Magnesium is a must. The diets of all Americans are likely to be deficient........Even a mild deficiency causes sensitiveness to noise, nervousness, irritability, mental depression, confusion, twitching, trembling, apprehension, insomnia, muscle weakness and cramps in the toes, feet, legs, or fingers. Adelle Davis, writing in Let's Have Healthy Children Read my Magnesium (Mg) is a trace mineral that is known to be required for several hundred different functions in the body. A significant portion of the symptoms of many chronic disorders are identical to symptoms of magnesium deficiency. Studies show many people in the U.S. today do not consume the daily recommended amounts of Mg. A lack of this important nutrient may be a major factor in many common health problems in industrialized countries. The Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: A Comprehensive Approach to Its Definition and Study
Abstract of the paper on a New Case Definition for CFS 1994
The complexities of the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and the methodologic problems associated with its study indicate the need for a comprehensive, systematic, and integrated approach to the evaluation, classification, and study of persons with this condition and other fatiguing illnesses. We propose a conceptual framework and a set of guidelines that provide such an approach. Our guidelines include recommendations for the clinical evaluation of fatigued persons, a revised case definition of the chronic fatigue syndrome, and a strategy for sub grouping fatigued persons in formal investigations.

I'm a CFS sufferer and I've published here my test results. I was told by my GP that I would never find anything wrong and to give up my quest to find abnormality. Luckily I took no notice. Both are much more common than people think and doctors usually don't look for them. I have added two pages on these. Welcome to my web-site. It contains information not only on CFS, but also irritable bowel syndrome and fibromyalgia. (Many people that have one also have the others.) The purpose of this site is to integrate the ideas I've gotten from different people and add a few of my own. I have kept a careful journal of what has helped and what has not. I work with an excellent doctor. I've found that while many people have parts of the answer, no one knows the whole answer. The purpose of this site is to bring together as many of those answers as possible. Eight years ago I was suffering from full-fledged Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. I was in a constant fog, had constant ringing in my ears, sinus problems, pain in the joints, a sore throat, and a persistent jock rash. My body temperature was 97.2°f. I had severe gastrointestinal problems. Sexually, I had little feeling.

WHAT CAUSES CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME?
General Theories for Chronic Fatigue Causes
Theories abound about the causes of chronic fatigue syndrome. Many physicians still doubt that CFS is an actual disease but believe rather that it is a component of a psychological disorder or a symptom of other problems, similar to anemia and high blood pressure. Indeed, no primary cause has been found that explains all cases of CFS. And, there are no consistent biologic factors that would allow objective measures, such as blood tests or brain scans, to definitively diagnose CFS.
Convergence of Factors. A number of experts believe that CFS develops from a convergence of conditions that may include the following:
  • Genetic factors.
    Brain abnormalities.
    A hyper-reactive immune system.
    Viral or other infectious agents.
    Psychiatric or emotional conditions.
For example, the majority of patients report some preceding moderate to serious physical illness (e.g., a chronic viral infection) or emotional event (e.g., episode of depression). Some experts theorize that such events, alone or in combination, may interact with certain neurologic and genetic abnormalities to trigger the event. Still, it is not clear what sequence of events actually leads to the fatigue and other prominent symptoms of this disorder. Nor is there any specific brain or nervous system abnormality that experts can point to with assurance. Research published in 2001 indicates that CFS is more common among identical twins (who share the same genes) than fraternal twins (who share only some genes). Inheritance, then, may play a role in roughly 30% to 50% of cases, similar to the influence thought to occur in depression or alcoholism, although specific genes have not yet been identified.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
WHAT IS CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME AND ITS SYMPTOMS?
Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), also sometimes called immune dysfunction syndrome or myalgic encephalomyelitis (in Europe), is not a new disorder. In the 19th century the term neurasthenia, or nervous exhaustion, was applied to symptoms resembling CFS. In the 1930s through the 1950s outbreaks of disease marked by prolonged fatigue were reported in the United States and many other countries. Beginning in the early to mid-1980s interest in chronic fatigue syndrome was revived by reports in America and other countries of various outbreaks of long-term debilitating fatigue.
Fatigue that lasts for more than six months, impairs normal activities, and has no identifiable medical or psychological problems to account for it is referred to as unexplained chronic fatigue. These symptoms can be further categorized as follows:
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). A number of criteria must be met in order for a patient's symptoms to be described as CFS. [For a list see Box Criteria for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome]. It should be noted that six million patient visits are made each year because of fatigue, although only a very small percentage of these can be attributed to actual chronic fatigue syndrome

... Autoimmune Disease: Overview
What is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)?
Having chronic fatigue syndrome , or CFS, means more than just getting tired. With the busy lives American women lead, we all get tired from time to time. But, the fatigue with CFS is extreme and overwhelming, and doesn't get better with bed rest. And, it is often made worse with physical or mental activity. This illness seems to happen all of a sudden - one day you may notice that you are very tired and can't manage your normal activities. Your energy level is lower and you often get tired for no reason. You may also feel weak and have muscle pain, difficulty focusing, or insomnia (not being able to sleep). After you engage in physical activity or exert yourself, you may feel tired for more than 24 hours. The extreme fatigue may then come and go, giving you times when your energy level is normal. Sometimes, though, the extreme tiredness never stops, leaving you feeling exhausted and depleted all the time. You notice that you can't get done in a day what you normally would have been able to, before having this condition. CFS is diagnosed only when other possible causes of the fatigue are ruled out, and the fatigue has lasted for at least 6 months. There are treatments to help a person cope with CFS, some of which include medication. Sometimes CFS goes away on its own or a person can have long periods of time, even years, without symptoms.
