Eosinophilia
Eosinophilia is the state of having too many eosinophil s in the blood. Eosinophils are increased in parasitic infections, allergic disorders and in some drug reactions. They are also produced in excess in some forms of chronic myeloid leukaemia. The release of interleukin-5 by T cell s, mast cell s and macrophage s stimulates the production of eosinophils. Home Eosinophilia DESCRIPTION The condition of having an absolute (compared to a relative) increase in the number of eosinophils in the circulating blood. The absolute number is obtained by multiplying the percentage of eosinophils times the white blood cell count. An eosinophil is a type of white blood cell. Eosinophils are produced in the bone marrow and are normally found in the bloodstream and the gut lining. They contain proteins that help the body to fight infection from parasitic organisms, such as worms. But in certain diseases these proteins can damage the body.
Eosinophilia occurs in a wide range of conditions. Its commonest causes are allergic diseases such as asthma and hay fever, whereas worldwide the main cause is parasitic infection. It can also occur in relation to common skin diseases, medicine reactions, and parasitic infections. Other rarer causes include:
  • Lung diseases, eg Loeffler's syndrome

Patients with eosinophilia have an abnormally high number of eosinophils, a type of white blood cell, in their blood. Eosinophilia is not a type of cancer but it often occurs in reaction to something else in the body. High levels of eosinophils indicate that the body may be reacting to an allergen or parasite, or to substances produced by the cells of cancers such as Hodgkin's disease and chronic myeloid leukemia. Thus, eosinophilia is most commonly a reaction to a disease process rather than a specific disease itself. Eosinophilic leukemia is a rare cause of eosinophilia; it is treated similarly to other forms of acute leukemia. Treatments are generally aimed at the underlying allergic, parasitic, or malignant disorder.

In countries where parasitic diseases are prevalent, these infections cause most cases of eosinophilia. Elsewhere, the majority of patients with eosinophilia are found to have atopy or, less often, drug hypersensitivity or a skin disease. There are numerous other causes of eosinophilia, but individually they are all rare. Eosinophilia may be primary or secondary. In patients with secondary eosinophilia, hematopoietic cells are normal and the increased production of eosinophils is a cytokine-driven reactive process. In patients with primary eosinophilia, there is an acquired abnormality of a hematopoietic stem cell. In some cases, differentiation is mainly to cells of the eosinophil Full Text of this Article References
