and bile ducts, jaundice and acute pancreatitis. 1 in 10 people will develop gallstones. Those over the age of 40 years old, the overweight and women are more likely to develop them.

Gallstones To prevent gallstones, eat a high-fiber, low-fat, low-sugar diet. When snacking, choose fruits and vegetables instead of cookies and crackers. People who regularly consume unhealthy foods that are calorie-dense, low in fiber, or high in fat are more prone to gallstones as well as troublesome problems with existing gallstones. Likewise, consume a diet rich in fiber folic acid (folate), omega-3 fatty acids , and vitamins B12 C , and E . These nourishing substances reduce the odds of stone formation by protecting against constipation and correcting nutritional deficiencies linked to gallstones. Maintaining an ideal body weight is also vital for preventing gallstones. Both obesity and a precipitous drop in weight are strongly associated with gallstone production. When dieting, aim for a gradual, one to two pound loss per week to avoid a rapid drop in weight. Finally, drink plenty of fluids, particularly six to eight glasses of water per day, to maintain adequate water content of the bile. Peppermint tea can be useful for the pain of a gallbladder attack, because peppermint helps relax spasms of the smooth muscle lining, the gallbladder, and bile ducts. In addition, robust plant compounds known as terpenes are plentiful in peppermint and are thought to have a gallstone-dissolving effect.

Gallstones and Gallbladder Disease
WHAT ARE GALLSTONES AND GALLBLADDER DISEASE?
Bile and the Gallbladder
The formation of gallstones is a complex procedure that starts with bile , a fluid composed mostly of water, bile salts, lecithin (a fat known as a phopholipid), and cholesterol. (Most gallstones are formed from cholesterol.)
  • Bile is first produced by the liver and then secreted through tiny channels that eventually lead into a larger tube called the common bile duct , which leads to the small intestine.
  • Only a small amount of bile drains directly into the small intestine, however. Most flows into the gallbladder through the cystic duct , which is a side extension off the common duct. (The system of ducts through which bile flows, including the common bile duct is called the biliary tree).
  • The gallbladder is a four-inch sac with a muscular wall that is located under the liver. Here, most of the fluid (about two to five cups a day) is removed, leaving a few tablespoons of concentrated bile.
  • Bile is important for the digestion of fat. The gallbladder serves as a reservoir until bile is needed in the small intestine for this function.

Topic Overview
What are gallstones? Gallstones are hard stones made of cholesterol and other substances that form in the gallbladder , a small sac located just under the liver. They also can develop in the common bile duct , the tube that carries bile from the gallbladder and the liver to the small intestine. Gallstones may be as small as a grain of sand or as large as 6.4 cm (2.5 in.) in diameter. Sometimes stones are found during tests to look for another condition, such as irritable bowel syndrome , inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis), peptic ulcer disease, kidney stones, ovarian cysts , inflammation of the liver (hepatitis), or pregnancy. What causes gallstones? Gallstones develop when cholesterol and other substances in the bile form crystals that become hard stones in the gallbladder. The stones may form because of excess cholesterol in the bile or because the gallbladder doesn't empty properly.
