BANGKOK, Thailand The World Health Organization is trying to calm fears that the reported infection of cats with bird flu could signal an increased risk to humans. At least three domestic cats are thought to have died from the disease in Thailand, while a tiger at a zoo is also reported infected. Bird flu has devastated several Asian nations' poultry industries and has killed at least 21 people across the region. The finding by Thai veterinary officials has alarmed authorities still battling to contain the deadly disease and pet owners have been told not to have direct contact with cats that live near chickens.

Flu
Influenza, or flu, is a respiratory infection caused by a variety of flu viruses. The most familiar aspect of the flu is the way it can “knock you off your feet” as it sweeps through entire communities. The flu differs in several ways from the common cold, a respiratory infection also caused by viruses. For example, people with colds rarely get fevers or headaches or suffer from the extreme exhaustion that flu viruses cause. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 10 to 20 percent of Americans come down with the flu during each flu season, which typically lasts from November to March. Children are two to three times more likely than adults to get sick with the flu, and children frequently spread the virus to others. Although most people recover from the illness, CDC estimates that in the United States more than 100,000 people are hospitalized and about 36,000 people die from the flu and its complications every year.

MANILA, Philippines (Reuters) Health officials said there was no evidence an outbreak of bird flu in Vietnam was behind the deaths of 12 people who fell ill with influenza. "We're investigating any possible link. We have no evidence of the link at the moment," Peter Cordingley, a spokesman for the World Health Organization (WHO) Western Pacific headquarters in Manila, told Reuters. "Of the people who have fallen sick, there is no evidence of human-to-human transmission." He said the results of tests sent to a laboratory in Hong Kong should be available later on Tuesday but that they would first be sent to officials in Vietnam. The bird flu wiped out nearly one million chickens in Vietnam, officials and the World Health Organization said on Tuesday.

Influenza is a very common disease so common, in fact, that whenever we have the (classic) symptoms of fever, chills, headache, aches and pains, and "malaise" (the technical term for "feeling lousy") we tell ourselves and others that we have "the flu". This may be true, and usually is true during the flu season (1-3 months during the winter), but you should bear in mind that there are many other viruses that can produce similar symptoms and a few bacteria as well. After the initial "flu-like" symptoms, cough, congestion, and sore throat become worse in most cases; you may also have viral "pink eye" and/or abdominal symptoms (stomach ache, nausea, and vomiting). Muscle aches and pains can be bad enough to make walking difficult. Usually the symptoms subside within a week or so. In small children, influenza can also cause

WASHINGTON An entire flock of chickens on a farm in the United States has been destroyed after being diagnosed with a serious strain of bird flu. Weekend tests showed the Texas flock had the H5N2 strain of the virus, classified by the U.S. Agriculture Department as "highly pathogenic" to poultry. It is the first outbreak in the U.S. of a severe form of the disease in 20 years, when more than 17 million birds were killed at a cost of nearly $65 million, Reuters reported. Officials are not ruling out a human risk, but the U.S. Center for Disease Control says although the strain is fatal in animals, it does not pose a dangerous threat.

Ninth Day Intro Isaac Starr, 3rd year medical student, University of Pennsylvania, 1918. By the fall of 1918 a strain of influenza seemingly no different from that of previous years suddenly turned so deadly, and engendered such a state of panic and chaos in communities across the globe, that many people believed the world was coming to an end. It struck with amazing speed, often killing its victims within just hours of the first signs of infection. So fast did the 1918 strain overwhelm the body's natural defenses, that the usual cause of death in influenza patients-a secondary infection of lethal pneumonia-oftentimes never had a chance to establish itself. Instead, the virus caused an uncontrollable hemorrhaging that filled the lungs, and patients would drown in their own body fluids. Micrograph of flu

on periphery Not only was the Spanish Flu strikingly virulent, but it displayed an unusual preference in its choice of victims-tending to select young healthy adults over those with weakened immune systems, as in the very young, the very old, and the infirm. The normal age distribution for flu mortality was completely reversed, and had the effect of gouging from society's infrastructure the bulk of those responsible for its day to day maintenance. No wonder people thought the social order was breaking down. It very nearly did.
But at the close of the First World War, when Spanish Flu appeared, the world was a very different place. Since then, outstanding advances in our knowledge of the germ world have been made, adding dramatically to our repertoire of medical wizardry. Surely what happened back then couldn't happen again.

(AP) The two makers of flu shots in the United States said Friday they have run out of vaccine and will not be able to meet a surge in demand resulting from fears of a particularly bad flu season. Nevertheless, the companies said people who have put off getting their shots may still be able to find them, since distributors and doctors' offices may still have some left. The companies, Chiron and Aventis Pasteur, together made about 80 million doses of the injected vaccine, which ordinarily would be enough to take care of U.S. demand. "Because of the recent outbreak, we've seen an unprecedented surge of vaccine orders late in the season," said Len Lavenda, an Aventis spokesman. "As a result, we have now shipped all our available supplies."

HONG KONG, China (CNN) World Health Organization officials have warned an outbreak of bird flu that has been racing across chicken farms in Asia could become a bigger problem than SARS. Though WHO officials point out there is no evidence of human to human transmission nor is there any documented cases of infection through eating poultry products, they fear the disease may latch on to a normal human influenza virus. Avian influenza is being blamed for at least three deaths in Vietnam during an outbreak there and tests are underway to determine if the disease is responsible for nine more fatalities.
