FDA advisers to vote on flu-treatment inhaler
The experimental flu drug zanamivir is taken twice a day through an inhaler February 24, 1999

Web posted at: 9:29 a.m. EST (1429 GMT)
ATLANTA (CNN) A U.S. Food and Drug Administration advisory committee planned to vote Wednesday on an experimental flu drug that may, on average, cut a day or more off a bout with influenza. The advisers will make a recommendation to the FDA, which usually agrees with its decision. The new drug, zanamivir, is administered by inhaler twice a day. It works by blocking a protein the flu virus needs to replicate in the body. "I felt great, I really did," said Elizabeth Zolowicz , who took part in a drug trial. "I took it about midnight the first time. By morning, fever was gone and I was so much better." Studies in Europe, Australia and the United States showed flu patients who took zanamivir felt better two days earlier than patients who took a placebo.

Dr. Sanjay Gupta: Keep the flu away
CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta Story Tools
(CNN) It is getting to be that time of year again the flu season is nearly upon us. For many, the flu can be very serious for others, it's deadly. Dr. Sanjay Gupta reminded us about the upcoming season and the need to be prepared in Monday's "House Call." He spoke with CNN anchor Bill Hemmer. GUPTA : The beginning of October, tomorrow, flu season sort of officially starts, and it peaks between January and March. So, this is the time of year to be talking about flu shots. We talk a lot about West Nile, we have talked a lot about anthrax over the year. The flu kills about 20,000 people a year. I can just put some of those numbers in perspective for you. Typically, the flu shot, given mostly before November 1, will protect you against some of the most common strains of the flu virus in any given season. There are many different strains of the flu. It constantly mutates, it changes itself. It's a very tricky virus. So, there are three strains that are going to be the most popular this year. They are called the Moscow, the New Caledonia, and the Hong Kong strains.

California counties run out of flu vaccine
SAN FRANCISCO, California (CNN) At least four California counties have exhausted their supplies of flu vaccine, forcing them to cancel flu clinics. Long lines of senior citizens formed outside the clinics in counties that still had vaccine available. "Right now in San Francisco, it's easier to buy heroin off the street than to get a flu shot your doctor," said Dr. William Andereck, a member of the Council on Ethical Affairs for the California Medical Association.
