Fibrocystic breast condition is a common benign problem for many women. It is estimated that over 50% of women have clear signs of fibrocystic breasts and 90% have some cellular changes associated with the condition. However, many women will notice no particular discomfort. The degree of breast pain experienced varies among women and is sometimes different with each menstrual period, or at different times in a woman's life cycle. Fibrocystic breast condition can occur at any age after menstruation starts, although the frequency peaks between age 30 and menopause. It rarely occurs after menopause. Breast self-exam is an important way to follow the changes in your breasts. If you know what your "baseline lumpiness" feels like, you will be more able to determine if one cyst displays persistent increase in size and seems to "stand out" from the background tissues, or if a cyst has become attached to underlying tissue and is no longer moveable. In such cases, you must see your medical provider for further evaluation. A breast check by your medical provider is also an important part of your annual women's health exam.

Fibrocystic Breasts: Cause for Concern? More attention should be paid to conditions unique to women WASHINGTON, DC - At least 50 percent of all women experience lumpy, painful, swollen breasts at some point in their lives, according to the American Cancer Society. This benign condition, fibrocystic breast change, is most common in women aged 30 to 50, but it can occur at any age. Fibrocystic breast changes include variations in tissue that occur during the menstrual cycle as well as benign lumps and fluid filled sacs or cysts. For many women, this condition is extremely painful. Though sometimes mistakenly referred to as a disease, fibrocystic changes occur in varying degrees in almost all women over 30. In 95 percent of cases, fibrocystic breast changes do not increase a woman's risk of breast cancer. They do, however, lead to thicker and denser breast tissue, which can mask cancerous changes. Thus, this condition can make breast exams and mammograms difficult to interpret, rendering early breast cancer detection more challenging. For most women, the bulk of the problem is pain management, for which there is currently no treatment available. "Eight out of 10 lumps I evaluate are benign and most of these are due to fibrocystic breast changes," said George N. Peters, MD, executive director of the UT Southwestern Center for Breast Care in Dallas. This does not mean women who know or suspect they have fibrocystic breasts should ignore lumps. Instead, if they are premenopausal and they find a lump, they should wait one menstrual cycle; in 60-70 percent of cases, the lump will go away. If it doesn't, she should see her doctor immediately, said Dr. Peters, who notes that women have to learn to recognize changes via consistent monthly breast self exams (BSE).

Fibrocystic breast changes: lumps that are normal
by Elaine Gottlieb Do your breasts feel lumpy? In most cases, you're probably experiencing fibrocystic breast change a benign condition that occurs in at least 60 percent of all women of child-bearing age. It sounds very unglamorous, but the human breast is no more than a lumpy gland made up of milk glands and ducts and the tissues that separate and support them. Most breasts have at least a lump or two; however, if your breast feels especially lumpy and uncomfortable, you're probably experiencing fibrocystic breast changes. What are fibrocystic changes? Fibrocystic changes are benign breast changes. The medical literature used to refer to them as "fibrocystic disease," but that was before fibrocystic changes were found to be no more a disease than menstruation or menopause . The breast tissue may feel dense with an irregular area of thicker tissue with a lumpy or ridge-like surface. You might also feel tiny bead-like masses scattered throughout the breasts. Your breasts may feel tender, swollen and full with a dull, heavy pain. They may be sensitive to touch with a burning sensation. This discomfort is normal and does not indicate the presence of disease. For some women the pain is so severe that they cannot exercise or lie on their stomachs. Fibrocystic changes usually occur in both breasts, most often in the upper outer quadrant and the underside of the breast where most of the milk-producing glands are located.

Fibrocystic Breasts Fibrocystic breast is the most common benign (noncancerous) breast condition in women of childbearing age. About one of every five women, ages 25-50, develops fibrocystic breasts at some point. The condition is characterized by:
  • breast lumps tenderness pain
Symptoms tend to worsen just before the menstrual period begins and tend to ease after the period. What causes fibrocystic breasts? The lumps, tenderness, and pain appear to be a response to the same hormones that regulate the menstrual cycle - an exaggerated response to a normal process. This condition usually clears up when a woman's periods cease at the time of menopause. What changes take place in the breast?

Fibrocystic Breasts
Fibrocystic Breast Condition ("lumpy breasts") What is that? About half of all women have naturally "lumpy" breasts. That is, they have round, firm, rubbery lumps in both breasts. These lumps usually aren't painful, but in the week or so before each period, they may become tender or painful. This used to be called a "disease" but now most experts consider the condition a variation of normal breasts, not a disease. The condition and its symptoms are more common in women in their thirties or forties - not so much in teens. But one word of caution: Since fibrocystic condition doesn't increase the risk of breast cancer, some women may say, "Oh, my breasts are so lumpy, there's no point in examining them each month." WRONG! You should examine your breasts every month just after each period. You'll become familiar with the areas of your breasts that are often thicker and lumpier. If anything feels or looks different, don't panic, but see a doctor. Even strange new lumps aren't usually cancerous so don't panic, but do get professional advice. How do you treat it?

