Parents…Watch Your Children’s Feet!
Parents: Take a few minutes to watch your child performing everyday activities such as walking, running and playing sports. An irregular gait, frequent stumbling or limping can signal a problem. “Tired” legs, night pains and cramping are also signs to watch for, as is uneven wear on the soles of the shoes. Any of these changes should be discussed with a podiatric foot and ankle surgeon who can provide expert diagnosis and treatment options to assure that your child is able to fully participate in and enjoy all of the activities the new school year offers. And check that “favorite” pair of shoes to make sure your child has not outgrown them! Tight shoes can cause many problems including ingrown nails, calluses and blisters.
Which of the following can be a cause of ingrown toenails in children?

Diabetes
D iabetes is probably the most damaging disease that a patient can encounter with regards to their feet. Diabetes comes in two basic types; type 1 and type 2. Type 1 is usually associated with juvenile diabetes and is usually a hereditary type of disease. Type 2, commonly referred to as adult onset diabetes, is usually characterized by elevated blood sugars by people who are overweight and have not attended to their diet as they should.
Diabetes can be controlled with medications, diet and exercise. But a serious condition occurs if the sugars are out of control and a lesion (sore or ulcer) develops on the plantar (bottom) of the foot. The goal and treatment of diabetics with foot ulcers is to relieve the pressure, prevent infection and ultimately ensure the patient does not lose their limb. It is important that a patient with a foot ulcer consult their

Risk factors linked to painful foot condition revealed Reported by Susan Aldridge, PhD, medical journalist Being overweight and standing for long periods are risk factors for planar fasciitis, a painful foot condition.
If you get an excruciating pain in the heel when you get out of bed in the morning, then you may have planar fasciitis. It's a condition where the ligament in the sole of the foot is inflamed. Researchers at Virginia Commonwealth University have looked at the risk factors underlying planar fasciitis, by comparing a group of 50 people with the condition and 100 without. They found that being overweight and staying on your feet for several hours a day both increased the risk of planar fasciitis. But the main risk factor was a problem in the movement flexing the ankle and bringing the foot and toes in the direction of the nose. However, a specific exercise can be done to increase this aspect of ankle flexibility. Standing an arm's length from a wall, and placing one foot behind the other, you lean your body towards the wall, bracing with the arm and holding for ten seconds.
