Oxford Endometriosis Gene Study
The OXEGENE study, based at the University of Oxford, is part of the International Endogene Study, a world-wide collaboration which aims to find genes responsible for causing endometriosis. Initially, we were recruiting families with two or more affected members. More recently, we began recruiting women with surgically confirmed endometriosis whether they had affected relatives or not. We are now no longer asking for new participants because of the extraordinarily good response that we have had. In the future, however, we may restart recruitment and it would be worthwhile revisiting this site late this year to receive up-to-date news about the study.
On 4th April 2004, Stephen Kennedy ran his first marathon in Paris, in a time of 3.53.19, to raise money for research in Oxford into certain types of ovarian cancer, which rarely are associated

Endometriosis
Endometriosis At A Glance What is endometriosis?
Endometriosis is a growth of cells similar to those that form the inside of the uterus (endometrial cells) outside of the uterus. Endometrial cells are the same cells that are shed each month during menstruation . When endometrial cells grow outside the uterus, endometriosis results. These cells attach themselves to tissue outside the uterus and are called endometriosis implants. The implants are most commonly found on the ovaries, the fallopian tubes, outer surfaces of the uterus or intestines, and on the surface lining of the pelvic cavity. They can also be found on the liver, vagina, old surgery scars, and even in the lung or brain. Endometrial implants are generally benign (not cancerous). Endometriosis affects women in their reproductive years. Endometriosis is estimated to affect over 1 million women (estimates range from 3% to 18% of women) in the United States. It is one of the leading causes of pelvic pain and reasons for laparoscopic surgery and

Information on endometriosis, laparoscopy, hysterectomy, cancer, infertility, surgery, menopause, and many other women's health issues. Surgical photographs are included in the site.
http://www.womenssurgerygroup.com/
The Women's Surgery Group was originally formed by 13 Gynecologic surgeons located around the world who have exceptional skill and experience in laparoscopic surgery for gynecologic conditions. These gynecologists have expertise in a wide variety of gynecologic surgical procedures, ranging from reconstructive pelvic surgery for infertility to gynecologic cancer operations. This also includes virtually every gynecologic surgical procedure performed today. Collectively, the group has performed over 70,000 laparoscopic procedures and taught these techniques to thousands of gynecologists around the world. Every day, thousands of women undergo gynecologic surgery. Few have a clear understanding of their condition or the procedure itself. Many are unaware that their condition might be treated without surgery. If surgery is required, it can often be performed using laparoscopic techniques, leading to significantly shorter and more comfortable recovery. Most of these operations can be accomplished during outpatient or overnight stays. The physicians of the Women's Surgery Group have developed this site to inform and educate those with interests in women's health. Since beginning the site in 1997, we have continued to expand its content and scope. We hope you find the information helpful and informative.

This is a section through an enlarnged 12 cm ovary to demonstrate a cystic cavity filled with old blood typical for endometriosis with formation of an endometriotic, or "chocolate", cyst. The hemorrhage from endometriosis into the ovary may give rise to a large "chocolate cyst" so named because the old blood in the cystic space formed by the hemorrhage is broken down to produce much hemosiderin and a brown to black color.

When endometrial glands and stroma are found outside the uterus, the condition is known as endometriosis. Up to 10% of women may have this condition. It can be very disabling and painful, even when just a few foci are present. Diagrammed here are typical locations for foci of endometriosis. Sometimes the old dark brown blood collects over time from repeated hemorrhage in a cystic space in the ovary and produces a so-called "chocolate cyst".