Fibrocystic Breasts Fibrocystic breasts, also known as benign breast disease, mammary dysplasia, and mastodynia, is the most common benign breast problem affecting American women. Doctors frequently diagnose any woman who is experiencing breast pain, lumpiness, or other symptoms as having fibrocystic breasts. The percentage of affected women varies from 20% to 50%; some estimates are even higher. This may be a normal condition. The fact that this condition is often characterized as a "disease" makes women afraid when they most likely have no reason to be. Although October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, women need to be aware of their breast self-exams every month. No one, not even your doctor, knows your body like you do. Many women, as many as fifty percent, suffer from fibrocystic breast syndrome . These are benign (non-cancerous) lumps filled with fluid that change during your menstrual cycle. They can make your breasts swell and become tender, sometimes painful, just before and during your period. They are hormonally related. For this reason, the best time to examine your breasts is one week after your period. Everyone should do a breast self-examination once a month. Pamphlets and instruction is available in your doctor's office or by request from the American Cancer Society, Avon Products, or pharmaceutical companies, such as Wyeth-Ayerst. This condition DOES NOT MAKE YOU MORE SUSCEPTIBLE TO BREAST CANCER. What you put in your body can also make a difference in the amount of swelling and pain you have on a monthly basis. Caffeine intake can greatly influence the tenderness you may have. Limiting caffeine will help alleviate the symptoms of fibrocystic breast syndrome. Some people think of caffeine in the form of coffee only However, non-herbal teas, sodas, diet sodas, and chocolate al contain caffeine. Buffered Vitamin C taken daily is a natural way to alleviate the symptoms of fibrocystic breast syndrome. The usual dosage is 1500 mg per day. You should

What is Fibrocystic Disease of the Breasts?
Fibrocystic breast disease is a noncancerous condition constant or intermittent causing pain. Fibrocystic disease of the breasts primarily occurs in women in the childbearing years. It is most common between 30 and 50 years of age. Some researchers estimate that up to 70 percent of women in their twenties and up to 60 percent in their thirties have some type of fibrocystic condition. It occurs much less frequently in menopausal women and is more likely in women who are not receiving hormone replacement therapy. It is the most frequent cause of lumps in the breast in women of all ages. Often described in popular language as "lumpy breasts," this condition isn't really a disease but a condition that occurs because of extreme fluctuations in your hormones. If you have this condition, you're not alone. More than half of premenopausal women will experience this condition at one time or another. If you have notice one or more lumps of different sizes. Breast lumps ranging from microscopic cysts to lumps the size of golf ball sized. They often create a lumpy or pebbly feeling. They often cause pain or tenderness in the week to two weeks before the onset of menstruation and frequently disappear immediately after the onset of menstruation. Some women may find that their lumps do not disappear and are ultimately present all the time.

What do doctors say about fibrocystic breast disease and bra wearing?
In Western countries such as the USA, a large percentage of women experience benign (non-cancerous) but often quite painful cysts and lumps in their breasts. Many women, and unfortunately many doctors, think that fibrocystic breast disease is a "normal" condition for women. Some even say that it is not a "disease." However, some doctors feel that fibrocystic is a real disease that needs to be dealt with. Below are listed some quotes from doctors who do believe that going brafree can greatly reduce or even totally eliminate breast pain and fibrocystic cysts. " After repeated bouts of inflammation, the breasts develop scar tissue in many places, and some of the milk ducts become plugged, forming cysts. Fibrocystic breast disease, not surprisingly, is associated with a higher risk of breast cancer. "

Are there any dietary or life style factors associated with FCC?
Caffeine has been implicated as contributing to both the symptoms and scarring (fibrocystic) changes in FCC. However, when the scientific evidence is reviewed, the results are conflicting. Additionally, there appears to be no evidence that caffeine increases the risk of breast cancer. However, in women with FCC, it might still be worth a trial of caffeine restriction. (Note that coffee is not the only source of caffeine. Tea, chocolate, and certain soft drinks also contain caffeine.) There is no harm in trying caffeine avoidance and there may be a few FCC patients for whom it is beneficial. At this time, there is a great deal of circumstantial evidence that dietary and hormonal factors can affect FCC and its associated risk of breast cancer. It has been shown that many foods contain natural chemical compounds known as "antioxidants." Antioxidants can reduce the cellular damage that is produced by environmental and metabolic processes. Other compounds in these foods can also help stimulate the detoxifying enzyme systems in the body. Since there are many potentially toxic agents that are consumed or acquired from the environment, any assistance to the normal detoxifying systems is likely to reduce the risk of accumulated genetic damage. Some of these antioxidant compounds are contained in tea, especially green tea. These chemicals, called polyphenols, have recently been found to actually modify and suppress tumor cell function.

What are the symptoms of fibrocystic breast disease? Both breasts become tender or painful and lumpy, and these symptoms vary at different times in the menstrual cycle. Despite the fact that signs and symptoms of FBD appear to be quite distinct from textbook signs and symptoms of breast cancer , any lump in the breast should be diagnosed by a doctor to rule out the possibility of cancer.
