Fibrocystic Breast Syndrome
Fibrocystic Breast Syndrome June 4, 2002 (Reviewed: September 15, 2003) Question Every other month I get a cystic-type lump on my right breast, about the size of an olive. It causes me a lot of pain; when the skin breaks it bleeds and expels greenish pus. I've had lumps removed in the past 10 years, none of which were called cancerous. I'm 51 years old.
Answer It sounds as if you have fibrocystic breast syndrome. Many women, as many as 50%, suffer from some degree of fibrocystic breast syndrome. These are benign (non-cancerous) lumps filled with fluid that change during your menstrual cycle. They can make your breasts swell and become tender, sometimes painful, just before and during your period. They are hormonally related. For this reason, the best time to examine your breasts is one week after your period. Every woman should do breast self-examination once a month. This condition does not make you more susceptible to breast cancer.
Unfortunately there is no cure for fibrocystic disease. What you put in your body, however, can also make a difference in the amount of swelling and pain you have on a monthly basis. Caffeine intake can greatly influence the tenderness you may have. Limiting caffeine will help alleviate the symptoms of fibrocystic breast syndrome. Some people think of caffeine in the form of coffee only. However, non-herbal teas, sodas, diet sodas, and chocolate all contain caffeine. Some physicians have used buffered vitamin C taken daily as a natural way to alleviate the symptoms of fibrocystic breast syndrome. Check with your doctor to see if this may be right for you.

  • Services at a Glance ... Donations Fibrocystic Breast Condition What is Fibrocystic Breast Condition (FBC)? FBC refers to the breast lumpiness that occurs as a result of tissue changes. This is not a disease process but a variation in the normal changes that occur in the breast. What are the changes? Cysts (tissue sacs filled with fluid) and changes in the fibrous tissue of the breast (scarring) cause lumpiness. These lumps usually come and go in response to the hormone changes associated with the menstrual cycle. The breasts may be painful or tender. Usually both breasts are involved, most often in the upper outer part of the breasts where most of the breast tissue is located. Who is at risk? Most women are affected by FBC. It is the most common benign (not cancer) breast condition. There is no direct relationship to a risk for developing breast cancer. It occurs at any age after the onset of menstruation but is more common between the age of 30 and menopause. Fibrocystic breast condition can occur after menopause, especially in women on hormone replacement therapy. What causes FBC?

www.susunweed.com A few highlights of the history of research on bras and breast disease: 1. In the 1930s a paper was published making a connection between corsets
and increased breast cancer rates. 2. 1978 An M.D. in California pubished an article in a medical journal
linking bras with elevated breast temperature, and he suggested that this
might have a connection with breast cancer. He studied several hundred
women in a medical practice and also observed that the heavier the bra
material, the hotter the breast, and that bra-free women of all sizes
had cooler breasts. (The Lancet, November 4, 1978, P. 1001 Dr. John M.

article on breast cancer risk. As a side issue of their paper, they mention that the women in their study that did not wear bras had a 60% lower rate of breast cancer than the women who wore bras.

What is fibrocystic breast disease?
Theories as to cause, treatments, symptoms of fibrocystic breast disease.
Not being a vain person, I never gave a real thought to my breasts. They are a part of me that fed my two youngest children which I have always taken for granted. That is until the day I started having pain in my right one. I am an active woman who thinks nothing of carrying lumber, sacks of concrete, hanging doors or even building walls so I took it for granted the pain was a result of straining a muscle. The problem is the pain didn't disappear for several weeks. I finally started checking the breast and thought I felt something funny. Again I waited. I kept telling myself it was in my head and nothing was really wrong. Then my husband found out he insisted I go to the doctor to be checked. bodyOffer(28863) I made my appointment for the next week and kept assuring him and myself that it was just in my head. Convincing myself that nothing was there. Setting myself up to be broadsided when the doctor said that something was there. From there, tests were scheduled and for two weeks I worried over my breast. I never really considered them much until the thought of losing one. I thought of how I would feel about having one breast and how it might affect my husband; a self admitted breast man. Over and over he assured me it would make no difference. Over and over I would dwell on possible outcomes.

    Fibrocystic Breast Changes
    What are fibrocystic breast changes?
Fibrocystic breast changes are the most common cause of breast tenderness and breast lumps. Fibrocystic breast lumps are cysts; that is, fluid-filled sacs surrounded by fibrous tissue. These cysts are not caused by cancer. Fibroadenomas, another common cause of breast lumps, are solid lumps of fibrous tissue. They are not caused by cancer either.
    How does it occur?

    Basic Information
Description A common condition of the female breast characterized usually by nonmalignant lumps and pain. It can affect females from puberty to around age 50 (about 20% of pre-menopausal women have the disorder). It often disappears after menopause (unless estrogen-replacement therapy is used). Since it is so common, it is no longer considered a disease, and is usually not a cause for concern Frequent Signs and Symptoms
    • Lumps are usually in both breasts. Solitary lumps may occur, but multiple lumps are common
    • Lumps offer resistance when pressed with fingertips; they may be tender
    • Generalized breast pain, especially just before menstrual periods
    • Lumps often enlarge before menstrual periods and shrink afterward
    • Lumps come in different sizes. When the lumps are relatively large and near the surface, they can be moved freely within the breast
    • Lumps deep within the breast may be indistinguishable from breast cancer
    • Nipple discharge
Causes Unknown, but probably related to estrogen and other hormones produced by the ovaries and possibly to dietary fat intake
