Pregnancy and Food Poisoning Compiled by Karin A. Bilich Food poisoning can be particularly harmful when contracted during pregnancy. Pregnant women may have relatively mild symptoms (fever and aches) and make a quick recovery, or they may transfer the infection to their unborn child, who may then be stillborn or born very ill. In order to protect the fetus, pregnant women should take special care to avoid foods that may be contaminated. Food poisoning often starts as a flulike illness with fever and chills, and may be accompanied by nausea or diarrhea, abdominal cramps, or dehydration. Severe cases can include an unusually painful headache and stiff neck. Contact your doctor if you develop any of these symptoms. If a pregnant woman is diagnosed and treated promptly with antibiotics, miscarriage and stillbirth can often be prevented. Follow these guidelines to prevent food poisoning:
    • Don't buy any food past its "sell by" date or with damaged packaging.

A couple of hours after eating a delicious dinner from the local takeout place, you and your brother crash on the couch to watch some TV. But just as you're settling in to watch your favorite show, you both start to feel sick. Powerful waves of pain are rumbling through your stomachs. Then it goes away. Whew! But not for long. The belly pain returns, and now you feel even worse. And you can't get over that sudden feeling that you're about to puke These are typical symptoms of food poisoning, which can be mild and last just a short time or can be serious. Read more about food poisoning so you can learn how to avoid it.
    What Is Food Poisoning?
Food poisoning comes from eating foods that contain germs like bad bacteria or toxins, which are poisonous substances. If food isn't cooked thoroughly or handled properly at a store or restaurant, you can get food poisoning. Mild cases of food poisoning are very common because many of the bacteria that cause food poisoning are on the things we touch and often on the foods we eat. They're all around us! Believe it or not, all food has some bacteria in it (and sometimes, certain bacteria are even good for you). Germs that can cause food poisoning are most often found in foods that come from animals, like meat, poultry (meat that comes from birds, like chicken), eggs, milk, and shellfish. Some of the common germs that can cause food poisoning are bacteria like

    Food Poisoning
What is food poisoning? Food poisoning is defined as any disease of an infectious or toxic nature caused by the consumption of food or drink. The term is most often used to describe the illness, usually diarrhoea and/or vomiting caused by bacteria, viruses or parasites. Very occasionally poisonings from chemicals may be the cause. How common is food poisoning? In the United Kingdom about 2 million people a year suffer from an attack of diarrhoea and/or vomiting due to food poisoning. Most do not consult their doctor and the cause is not often found. Food borne microbes are isolated in only about 100,000 cases a year and although large outbreaks can occur, usually only one or two people are affected. Which bacteria cause food poisoning? The bacteria most commonly found (about 40,000 cases annually) are called Campylobacter . These may be present in unpasteurised milk or raw poultry. Birds pecking the tops of milk bottles may infect the milk on the doorstep but in most cases the contaminated food is not identified. Salmonella is the next most commonly found group of bacteria (about 30,000 per annum). They may be present in raw meat, poultry and occasionally eggs. For the remainder

'Several dead' in China food poisoning outbreak
Exact figures on the casualties have not been made available NANJING, China An outbreak of food poisoning in the eastern Chinese city of Nanjing has sickened at least 200 people and left several dead, state media has reported. The cause of the outbreak is believed to be a local restaurant serving fried dough sticks, sesame cakes and glutinous rice traditional breakfast items. Most of those affected are middle school students and migrant workers who frequented the restaurant in question, media reports said. All fell sick on or shortly after Saturday morning. According to the English language website of the People's Daily newspaper "many people" have died, but no actual number has been specified. Central authorities in Beijing have ordered "all efforts be made to save the victims" the state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

Meat is responsible for the majority of cases of food poisoning, particularly chicken and minced meat as used in burgers.
Knutsford, UK. In or around 1993 wing Commander Derek Simmonds died of food poisoning after eating at the local McDonald's.
Kendall, UK. In or around 1993. A case of food poisoning of a McDonald's customer led to legal action for compensation.
In January 1991 a number of people suffered food poisoning after eating burgers from McDonald's in Friargate, Preston. Some had severe medical problems requiring hospitalisation. McDonald's refused to admit responsibility despite a public Health Laboratory official report into the incident identifying the company, which concluded that `the problem may have not been completely restricted to that single branch, or to a single hamburger chain' . Survivors of the outbreak only received some compensation (without admission of liability) after strenuous and lengthy effort.

The Symptoms
Symptoms begin 6 to 24 hours, (but usually 8 to 12 hours) after eating and consist of the sudden onset of acute abdominal pain followed by diarrhoea. Nausea is common, but fever and vomiting are usually absent. The diagnosis is confirmed by a laboratory test on a faecal specimen, with an outbreak being confirmed by tests on suspect foods. Like people with a flu that's settled in the gastrointestinal tract, those with foodborne illness usually suffer from vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain. (PhotoDisc) Food Poisoning or Flu?
    By Christine Haran
A recent government report shows rates of certain foodborne illnesses, such as infection from E. coli bacteria, are dropping due to better food industry policies. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't use caution when it comes to food preparation and storage, especially as the weather gets warmer and people start dining in their backyard or packing picnics. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 76 million people contract foodborne diseases every year, affecting more people than the common cold. But many of the symptoms of food poisoning mimic those of the garden-variety flu, sometimes leaving people to wonder if their symptoms were caused by something they ate or by a virus they picked up another way.

Definition Food poisoning is the result of eating organisms or toxins in contaminated food. Most cases of food poisoning are a result of common bacteria like Staphylococcus or E. coli
    Food Poisoning
Antibodies Food poisoning can affect one person or it can occur as an outbreak in a group of people who all ate the same contaminated food. Even though food poisoning is relatively rare in the United States, it affects between 60 and 80 million people worldwide each year and results in approximately 6 to 8 million deaths. Food poisoning tends to occur at picnics, school cafeterias, and large social functions. These are situations where food may be left unrefrigerated too long or food preparation techniques are not clean. Food poisoning often occurs from undercooked meats or dairy products (like mayonnaise mixed in cole slaw or potato salad) that have sat out too long.

    food poisoning
This usually refers to the often violent vomiting and diarrhea that can occur when a bacterial germ, often Staphylococcus , secrets a toxin while growing in your food. You ingest the toxin , which irritates your gastrointestinal tract, and you develop a violent gastroenteritis , typically lasting a few hours to a day or so, until the toxin is cleared from your system. Treatment is generally supportive, which is to say you mainly just wait it out. The body knows just what to do - get that toxin out of the system - which it does by violently purging everything from both ends of the GI tract. Other forms of food poisoning involve infection of the bowel with gastroenteritis-producing bacteria or the ingestion of toxins with other effects, chiefly on the nervous system. Now for the more encyclopedic treatment. Three questions go a long way toward confirming a suspicion of common food poisoning:
    • When did the illness start?
    • What did the child eat?
