Types of Foot Conditions- Neuropathy Definition Cause

It is very important for diabetics to take the necessary precautions to prevent all foot related injuries. Due to the consequences of neuropathy, daily observation of the feet is critical. When a diabetic patient takes the necessary preventative footcare measures, it reduces the risk of developing serious foot conditions. Treatment and Prevention
The most successful way to prevent diabetic neuropathy from occurring is to control the diabetes. It is important to maintain blood sugars at normal levels and maintain normal blood pressure. In addition to this, it is important to:
  • Stop Smoking
  • Limit the amount of alcohol you drink
  • Have regular physical exams
  • Have regular blood and urine tests
  • Exercise regularly, according to your doctor’s recommendation.

    Foot Conditions
Your feet are an amazing combination of bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons and other soft tissue. They bear the pressure of all the weight of your body. This stress, combined with a number of other factors like heredity, aging and even poor fitting shoes, can cause the development of painful foot problems. To determine the exact nature of your problem, an orthopaedic foot specialist will conduct a thorough examination of your foot. Once the evaluation is complete, your doctor will discuss surgical or non-surgical options that may be appropriate for a number of conditions: Calluses
Callusees, which typically develop on the ball or heel of the foot, are composed of hardened patches of dead skin cells. The skin on the sole of the foot is ordinarily about forty times thicker than skin anywhere else on the body, but a callus can double this normal thickness. A protective callus layer naturally develops to guard against excessive pressure and chafing. Calluses can develop from wearing poorly fitting shoes and walking on hard surfaces. Treatment involves relieving the pressure on the skin, usually by modifying the shoe. Pads to relieve the bony pressure are also helpful, but they must be positioned carefully. After soaking your feet to soften the calluses or after a bath or shower when the skin is softer, a pumice stone or callus file can be used to remove some of the dead skin and reduce some of the pain and pressure from a thick callus. If conservative measures fail to provide relief, surgery may be necessary to relieve the pressure that causes the callus.

    Diabetic Foot Problems
Foot problems are a leading cause of hospitalization for the eight million persons in the United States with diabetes. In fact, it is estimated that 15 percent of all diabetics will develop a serious foot condition at some time in their lives. Common problems include:
    • Diabetic Neuropathy (Nerve Damage): Diabetic neuropathy is a condition that most commonly affects the nerves of the hands and feet, causing a loss of sensation. As a result, foot conditions such as corns or calluses which would normally be painful do not cause pain and over time break down the skin and cause ulceration. Quite often, an infection will also occur which can result in bone or deep tissue infection. If the person also has poor circulation, gangrene can develop.
    • Poor Circulation: Persons with diabetes often have circulation disorders (peripheral vascular disease)that can result in reduced blood flow to the feet, which restricts delivery of oxygen and nutrients that are required for normal maintenance and repair. Therefore, healing of foot injuries, infection or ulceration is affected.
    • Infection: Due to deficiencies in the ability of white blood cells to defend against invading bacteria, diabetics have more difficulty fighting off infections.

Sports Tuina and the Treatment for Foot Conditions Associated with Hyperpronation
by Don Oyao, BA, MA, DC, ND Sports tuina is an ancient healing art and a hands-on technique implementing combinations of acupressure, acupoint identification, soft tissue massage and bonesetting techniques. In this literature review, modern Westernized diagnosis and its nomenclature is synthesized with Eastern oriental views of energy systems and treatment management. Sports tuina prevents and treats disease by applying manual methods to remove obstructions in the meridian pathways (traditional Chinese healing philosophy) by promoting an increase of vital energy or life force (ch'i) and blood circulation; reducing slight displacement of joints and healing soft tissue injuries; adjusting the functions of the internal organs and nerve regulation; joint mobility; and cellular tissue flushing. The philosophy of tuina stems from direct experience. People who practice this art in depth are said to be in touch with the inner mechanisms of their bodies. Their beliefs are derived from subjective experiences, from an inner assurance of truth. The Chinese philosophy of Tao is grounded on awareness, rather than strictly based on logical theories and rational premises.

... Health Tools Diabetic Foot Conditions By: Thomas J. Elardo, D.P.M. There's a common saying about how you don't know someone's struggles until you've walked a mile in their shoes. For some diabetics, just maintaining their feet well enough to keep walking in their own shoes is a daily and sometimes challenging task. There are over eight million people in the United States that have been diagnosed with diabetes. Of these eight million, approximately 15 percent will develop a serious foot condition at some time in their lives. Foot problems in diabetics arise primarily from three factors: neuropathy, poor circulation and decreased resistance to infection. Neuropathy is a fancy word for nerve damage, which causes the ability to feel sensations in the feet or legs to decrease. As a result, other conditions such as muscle weakness and the development of foot deformities may occur. Poor circulation, also known as peripheral vascular disease, occurs from a reduced blood flow to the feet and causes cramping in the calf or buttocks when walking. In more severe cases there may be increased cramping or color and temperature changes in the skin. For example, the feet may turn red and feel cold to the touch. Because blood flow is poor, nutrients needed to carry out normal maintenance and repair are diminished. This can cause slow healing of foot injuries and infections, a reduction in hair growth, a thickening of the nails and a thinning of the skin.

Commonly Treated Conditions The most common conditions treated by a pedorthist include:
    • Plantar Fasciitis (pain in heel or arch) - Patients suffer from exquisite pain at the heel or along the arch of the foot, especially first thing in the morning. Plantar fasciitis is a common (and often chronic) overuse condition. It requires a controlling orthosis to maintain foot position and reduce tension on the injured tissue. Metatarsalgia (pain in the joint of the ball of the foot)- Patients with metatarsalgia describe a persisting pain in the ball of the foot that feels like "walking with a pebble in your shoe". It can also be accompanied by burning, tingling or numbness into the forefoot and toes. Pedorthist commonly treat metatarsalgia with two devices: an orthosis contoured to unload painful areas, and a rocker sole to reduce painful toe extention. Diabetes - Diabetics have decrease blood circulation and loss of sensation in their feet, which makes them high-risk patients. Diabetics are particularly susceptible to skin breakdown and ulceration, so it is critical that they have optimal-fitting footwear and accommodative orthoses. Arthritis - Activities such as standing and walking aggravate the continual pain and degeneration of the joint caused by arthritis. Patients benefit tremendously from additional-depth footwear and footwear modification that align, cushion, and stabilize feet.
