Study finds removing part of lungs helps some emphysema patients
(AP) A risky surgery to remove part of the damaged lungs of emphysema patients appears to at least temporarily improve their ability to breathe, walk and lead more normal lives, a small study found. While a few thousand people with severe emphysema have had the operation and reported substantial improvement, Medicare and private insurers won't pay for it without proof it works better than standard medical care.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
What Are Chronic Bronchitis and Emphysema?
Chronic bronchitis, one of the two major diseases of the lung grouped under COPD, is diagnosed when a patient has excessive airway mucus secretion leading to a persistent, productive cough. An individual is considered to have chronic bronchitis if cough and sputum are present on most days for a minimum of 3 months for at least 2 successive years or for 6 months during 1 year. In chronic bronchitis, there also may be narrowing of the large and small airways making it more difficult to move air in and out of the lungs. An estimated 12.1 million Americans have chronic bronchitis. People with familial emphysema have a hereditary deficiency of a blood component called alpha-1-antitrypsin resulting in the loss of a lung structural protein, elastin. In emphysema there is permanent destruction of the alveoli, the tiny elastic air sacs of the lung, because of irreversible destruction of a protein in the lung called elastin that is important for maintaining the strength of the alveolar walls. The loss of elastin also causes collapse or narrowing of the smallest air passages, called bronchioles, which in turn limits airflow out of the lung. The number of individuals with emphysema in the United States is estimated to be 2 million. In the general population, emphysema usually develops in older individuals with a long smoking history. However, there is also a form of emphysema that runs in families. People with familial emphysema have a hereditary deficiency of a blood component, alpha-l-protease inhibitor, also called alpha-l-antitrypsin (AAT). The number of Americans with this genetic deficiency is quite small, probably no more than 70,000. It is estimated that 1 in 3,000 newborns have a genetic deficiency of AAT, and 1 to 3 percent of all cases of emphysema are due to AAT deficiency.

Casper attorney chose his own 'final exit' By MATTHEW VAN DUSEN Star-Tribune staff writer For years, Jim Fagan talked to friends and family about choosing the time and means of his own death. The Casper attorney believed both politically and personally in an individual's right to die, family members say, and on Wednesday morning, he took his own life.
"He believed that this was one of those things that people had the right to do," said Lita Fagan, Jim's ex-wife.
Fagan, who was 76, suffered from emphysema, a progressive lung disease that causes breathlessness, and also had artificial hips that prevented him from walking. Lita Fagan said his quality of life had decreased considerably and he did not want to go to a nursing home.
He talked to his family at length about the decision and toward the end of his life, Lita Fagan recalled, "He said, 'I want out. I want out.'"

Now red wine can help the lungs
Heather Catchpole ABC Science Online
Wednesday, 29 October 2003
Chemicals in red wine could be the next treatment for chronic lung disease. Faquier County, Virginia Trawling the wine cellar for potential cures for human ailments in the same way we search tropical rainforests and oceans for useful drugs has yielded a new treatment for chronic lung disease.
Researchers from Imperial College, London have reported in the British Medical Journal that resveratrol, a component of red wine, has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that can help treat a common type of lung disease.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is an irreversible condition where the lungs progressively deteriorate, making it difficult to breathe. The term is used to describe the airflow obstruction that is associated mainly with emphysema and chronic bronchitis.
The major risk factor for COPD is smoking and the only way to slow the disease is to stop smoking, use asthma medication and get some good old fashioned exercise.
Now researchers have found that resveratrol, a polyphenol antioxidant found in the skins of red fruits such as grapes, may suppress the disease.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
Emphysema is one of the lung disorders classified as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In emphysema, damage to the air sacs in the lungs reduces their ability to pick up oxygen from the air we breathe.
Causes
Cigarette smoking is the leading cause. Others are air pollution, allergies, and infections. Dust or chemical-filled air at work can cause emphysema. The disease becomes more likely as we get older.
Signs/Symptoms
The most common symptom is gradually increasing difficulty in breathing that grows worse over a period of many years. Finally, breathing becomes difficult even when you're resting. You may also cough up small amounts of sputum or have swelling in your feet and hands. People with emphysema tend to have very pink skin, to be thin, and have a barrel-shaped chest.
Care
Treatment is aimed at helping you breathe more easily. If the problem is severe, you may need a stay in the hospital, where you can get oxygen, breathing treatments, and medicine.
