Farsightedness, also known as hyperopia, is the inability to focus on objects that are close to the eyes. It is caused by an eyeball that is too short, causing light rays to focus behind the retina, instead of directly on the retina, which is necessary for normal vision. Farsightedness usually starts in childhood and typically stabilizes in the late teens or early adulthood. Farsighted people sometimes have headaches or eyestrain, and may squint or feel fatigued when performing work at close range. If you get these symptoms while wearing your glasses or contact lenses, you may need an eye exam and a new prescription.

Normal, near, and farsightedness Normal vision occurs when light is focused directly on the retina rather than in front or behind it. A person with normal vision can see objects clearly near and faraway. Nearsightedness results in blurred vision when the visual image is focused in front of the retina, rather than directly on it. It occurs when the physical length of the eye is greater than the optical length. For this reason, nearsightedness often develops in the rapidly growing school-aged child or teenager, and progresses during the growth years, requiring frequent changes in glasses or contact lenses. A nearsighted person sees near objects clearly, while objects in the distance are blurred. Farsightedness is the result of the visual image being focused behind the retina rather than directly on it. FARSIGHTEDNESS Answers To Your Questions About: What is farsightedness?
Farsightedness, or hyperopia, as it is medically termed, is a vision condition in which distant objects are usually seen clearly, but, close ones are not brought into proper focus. Why does farsightedness occur? If the length of your eyeball is too short or the cornea has too little curvature, near objects cannot be brought into sharp and clearly focused images. Hereditary factors often control the growth and development of the eye. However; environmental factors may also contribute to the development of farsightedness. How common is farsightedness? Many people have some degree of farsightedness. The condition is only a problem if it significantly affects a persons ability to see. It is estimated that over half the people who wear glasses are wearing them because of a focusing problem due to farsightedness or presbyopia, a natural decrease in focusing ability at near distance. What are signs/symptoms of farsightedness?

    http://www.stlukeseye.com/farsightedness.htm
    Farsightedness (Hyperopia)
Overview Farsightedness or hyperopia , occurs when light entering the eye focuses behind the retina , instead of directly on it. This is caused by a cornea that is flatter, or an eye that is shorter, than a normal eye. Farsighted people usually have trouble seeing up close, but may also have difficulty seeing far away as well. Young people with mild to moderate hyperopia are often able to see clearly because their natural lens can adjust, or accommodate to increase the eye’s focusing ability. However, as the eye gradually loses the ability to accommodate (beginning at about 40 years of age), blurred vision from hyperopia often becomes more apparent.
    Signs and Symptoms
    • Difficulty seeing up close Blurred distance vision (occurs with higher amounts of hyperopia) Eye fatigue when reading Eye strain (headaches, pulling sensation, burning) Crossed eyes in children

    Detection and Diagnosis
Hyperopia is detected with a vision test called a refraction. Young patients’ eyes are dilated for this test so they are unable to mask their farsightedness with accommodation. This is called a wet refraction.

    Questions and Answers about Farsightedness
  • What is farsightedness?
Farsightedness, technically called hyperopia, is a vision condition in which distant objects are usually seen clearly, but close objects are not brought into proper focus.
  • Why does farsightedness occur?
If the length of the eyeball is too short, the crystalline lens of the eye cannot bring near objects into a sharp and clearly focused image. Some theorists believe that farsightedness is hereditary while others believe that is may result from environmental factors.
  • How does farsightedness affect vision?
The farsighted person subconsciously exerts extra effort to maintain clear distance vision and even greater effort to see clearly at close range. This extra effort can cause fatigue, tension, and discomfort. If the eye is too short or the image too close, blurred vision occurs.
  • How common is farsightedness?
Many individuals have some degree of farsightedness. This condition is only a problem if it significantly affects a person's ability to see. It is estimated that over half of all people who wear glasses are wearing them because of a focusing problem due to farsightedness or presbypoia.

Corneal Refractive Therapy (CRT) is a technologically advanced, non-surgical process, which reshapes the cornea while the patient sleeps. The specially designed therapeutic contact lenses are removed while awake and the patient is able to go throughout the day without any assisting correction. The correction is not permanent; it is temporary. If the patient discontinues wearing the lenses, the vision will return to its original state in as little as 72 hrs.

    Farsightedness
    (Hyperopia)

Farsightedness (hyperopia) is a vision condition in which distant objects are seen clearly, but close ones do not come into proper focus. This common condition occurs if your eyeball is too short or the cornea has too little curvature, so light entering your eye is not focused correctly. Common signs of farsightedness includes difficulty in concentrating and maintaining a clear focus on near objects, eye strain, fatigue and/or headaches after close work, aching or burning eyes, irritability or nervousness after sustained concentration. In mild cases of farsightedness, your eyes may be able to compensate without corrective lenses. In other cases, eyeglasses or contact lenses may correct this condition by altering the way the light enters your eyes.
