Epilepsy
is stigmatised, overlooked, and misunderstood and has been throughout history. The truth is that over 1.5 million people in the UK will experience an epileptic seizure at some time in their lives. An even more alarmingfact is that an estimated 5 million will be caught up in its consequences. With correct early diagnosis by a neurologist specialising in epilepsy and the latest medication, 75%-80% of epilepsy sufferers could be seizure-free.
In 2000 in the UK, 1098 people died as a result of epilepsy 177 (up 120). SIX times more than HIV/AIDS 177 (down 18), illustrating the low profile, lack of celebrity support and scandalously low investment in epilepsy research to find better treatments and ways of prevention.

Epilepsy Syndromes: A Guide Introduction This set of notes is not meant to be all inclusive of the presently defined epilepsy syndromes. The classification of epilepsy syndromes can be a contentious issue. The following is an simplified presentation of the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) Commision's Classification by one clinician. Scholarly readers are referred to the last revision on the classification of epilepsy syndromes in : Epilepsia 1989;30:389-399. I have avoided making notes on Seizure classification. Interested readers are directed to review concepts laid forth in Neurology 1993;43:1650-1655. About classifications
  • They are useful if they help us in the treatment and counsel of our patients and/or enable us to understand the basis for a patients epileptic seizures
  • Lumpers vs. splitters: it is perhaps best to strive for parsimony while being alert to unique fetures which might give clues to the underlying biology
  • We need to know more but there are patients to treat in the meantime !
International Classification of Epileptic Seizures
  • a composite of clinical features and EEG a compact way of describing seizure symptomology
  • similar ictal behaviour change can result from different substrates relation to treatment choice is not as clear cut as we like to believe
  • describes common seizure phenomenology only
Limitations of seizure classification
  • describes common seizure phenomenology only
  • cannot reliably distinguish partial from generalized origin of seizures is a crude guide to selection of drug treatment

Columbia University Seeks Volunteers for Study of Heredity in Epilepsy The Epilepsy Family Study of Columbia University, led by Dr. Ruth Ottman, Professor of Epidemiology at the Mailman School of Public Health of Columbia University, is seeking volunteers for a study of the role of heredity in epilepsy. What are our research goals and why are they important? Who is eligible? What is asked of volunteers?
What are our research goals and why are they important?
Our goal is to identify genes that play a role in causing epilepsy. Identification of the genes that raise risk for epilepsy is potentially very important for early identification and treatment of susceptible individuals. It could also provide important basic information about the causes of epilepsy. This new information could lead to development of new treatments or strategies for prevention.
Who is eligible?

pilepsy (ep-i-lep-sy) is sometimes called a seizure disorder. A seizure disorder is a kind of illness that only happens sometimes. It's not the kind of illness that makes you feel sick inside. It's not the kind of illness that makes you cough and sneeze. It's not the kind of illness that means you have to stay in bed and have your temperature taken. A child who has epilepsy feels just as healthy as everyone else most of the time. But sometimes she/he may have a seizure. This Website is all about seizures. If you have epilepsy, it's good to find out as much as you can about it. You'll know how your seizures happen You'll know how your medicine works and why you have to take it every day. Then you can tell other boys and girls who might want to know. If there's something on this Website that you don't understand, ask your mom or dad to explain it to you. If you have a special question about your seizure disorder, ask your doctor about it when you go for your next check up.
