Unfortunately, in 1988, what was historically known both as myalgic encephalomyelitis and as the well-documented epidemic neuromyasthenia was renamed “Chronic Fatigue Syndrome” by employees at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), who imposed the misleading “fatigue” term onto patients and researchers. In 1994, more damage was done when the CDC broadened the definition for CFS to include many diverse, unrelated diseases, for which “CFS” became an umbrella term. Currently, a government-appointed name-change workgroup has proposed a new umbrella term, Neuroendocrineimmune Dysfunction Syndrome (NDS ), under which Ramsay, Canadian, and other selection criteria subsets would be placed. Others have argued that the muscle and neuroendocrine dysfunction may follow from inadequate oxygen delivery to tissues, either from coagulopathy, blood viscosity, and deposits of fibrin; or blood with high values of red cells with altered margins – or both. When the capacity of cells to take up and release oxygen is impaired, the body shifts to anaerobic metabolism, wherein incomplete metabolism of glycogen leads to the formation of lactic acid, which further impairs oxygen delivery. Brain, nerves, heart, skeletal muscles, and endocrine glands have higher requirements for oxygen and nutrient substrates, require more energy, and react to deficiencies with more serious consequences.

    to recommence my life
Hi, my name is Amanda James In 1997 I developed ME, a condition which is now also commonly called Post Viral Syndrome and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Whatever you call the condition, it can have far reaching effects on your physical and mental health, rendering the sufferer incapable of doing normal things without feeling exhausted and ill.
Do you wonder where your old self has gone?
Do you suffer from constant aches and pains?
Do you want to stop feeling tired, emotional and full of aches and pains? Most people do Through a twist of fate I was introduced to a school of thought on the subject which completely changed the way I perceived my condition and very soon impacted very positively indeed on the way I felt, my levels of energy and my ultimate return to normal routines. Let Me Show You How You Can Heal yourself with your diet If you have got ME you know about it – you may not know what it is, but you know there is something wrong.

AYME (pronounced ‘aim’) was founded in 1995 and is now the largest national charity for children and young people with ME aged 5 to 25. We provide support, advice and information to young people with ME and their families and friends. We help break the isolation that children and young people with ME feel, and make sure their voice is heard at all levels. We have won awards for our services to members and our volunteering opportunities. Our philosophy is that we are a young people’s organisation run by the members for the members. Over 300 AYMErs of all ages and abilities take an active part in running the organisation – including designing this website – building-up their skills, confidence and self-esteem. AYME is free to join for sufferers between the ages of 5 and 25 and who live in the UK. Click here for the top ten reasons why our members say all young people with ME should join:

Myalgic encephalomyelitis or chronic fatigue syndrome has only been recognised by doctors in recent years, after originally being dismissed as 'yuppie flu'. The first symptoms are , in fact, often similar to flu, but they do not go away and, in many cases, may become worse. Some experts remain to be convinced of its existence as a discrete illness, mainly because no one cause has been identified and symptoms often vary for different patients. What are the symptoms?
The main symptoms are debilitating fatigue, muscle pain, and mental fogginess. The cause of chronic fatigue cannot be explained by other conditions, such as depression, and it does not improve substantially after periods of rest. Some patients also have difficulty in concentrating, short-term memory impairment, sore throats, headaches and insomnia. Some people have such severe symptoms that they are confined to bed while others only suffer fatigue when they come up against stressful situations. What causes ME?

    http://www.mult-sclerosis.org/experimentalautoimmuneencephalomyelitis.html
Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis (EAE), also called Experimental Allergic Encephalomyelitis, is an animal model of Multiple Sclerosis. Animal models of human diseases are diseases of non-human species (often rodents) which closely resemble their human counterparts and are be studied with a view to better understanding and treating the human form. EAE is not multiple sclerosis, nor is it a single disease in a single species, but its different forms resemble the various forms and stages of MS very closely in a large number of ways. EAE is an acute or chronic-relapsing, acquired, inflammatory and demyelinating autoimmune disease. The animals are injected with the whole or parts of various proteins that make up myelin , the insulating sheath that surrounds nerve cells (neurons) . These proteins induce an autoimmune response in the animals - that is the animal's immune system mounts an attack on its own myelin as a result of exposure to the injection. The animals develop a disease process that closely resembles MS in humans. EAE has been induced in a number of different animal species including mice, rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, macaques, rhesus monkeys and marmosets. For various reasons including the number of

Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis (ADE) Overview Demyelinating disorder of the CNS that seems to be immune mediated. Pathogenesis is not known. Virus usually is not isolated from the nervous system, an allergic or autoimmune reaction is most likely. Usually preceded by a viral syndrome or vaccinations. Usually monophasic, but recurrent episodes may occur. Diseases that may trigger the demyelination: measles, rubella, Varicella-zoster, smallpox, mumps, influenza, parainfluenza, infectious mononucleosis, typhoid, mycoplasma infections, upper respiratory and other febrile disease vaccination against measles, mumps, rubella, influenza, and rabies. Most common overall cause: Nonspecific upper respiratory infections and Varicella infections. Pathology No change occurs in the external appearance of the brain or spinal cord. Loss of myelin, with relative sparing of the axon. Microscopic: perivenular lymphocytic and mononuclear cell infiltration and demyelination.

    The Illness
Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis (ADEM) This paper was prepared by Dr Clive Hawkins Consultant Neurologist / Senior Lecturer Royal Infirmary, Stoke on Trent Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) accounts for up to one third of all known cases of encephalitis. This illness usually follows in the wake of exanthema or after other viral infections or immunisations. There is usually a latent period of days to two to three weeks. This illness was first described 250 years ago by the distinguished English physician, Clifton who noted that it occurred occasionally in patients who had smallpox. The white matter of the brain is predominantly affected and under the microscope it can be seen that there is invasion around small veins by white blood cells from the blood. Where these cells accumulate myelin is destroyed. The illness has been poorly understood and a variety of terminologies used to describe it, these including post infectious, parainfectious or post vaccinial. Clinical Presentation Investigations The cerebrospinal fluid is frequently abnormal showing an increase in white cells and protein. The electroencephalogram is abnormal in most cases showing diffuse slowing. Magnetic resonance imaging typically shows multiple areas of abnormality in the white matter of the brain.

General Discussion Myalgic Encephalomyelitis is thought to be an infectious disorder affecting the central, peripheral and autonomic nervous systems and the muscles. Major symptoms may include general exhaustion, headache, muscle pain, weakness, and possible mental changes. The exact cause of this disorder is not known, but researchers believe a virus associated with an immune system abnormality may be responsible. Adults are most commonly affected, with more cases seen in females than in males. Epidemics of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis have occurred worldwide, but cases tend to appear sporadically. Symptoms can resolve in a few weeks but may recur at any time. Other cases may persist for many years.
