Foot care for dancers
Article from www.foot.com
Dancers place tremendous stress on their feet through hours and hours of training and performance, making them especially prone to injury.
Therefore, for anyone taking part in dance classes or performance, proper foot care is imperative.
According to Dr. Suzanne Belyea, Medical Director for Foot.com, The Foot Health Network,a web site that provides comprehensive information on foot health, dancers especially have to watch out for such foot conditions as metatarsalgia, plantar fasciitis, and achilles tendonitis.
Metatarsalgia is a general term used to denote a painful foot condition in the metatarsal region of the foot (the area just before the toes, more commonly referred to as the ball-of-the-foot). This common foot disorder affects the bones and joints at the ball-of-the-foot. The first step in treating metatarsalgia is to determine what is causing the pain. If improper fitting dance shoes or other footwear is the cause, the footwear must be changed.
Your ultimate goal should be to unload pressure on the ball-of-foot to allow your condition to heal. When not dancing, you should wear shoes with a high, wide toe box that allows your foot to spread out. Plantar Fasciitis is an inflammation caused by excessive stretching of the plantar fascia. The plantar fascia is a broad band of fibrous tissue that runs along the bottom surface of the foot, attaching at the bottom of the heel bone and extending to the forefoot. Excessive stretching of the plantar fascia causes Plantar Fasciitis, which can also lead to heel pain, arch pain, and heel spurs.

    Introduction:
    Why important?
Foot Problems Checklist Why is foot care important to people with diabetes? Diabetes can cause nerve damage (called peripheral neuropathy) that reduces sensation in your feet. If you have neuropathy, you can have an injury or condition on your foot that requires medical care without even knowing it. Small injuries may become infected. Diabetes may also affect blood flow in your legs and feet, making it harder for cuts or sores to heal. Then a small infection can become very serious. Foot infection is the most common reason for hospitalization of people with diabetes. And foot ulcers and non-healing wounds are the primary causes of amputation in people with diabetes. With proper foot care, however, it is estimated that as many as half of these amputations could be prevented. What kind of foot problems do people with diabetes have?

    Arthritic Foot Conditions
There are approximately 38 causes of arthritis and most of these conditions affect the human foot. The most common of these conditions is osteoarthritis. This is the simple wearing and tearing away of the cartilage of the joints. Age, excessive weight, ill-fitting shoes and trauma (injury) are the basic causes of osteoarthritis. Fortunately, this condition is very treatable.
Surgery to reconstruct the joint may be needed if arthritis causes chronic problems that cannot be controlled by medication, orthotics or physical therapy. Custom shoes and orthotics may alleviate much of the discomfort associated with these diseases.

Nearly 85% of ankle sprains occur laterally, or on the outside of ankle joints. Sprains on the inside ligaments are less common. An ankle sprain occurs when the ankle rolls causing the ligaments to be stretched or torn. Many sprains occur when participating in sports, or by twisting the ankle when walking on an uneven surface. Some individuals, due to their bone structure or foot type, are more prone to ankle sprains. Although ankle sprains often heal without need for surgery, it is important to consider the problem as a partial dislocation of the ankle joint and treat it accordingly. Learn More

Dr. Suzanne Belyea, medical director of Foot.com, says that changes in body shape and weight triggered by pregnancy can affect the lower extremities in numerous ways. Tired, sore and swollen feet are common because natural weight gain experienced during pregnancy alters a woman1s center of gravity, changing her weight-bearing stance and adding pressure to the knees and feet. "Over-pronation, or a weakening of the arches commonly known as flat feet, is one of the most common foot conditions brought on by pregnancy," Dr. Belyea says. Over-pronation can make walking painful and increase strain on the calves and/or back.

By GAIL ZIMMERMAN, Contributing Writer Not all foot conditions cause pain, but athlete’s foot, nail fungus, foot odor and warts can be embarrassing as well as uncomfortable, especially during the summer months when feet are on display at the beach, the pool and outdoor barbeques. Athlete’s foot is a skin condition caused by a fungus that usually occurs between the toes. Dry, itchy, scaly skin, inflammation and blisters characterize the condition. When the blisters break and crack open, raw, red areas are exposed, and pain and swelling occur. The infection can spread to the soles of the feet, to the toenails, and to other parts of the body. Itching and burning increases as the infection spreads. Bed sheets and clothing can also spread the disease. Warm, damp areas around showers, swimming pools, steam rooms, Jacuzzi tubs and locker rooms are breeding grounds for fungi, according to the American Podiatric Medical Association. Proper foot hygiene, including daily washing of the feet and changing shoes regularly to decrease moisture help prevent athlete’s foot. The American Podiatric Medical Association recommends wearing shower shoes and avoiding walking barefoot in public places. Decreasing perspiration by changing damp socks and using talcum powder in shoes also helps. Topical or oral medications designed for people with athlete’s foot are the preferred treatment for this fungal disease.
