Lasik Eye Surgery - Series Farsightedness is the result of the visual image being focused behind the retina rather than directly on it. It may be caused by the eyeball being too small or the focusing power being too weak. Farsightedness is often present from birth, but children can often tolerate moderate amounts without difficulty and most outgrow the condition. As aging occurs, glasses or contact lenses may be required to correct the vision. A family history of farsightedness is a risk factor.

Farsightedness
Overview
Farsightedness is caused by structural distortions within the eye. Your eyes focus past the retina. This occurs if your eyeball is too short or the cornea has too little curvature. With aging, the lens becomes less flexible and cannot accommodate as well to close objects. This condition, called presbyopia , accounts for the development of farsightedness after the age of 40. Risk factors that increase your chance of getting farsightedness include:
  • age 40 or older (presbyopia) family member with hyperopia

Nearsightedness and Farsightedness
(Myopia and Hyperopia)
by Michelle Badash, MS
Definition
In nearsightedness, or myopia, vision is better up close than at a distance. In farsightedness, or hyperopia, vision is often better at a distance than up close (although it may be blurry both at a distance and up close).
Causes
Both of these conditions are caused by structural distortions within the eye.
Myopia
In myopia, your eyes focus ahead of the retina. This usually occurs with an eyeball that is longer or a cornea that is steeper than normal.
Hyperopia
In hyperopia, your eyes focus past the retina. This usually occurs if your eyeball is too short or the cornea has too little curvature. With aging, the lens of the eye becomes less flexible and cannot focus as well on close objects. This condition, called presbyopia, accounts for the development of farsightedness in most people after the age of 40.
Risk Factors
A risk factor is something that increases your chance of getting a disease or condition. Risk factors are slightly different for the two types of vision disorders.

58. Vision & Eyesight: Farsightedness
Vision Eyesight farsightedness. We would call it farsightedness (hyperopia). Uncorrected, farsightedness basically means you can t see things close up.
http://regentsprep.org/Regents/physics/phys09/ceyes/far.htm
If the lens in the eye is too weak, or the cornea is too thin, or the eye is too short, it will cause the real image to get formed in beyond the retina. This will cause a blurred image. We would call it farsightedness (hyperopia). Uncorrected, farsightedness basically means you can't see things close up. Since the problem is that the rays aren't converging soon enough, we need to increase the convergence. Farsightedness is usually corrected by placing a converging lens in the front eye. ©1999 Science Joy Wagon
