Main Home Page Sexual Issues and Solutions Home Page ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION Male erectile dysfunction currently effects approximately 10 to 30 million men living in the United States. Also commonly called "impotence"; erectile dysfunction can be defined as: "The inability to obtain and sustain an erection satisfactory for sexual intercourse." Cause There can be many causes of erectile dysfunction. Generally these causes are grouped into the following five categories: 1) Neurologic 2) Vascular 3) Endocrine 4) Pharmacologic 5) Psychogenic Treatment In order to appropriately treat erectile dysfunction, determining the actual cause of the problem is the first line of therapy. Current research suggests that in order to discover the 'real' problem the individual should undergo a comprehensive evaluation by both a medical specialist and a psychologist or mental health worker. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recommends that this evaluation include: physical examination, psychosocial evaluation, and specific laboratory studies as needed. Many treatments for erectile dysfunction include both a medical and a psychological intervention. Psychological interventions are used not only in treatment of the dysfunction, but are also used to help the individual (and the couple) deal with the sensitivity of the subject material. Types There are two types of erectile dysfunction: Primary and Secondary.

A new study shows that erectile dysfunction (ED) or difficulty maintaining or achieving an erect penis sufficient for sexual intercourse may be a warning sign of blood vessel disease in other parts of the body in men without risk factors for heart disease. "If a patient does have erectile dysfunction, then we can speculate that he probably has some early disease in other blood vessels in other parts of his body," says researcher Alan Bank, MD, of the St. Paul Heart Clinic in St. Paul, Minn., in a news release. "We don't know if these men are going to go on to develop heart attacks and strokes, but the next step is to look at men like this, and follow them out over time, and see if they are at risk for having other major vascular events."

Impotence (Erectile Dysfunction)
WHAT IS IMPOTENCE (ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION)?
Impotence is the inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficiently rigid for sexual intercourse, ejaculation, or both. Sexual drive and the ability to have an orgasm are not necessarily affected. Impotence is medically defined as the inability to sustain an erection sufficient for intercourse on at least 25% of attempts.
Impotence is not new in medicine or human experience, but it is not easily or openly discussed. Cultural expectations of male sexuality inhibit many men from seeking help for a disorder that can, in most cases, benefit from medical treatment. The term "impotence"; comes from Latin and means loss of power; a more accurate term is "erectile dysfunction." The condition is normal and usually temporary, so it is highly unfortunate that the common term for it implies a sweeping diminution in a man's overall capabilities.

Erectile dysfunction , or ED, is a disorder where a man cannot achieve and maintain an erection of the penis. It can have dramatic effects on them and also their partner. Who suffers from it? A recent survey of 1 000 men in the United Kingdom, aged between 18 and 75, showed that 39% reported experiencing some form of erectile dysfunction . In the United States, an estimated 30 million men suffer from the condition. Many report depression and the condition can put a tremendous strain on their relationships. Erectile dysfunction can be caused by a range of underlying problems. Vascular disease , smoking, diabetes, trauma to the spine, drug abuse and psychological problems can all contribute to the development of ED. Often, these can go untreated because the man suffering from ED is too embarassed to talk to his doctor, or even his partner, about the condition. Wife of Patient Picture 25. Erectile Dysfunction: Serious Research for a Serious Problem
By Barry A. Palevitz and Ricki Lewis You have probably heard more than your share of Viagra jokes; a whole Web site is devoted to them. But impotence, or erectile dysfunction (ED), is no joke. According to a survey (H.A. Feldman et al., Journal of Urology, :54-61, 1994), more than 50 percent of men between 40 and 70 suffer from some degree of ED. The figure climbs to 67 percent at age 70. That's 20 to 30 million men, according to the National Institutes of Health.
FIRST IN LINE: Viagra is actually the second drug approved to treat ED. More than 600,000 men have used MUSE, Vivus' formulation, since its approval in November 1996. MUSE is a suppository inserted into the tip of the penis (using the applicator pictured above), where the drug diffuses from the urethra into the spongy erectile tissue and causes rigidity within 10 minutes. ED strikes deep at the male psyche, but its impact on couples is just as important. Over the centuries, men have tried everything from camel hump fat to jackal bile to various herbal remedies to treat the condition. More recently, penile implants and injections have worked, but they are too invasive to have achieved great popularity. So it isn't surprising that a blue pill, with a 50 percent efficacy rate, introduced by Pfizer Pharmaceuticals Corp., of Groton, Conn., in the spring of 1998 would be worth its weight in gold. "In the U.S., we are a uniquely pill-taking society," and that is particularly so for treating ED, says Bill Smith, vice president for research and development at Vivus Inc. of Mountain View, Calif., which markets and investigates new treatments for ED.
