Click on stars for an explanation You may purchase this book in the VIN store It may at first seem to some that elephant foot care is either a mundane or narrow topic for an entire book.
However, foot problems are seen in approximately half of all captive elephants at some point in their lives. Despite months to years of long-term treatment, chronic foot problems in elephants can lead to permanent disability, death, or euthanasia. This book is the result of The First North American Conference On Elephant Foot Care And Pathology, hosted by the Oregon Zoo in 1998. Contributors are from zoos, circuses, elephant sanctuaries, universities, and colleges of veterinary medicine. There are 27 chapters divided into six sections: the context of elephant foot care, approaches to routine foot care, common elephant foot conditions and their treatment, surgical intervention for elephant foot disease, antibiotic and anti-inflammatory dosages for elephants, and conclusions and recommendations. The take home message presented in this book is that foot problems in elephants are preventable, and prevention is highly preferable to treatment. Lack of exercise, long hours standing on hard substrates, and wound contamination from standing in their own excreta are major contributing factors to many elephant foot problems.

Information From The American Podiatric Medical Association
A biological masterpiece,
but subject to many ills
The foot can be compared to a finely tuned race car, or a space shuttle, vehicles whose function dictates their design and structure. And like them, the human foot is complex, containing within its relatively small size 26 bones (the two feet contain a quarter of all the bones in the body), 33 joints, and a network of more than 100 tendons, muscles, and ligaments, to say nothing of blood vessels and nerves.
Tons of Pressure
The components of your feet work together, sharing the tremendous pressures of daily living. An average day of walking, for example, brings a force equal to several hundred tons to bear on the feet. This helps explain why your feet are more subject to injury than any other part of your body.
Foot ailments are among the most common of our health problems. Although some can be traced to heredity, many stem from the cumulative impact of a lifetime of abuse and neglect. Studies show that 75 percent of Americans experience foot problems of a greater or lesser degree of seriousness at some time in their lives; nowhere near that many seek medical treatment, apparently because they mistakenly believe that discomfort and pain are normal and expectable.

Diabetic Foot Problems and Treatments What Are Diabetic Foot Problems? Foot problems are a leading cause of hospitalization for the eight million persons in the United States who have been identified as having diabetes mellitus. Expenditures related to diabetic foot problems total hundreds of millions of dollars annually. It is estimated that 15% of all diabetics will develop a serious foot condition at some time in their lives. Common problems include infection, ulceration, or gangrene that may lead, in severe cases, to amputation of a toe, foot or leg. Most of these problems are preventable through proper care and regular visits to your podiatric surgeon. This physician can provide information on foot inspection and care, proper footwear, and early recognition and treatment of foot conditions. Causes Foot problems in persons with diabetes are usually the result of three primary factors: neuropathy, poor circulation, and decreased resistance to infection. Also, foot deformities and trauma play major roles in causing ulcerations and infections in the presence of neuropathy or poor circulation.
  • Neuropathy (Nerve Damage)
Your ability to detect sensations or vibration may be diminished. Neuropathy allows injuries to remain unnoticed and untreated for lengthy periods of time. It may cause burning or sharp pains in feet and interfere with your sleep. Ironically, painful neuropathy may occur in combination with a loss of sensation. Neuropathy can also affect the nerves that supply the muscles in your feet and legs. This ‘motor neuropathy’ can cause muscle weakness or loss of tone in the thighs, legs, and feet, and the development of hammertoes, bunions, and other foot deformities.

Foot care is important for people with arthritis, yet when cash is tight podiatry is sometimes regarded as an unaffordable luxury. Podiatrist and academic Jim Woodburn, of Leeds University, explains the difference podiatry can make.
What do podiatrists do?
The podiatrist is responsible for the assessment and treatment of the many painful and disabling foot conditions associated with arthritis. In all NHS clinics, podiatrists are state-registered,which means that they have undergone a recognised three-year training programme in one of the university-based training schools. Since this is a specialised area of clinical practice, most clinicians will also have undergone additional training with emphasis on the rheumatic diseases. In outpatient clinics we see a varied caseload ranging from patients with newly diagnosed rheumatoid arthritis who have painful stiff joints to those with peripheral circulatory problems and foot ulceration associated with connective tissue disease. Recently, we have developed a special interest in the foot problems associated with rheumatoid arthritis because this condition is associated with persistent and disabling foot pain and deformity, and we have started to find out more about these problems by interviewing sufferers.
