What is fifth disease?
Fifth disease is a contagious viral illness that is much more common in children than adults. It is also known as "slapped cheek disease" because of the distinctive rash some people develop. Fifth disease is spread mostly by coughs and sneezes. Generally, people can spread fifth disease only when flulike symptoms are present and before a rash develops. Some people with fifth disease, such as those who have certain blood disorders or impaired immune systems , may be contagious for extended periods.

The Facts about Fifth Disease and Parvovirus B19
What is fifth disease?
Fifth disease is a mild rash illness that occurs most commonly in children. The ill child typically has a "slapped-cheek" rash on the face and a lacy red rash on the trunk and limbs. Occasionally, the rash may itch. An ill child may have a low-grade fever, malaise, or a "cold" a few days before the rash breaks out. The child is usually not very ill, and the rash resolves in 7 to 10 days. What causes fifth disease? Fifth disease is caused by infection with human parvovirus B19. This virus infects only humans. Pet dogs or cats may be immunized against "parvovirus," but these are animal parvoviruses that do not infect humans. Therefore, a child cannot "catch" parvovirus from a pet dog or cat, and a pet cat or dog cannot catch human parvovirus B19 from an ill child. Can adults get fifth disease?

This may be followed by a pink, lacy rash on the arms, legs, and trunk. The rash generally causes no discomfort but may be mildly itchy An adult with fifth disease may have no symptoms at all or may have the typical rash. The person may also have

(erythema infectiosum, parvovirus B19 infections)
What is fifth disease?
Fifth disease is a viral infection caused by human parvovirus B19. Fifth disease is not a reportable disease in Wisconsin. In most instances, fifth disease is a relatively mild, self-limited rash illness of childhood; recent studies indicate, however, that infection with parovirus B19 in rare instances can lead to serious complications. Who gets fifth disease?
Anyone can become infected with the virus which causes fifth disease, but the disease is most often recognized in elementary school-aged children. Occurrence of parvovirus B19 infection is worldwide and can occur throughout the year in all age groups as either sporadic cases or as clusters of cases of fifth disease. What are the symptoms of fifth disease and when do they appear?
Four to fourteen days after exposure to the virus, an individual may experience low grade fever and tiredness. This is often followed by a distinctive facial rash often referred to as "slapped cheeks". The facial rash may then progress to a lace-like rash on the trunk, legs, and arms; this rash tends to fade and reappear with changes in temperature, sunlight, and emotional stress. Approximately 20 percent of infected children and adults do not have any symptoms. Some adults do not develop rash but may complain of painful and swollen joints.

My toddler's cheeks are suddenly bright red. What's causing this? It could be fifth disease, also known as "slapped cheeks disease." Fifth disease got its name because it was the fifth identified red rash disease common in childhood. The other four are scarlet fever , measles, rubella , and roseola . This relatively mild illness is caused by the human parvovirus B19, and is most common in preschool- and school-aged children. Babies and adults can get it, but that's rare. Babies are protected from most common childhood diseases up until the age of 8 months or so by the antibodies they received from their mother in the womb. What are the symptoms of fifth disease?

http://www.ryebrookobgyn.com/pateduc/fifth.htm
Q: I am 12 weeks pregnant, and my 5 year old has just been diagnosed with "Fifth Disease." What should I do? A: The first thing that should be done right away, in any pregnant patient, is a blood test for Parvovirus (Fifth Disease) titers. If this shows previous infection, nothing further needs to be done. The patient is immune, and - because of her antibodies - will be able to shield her unborn child from the infection. But if the test shows she is not immune, then a repeat blood test is done 2 weeks later to see if infection actually occurred. (It takes this amount of time to develop antibodies.) The "2 wk test" is done automatically as the presence or absence of symptoms is not a prerequisite. Unfortunately there may be no symptoms to signal that the patient had an infection. Even when the patient had some sort of "symptoms," it is of no help. They might well have been caused by a totally different virus. Only a blood test can really resolve the issue, and hence the reason why we do the test automatically. Please take some comfort in the fact that even without immunity, exposure to Parvovirus does not inevitably lead to infection.

(erythema infectiosum, parvovirus B19 infections) (This material is provided for informational purposes only and is not a substitute for medical care. Direct specific questions to your medical provider.) What is fifth disease?
Fifth disease is a viral infection which often affects red blood cells. It is caused by a human parvovirus (B19). For many years, fifth disease was viewed as an unimportant rash illness of children. Recently, studies have shown that the virus may be responsible for serious complications in certain individuals. Who gets fifth disease?
Anyone can be infected, but the disease seems to occur more often in elementary school-age children. How is the virus spread?
The virus is spread by exposure to airborne droplets from the nose and throat of infected people. What are the symptoms and when do they appear?
One to two weeks after exposure, some children will experience a low grade fever and tiredness. By the third week, a red rash generally appears on the cheeks giving a slapped face appearance. The rash may then extend to the body and tends to fade and reappear. Sometimes, the rash is lacy in appearance and may be itchy. Some children may have vague signs of illness or no symptoms at all. When and for how long is a person able to spread the disease?

It is estimated that about half the adults in the United States have been infected with parvovirus B19 and therefore can not get it again. A red, patchy, "slapped cheek" rash on the face is common during infection The rash may appear on other parts of the body (such as the arms, trunk, buttocks, and thighs). Other symptoms such as fever, headache, body ache, sore throat, congestion, runny nose, cough, nausea, or diarrhea may come before the rash. In adults, joint pains or arthritis may occur. Symptoms usually start 4 to 20 days after a person has been exposed. About 25% of all cases have no symptoms. Fifth Disease Fifth disease is caused by human parvovirus B19. It often affects preschoolers or school-age children during the spring. The disease is spread by contact with respiratory secretions and usually lasts for five days. However, the rash associated with fifth disease may recur for several weeks afterwards. Recurrences may be brought on by exposure to sunlight, heat, exercise, fever, or emotional stress.
The first sign of the disease noticed by parents is usually bright red cheeks, which look as though the child has been recently slapped on both sides of the face. Following this, a rash appears on the extremities and trunk. The rash fades from the center outwards, giving it a lacy appearance. Over a period of 1-2 weeks, the rash disappears entirely. This illness is also sometimes associated with fever.

Fifth Disease
A common virus that can kill babies in utero
by Vicki Caruana
April was used to the routine testing that is done for a pregnant mother.
After all, it was her third pregnancy. All of her blood work came back as
normal -immune to chicken pox, immune to rubella, no indication of hepatitis, no sugar problem indicating gestational diabetes, and no obvious infections. With her mind at ease, April waited through the next six months. But all was not well. April experienced swelling as she had during both of her previous pregnancies. Although her swelling was within normal limits, this time she had joint pain in her hands. Still, she and her doctors were not worried. At her due date, her doctor suggested she be induced if she didn't go into labor soon. But she went into labor on her own and as she and her husband, Anthony, drove to the hospital. April was grateful not to have to be induced. Disaster As the nurse examined April and listened for the baby's heartbeat, the nurse frowned. She said nothing. Her silence grew until it seemed to last
