ATLANTA, Georgia (AP) Flu outbreaks are already going strong in parts of the country, months before the season typically peaks, and this year's vaccine does not exactly match the strain doctors are seeing so far, the government warned Monday. "This is very serious," said Dr. Julie Gerberding, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. She warned that this flu season could be worse than usual. Gerberding begged people to get early flu shots to avoid a potentially staggering flu season nationwide. The shot is recommended for adults over 50, children between 6 months and 2 years, people with chronic medical conditions and people who work in health care. The vaccine is readily available this year, Gerberding said. In an average year, the disease infects up to 20 percent of the U.S. population, killing about 36,000 Americans and hospitalizing 114,000.

BRUSSELS, Belgium (CNN) The European Union is banning imports of U.S. poultry for one month after bird flu was discovered in the state of Texas. The EU said the ban, which is being adopted Tuesday, would apply to all live bird and egg imports from the United States and follows a similar ban on imports of Thai poultry. U.S. health officials said they were monitoring farmworkers in Texas after the chickens were diagnosed with a highly infectious and fatal form of the avian disease. However, the strain is said to pose little risk to humans in contrast to the disease blamed for the deaths of at least 22 people in Asia and prompted the slaughter of tens of millions of fowl. "We want to make sure there's no risk posed by the imports," EU Health and Consumer Protection Commissioner David Byrne told a news conference, adding that the ban would remain in place until March 23.

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) With Americans rushing to get flu shots amid a severe and early flu season, the two makers of the influenza vaccine said Friday that they have completed their shipments for the year. Health officials said plenty of doses are still available at hospitals, HMOs and other health care facilities, though in some areas people may have to make an extra effort to find the vaccine. Health officials said flu has set in early this year, especially in Colorado, where eight children with the disease have died. Some regions have reported vaccine shortages, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said it would work with the manufacturers, state health departments and others to assess the vaccine supply. "CDC is doing everything possible to assess the availability of flu vaccine to identify any locations that have supplies that may be able to be made available to locations that need vaccine," CDC director Julie Gerberding said in a written statement.

CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) Flu vaccines could help day-care children and their school-aged siblings stay well and reduce the use of over-prescribed antibiotics, a new study suggests. But while the vaccine could also help keep adults under age 65 healthy and reduce missed work days, a cost-analysis conducted in another study found no savings in giving the flu shots to those adults.

(CNN) Influenza activity appears to be on the downturn in the United States, even as federal officials report more than 90 children have died of the flu this season. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that 38 states still had widespread activity, down from 42 reported previously. "We are cautiously optimistic that at least in some parts of the country, influenza may have peaked," CDC chief Dr. Julie Gerberding said Thursday. "But there's still plenty of flu out there, and we're still encouraging people with flu-like illness who meet the criteria for concerns or complications to be sure and seek medical attention if they do develop the illness." So far, 93 children under the age of 18 have died of the flu this season, with about 60 percent of them younger than 5. Whether this number is comparable to past outbreaks or is unique to this season is hard to tell, Gerberding said. The agency normally doesn't track children's flu deaths so no firm figures for the past exist.

Hong Kong chicken flu sparks mass spring clean
By CNN's Hope Ngo HONG KONG, China (CNN) The Hong Kong government has launched a massive market clean up to avert an outbreak of 'chicken flu'. The government stepped up its campaign after local media reported that more birds were found dead at a fourth live fowl stall. Secretary for the Environment and Food Lily Yam denied criticism that the government had again reacted too slowly to contain the virus. "We have to act on the basis of confirmatory evidence, and in a situation like this, there are always people who would come out and (say) the action is too slow," Yam told reporters late Thursday. "If we have acted earlier, equally people would come out and say we are in panic," she said. The illness was rediscovered in Hong Kong on Wednesday, when nearly 800 chickens were killed by a strain of the H5N1 virus which officials say is not harmful to humans. More than six thousand birds have been destroyed at public markets where the sick chickens were found in an attempt to contain the virus.

Flu vaccine likely tight in U.S. this year, too
ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) Flu vaccine shipments are likely to be delayed again this year, federal health officials said Thursday during a meeting of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. This year, some 83.7 million people are expected to seek flu vaccines. By the end of October, 53.5 million doses 64 percent of the amount needed are expected to be available. Though that is more than twice the 26.6 million doses available at the same time last year, it is less than the 75.8 million doses available by the end of October 1999, when there was no delay. This November and December, another 30.2 million doses 36 percent of the projected 83.7 million needed are likely to be available, though officials said those numbers could change. ALSO Get more information about this year's flu vaccine from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Flu vaccination typically peaks by early November, but the disease peaks between December and March. In 15 of the past 19 years, the disease peaked between January and March, indicating vaccination in November, December and even later is usually effective, the advisory committee said.

Physicians call for change in flu vaccine recommendations
October 18, 1999 Web posted at: 4:37 PM EDT (2037 GMT) In this story: Serious condition Caregivers not exempt RELATEDS By John A. Cutter (WebMD) As another flu season approaches, a leading physicians' organization is recommending everyone 50 years and older receive a vaccination against influenza. That represents a much lower age than the previous recommendation, which called for people 65 years and older to get flu shots, as well as people of all ages with special health conditions. Officials at the American Academy of Family Physicians called for the change during a September meeting in Orlando, Florida, because the rate of flu-related deaths rises once people pass age 50. "We're not talking about a small public health problem; we're talking about a major problem," said Dr. Richard Zimmerman of the University of Pittsburgh and a member of the academy's Commission on Clinical Policies and Research.
