Dr. Peter Voitl Was sind Ringelröteln?

Enter search items Childhood Diseases Also indexed as: Chicken Pox, Erythema infectiosum , Fifth Disease, German Measles, Roseola infantum , Rubella, Scarlet Fever Some of the most common illnesses of childhood cause skin eruptions and are known as exanthems. The childhood exanthems include rubeola ( measles ), rubella (German measles), chicken pox, erythema infectiosum (fifth disease), and roseola infantum, all of which are viral infections, as well as scarlet fever, a bacterial infection. All of these infections affect the respiratory system and are highly contagious. Children with these illnesses usually recover fully even without treatment; however, all of these conditions carry the possibility of severe complications, such as pneumonia, heart and kidney damage, and encephalitis (inflammation of the brain). Vaccinations and other changes in modern lifestyle have rendered several of these previously common illnesses virtually nonexistent in the developed world, though they are widespread and remain a major cause of childhood deaths in other parts of the world.

ERYTHEMA INFECTIOSUM GENERAL INFORMATION: What is it? Erythema (air-uh-THEE-muh) infectiosum (in-fek-tee-O-sum) is also called fifth disease. It is a mild infection (in-FEK-shun) that is most common in school-aged children. Fifth disease usually happens during winter and early spring. Your child may first have cold-like symptoms. Then a red face rash and lace-like body rash may appear and last up to 10 days. There is no vaccine or medicine to prevent fifth disease. What causes fifth disease? Fifth disease is caused by a virus (germ) called parvovirus B19. It is spread by breathing, drinking, or eating after a sick person. It can also be spread from having a blood transfusion (trans-FEW-shun). A blood transfusion is a procedure in which blood is given to your child through an IV (small tube placed in your child's blood vessel). What are the signs and symptoms? Children may become sick up to 3 weeks after being exposed to (in contact with) fifth disease. While most children have some symptoms of fifth disease, some children have no symptoms at all. Fifth disease usually happens in stages.
  • At first, you may think your child has a cold.

Alternate Names : Erythema Infectiosum, Parvovirus B19, Slapped Cheek Definition Fifth disease is a viral illness with mild symptoms and a blotchy rash. The rash begins on the cheeks and spreads to the arms and legs.
Fifth Disease Fifth disease is caused by human parvovirus B19. It often affects preschoolers or school-age children during the spring. The disease is spread by contact with respiratory secretions and usually lasts for five days. However, the rash associated with fifth disease may recur for several weeks afterwards. Recurrences may be brought on by exposure to sunlight, heat, exercise, fever, or emotional stress.
The first sign of the disease noticed by parents is usually bright red cheeks, which look as though the child has been recently slapped on both sides of the face. Following this, a rash appears on the extremities and trunk. The rash fades from the center outwards, giving it a lacy appearance. Over a period of 1-2 weeks, the rash disappears entirely. This illness is also sometimes associated with fever.
