Compression Fractures
Q:
What exactly are compression fractures? What causes them and how are they treated?
A: Compression fractures occur when the vertebrae in the spine collapse from their normal height of an inch or so to about half that size. Osteoporosis is the most common cause, and a fall is often the precipitating event. Because the bone mass is decreased and weaker, a fracture may occur without any trauma at all. Sudden bending or lifting or even coughing could cause compression. Cancer invading the spine would be another, rarer cause of a compression fracture. Young people can also get compression fractures if they are weight lifters, gymnasts, or doing something very strenuous. The pain usually resolves after several weeks, but the patient will lose height, and there may be noticeable curvature of the spine. There is no treatment to straighten the spine. That's why prevention of osteoporosis is so important. Once a fracture occurs, it's done, and further collapse of other vertebrae is a possibility.

Hard flooring could increase the risk of hip fractures Hip fractures in the elderly could be reduced dramatically if floorings in residential homes are changed, a study suggests.
A team from the University of Warwick and the University of Edinburgh found carpeted wooden floors are the safest surfaces for elderly people. Concrete floors were the most dangerous because of the force of impact a fall on a hard surface has. The study was published in the journal Age and Ageing. The study found sub-flooring, the flooring beneath carpet, was also an important factor. Concrete sub-flooring was found to be more dangerous than wooden sub-flooring. Serious consequences Researchers looked at 6,641 falls and 222 fractures in 34 residential care homes for older people. In 1990 there were an estimated 1.7 million hip fractures worldwide and this figure is expected to rise to 6.3 million by 2050.

... Solutions A to Z Orthopedic injuries: Fractures
Children's bones are softer than those of adults, thus childhood fractures are quite different from those occurring in adults. A child's bones may bend more than 45 degrees without breaking; when fractures do occur, they are often hairline, "green-stick" or simple fractures.
SIGNS OF FRACTURES
It is often difficult to tell whether a child's bone is broken. If you suspect a broken bone, treat it accordingly even if it looks normal. Signs to look for:
HOW TO GIVE FIRST AID FOR FRACTURES
Check the child's breathing and pulse. If they are absent, call for emergency help and start CPR.
Check for signs of shock. Keep the child lying down and as quiet as possible. Cover to keep warm.
If there is bleeding over the suspected fracture, place a clean cloth or hand over the wound and apply gentle pressure to stop the bleeding. Do not move the child unless the child is in danger of further injury where he is lying. If the child must be moved, make a splint to completely immobilize the injured part. Do not allow the child foods or fluids. Fluid or food intake may delay emergency administration of a general anesthetic if surgery is needed.

http://www.genou.com/fractures/les_fractures_du_genou.htm

METATARSAL FRACTURES For more Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Information Check out EMEDx.com Definition A metatarsal fracture is a break of one of the long thin bones of the foot.
5th Metatarsal Fracture
Details Your foot has five metatarsals. Metatarsal fractures range from very minor to severe injuries. It depends on the pattern of injury and the amount of displacement of the fracture. At times, these fractures can occur in an area of the foot with poor blood flow. This makes fracture healing more difficult. A "Jones Fracture" is an example of one such fracture. Often, this particular fracture requires surgery. Causes Most metatarsal fractures are caused by twisting or direct impact (like dropping a heavy object on your foot). Metatarsal fractures can be missed sometimes because the symptoms can be similar to an ankle sprain. Diagnosis A metatarsal fractures is diagnosed by a history of an injury to the foot followed by pain and swelling. X-rays help to confirm the fracture. Rarely, a CT scan or MRI is needed to rule out other injuries. Treatment Immediate Treatment: Elevate and ice foot. Use crutches.

Peer Review Status: Internally Peer Reviewed Table of Contents A fracture is a break in the continuity of bone and/or cartilage. Management of the common fractures in children can be relatively easy, and the results are usually gratifying if a few fundamentals are skillfully applied. In contrast to the complex mechanical forces which break bones in adults, fractures in children result from simple injuries such as minor twists, falls on the outstretched arm and hand, fall from swing sets, etc. The types of breaks are rather characteristic, and prognosis is good and principles of treatment can be learned easily. A few fractures have serious implication, and these require care by an expert in children's fractures. http://www.niapublications.org/engagepages/falls.asp
Order Print Copies Preventing Falls and Fractures A simple fall can mean a major change in someone’s life. When an older person falls, she or he might be so hurt that they are no longer able to lead an active, independent life. Each year thousands of older men and women are disabled, sometimes permanently, by falls that result in broken bones. Yet, small changes in homes and lifestyles might prevent such falls. With age may come changes in vision, hearing, muscle strength, coordination, and reflexes. These changes may make people more likely to fall. Older people also are more likely to have disorders that may affect their balance such as diabetes and conditions of the heart, blood vessels, nervous system, and thyroid. Sometimes these are treatable. In addition, older persons often take medications that may cause dizziness or light-headedness. Osteoporosis is a condition in which bone mass is lost so that bones are more fragile and break easily. This is a major cause of bone fractures in women after menopause and in older people in general. For someone with severe osteoporosis, even a minor fall may cause one or more bones to break. Preventing falls is very important for these people. Steps to Take Falls and accidents seldom “just happen.” Many can be prevented. Each of us can take steps to make our homes safer and lower the chances of falling. Here are some ideas to help prevent falls and fractures.
