Welcome to the Eczema Mailing List The Eczema Mailing List is an automated mailing list which allows people with eczema to share their experiences of living with and managing eczema. The list is also open to people such as parents of children with eczema and people with a professional interest in eczema. It is not open to those with a commercial interest in Eczema or people wishing to advertise products or services. The discussion on the list varies from people sharing their own experiences of orthodox and alternative treatments to people discussing the emotional and social aspects of eczema. The list works rather like a USENET news group or a CompuServe forum. The difference is that you send and receive all the messages by e-mail. Postings to the list can only be read by subscribers. Subscription is free and you can unsubscribe at any time. Find out more by clicking on the links at the left. Is eczema caused by an allergy?

Eczema is a group of skin complaints that can affect all age groups and can occur anywhere on the body. It is an inflammatory response of the skin to a variety of external or internal influences. These may act individually or there may be a number of them causing the problem. The terms dermatitis and eczema are synonymous and do not refer to two different conditions. The terms are interchangeable. Eczema is named from a Greek word that means 'to boil'. The term dermatitis means inflammation of the skin. It is estimated that about one in 10 people are affected by eczema at some point in their lives. Eczema can be very difficult and sometimes even miserable for sufferers. Many types of eczema cannot be cured but they can be controlled. A good knowledge of the condition combined with a willingness to develop daily skincare routines or take prevention measures is the key to controlling eczema.

of eczema

One of the common reasons for eczema to become more severe is a bacterial infection. A bacterium called Staphylococcus aureus is the main culprit, although other kinds of infection are not unknown. Staph. aureus is present on the skin of people with eczema (even when the skin is not particularly inflamed) in much greater concentration than it is found on skin without eczema. A minority of people with eczema suffer from frequent relapses. Their complaint responds well to antibiotic treatment, but gets worse when the antibiotics are stopped. In many of these people, Staph aureus works to 'switch on' the eczema.

FDA APPROVES NEW TREATMENT FOR ECZEMA
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today approved a new treatment for atopic dermatitis (eczema) - a non-contagious skin condition that can cause redness, itching and oozing lesions. The drug is Protopic (tacrolimus) Ointment (0.1% and 0.03% for adults and 0.03% for children 2 years and older). The drug is for patients with moderate to severe eczema, for whom standard eczema therapies are deemed inadvisable because of potential risks, or who are not adequately treated by or who are intolerant of standard eczema therapies. FDA based its approval on the results of three 12- week studies which indicated that 28-37% of patients using Protopic experienced greater than or equal to 90% improvement of their skin condition, as measured by physicians, and two one year studies that indicated that the drug is safe for intermittent long term use. Common side effects associated with this drug include temporary stinging or burning sensations where the drug is applied, which may lessen if the diseased skin heals. There was evidence from an animal study that Protopic Ointment may accentuate the adverse effects of ultraviolet light on the skin. Therefore, it is important that patients avoid sunlight and sun lamps, tanning beds, and treatment with UVA or UVB light. Patients who need to be outdoors after applying Protopic should wear loose fitting clothing that protects the treated area from the sun. In addition, patients should ask their health care providers what other type of protection from the sun to use.

    Definition
A generic term for acute or chronic inflammatory conditions of the skin, typically erythematous, edematous, papular, vesicular, and crusting; followed often by lichenifications and scaling, occasionally by duskiness of the erythema, and infrequently hyperpigmentation; often accompanied by sensations of itching and burning.
    Causes
Allergies , herpesvirus type 1, vascular stasis. Most causes of eczema is unknown. Food allergies play a large part in most instances. Frequently eggs, wheat cereals, milk and certain fruits or berries. Lack of sunshine, fresh air, and constipation may be contributing factors.
    Symptoms
Eczema may occur at any age but most frequently in infants. Most commonly on the face, but can appear on other parts of the body. It causes severe itching, burning, and stinging of the skin. Sometimes it begins with pimple like rash which develops into larger blisters filled with water. Usually the skin dries up and forms little scales that itch intensely. There are two kinds of eczema, dry and moist or weeping eczema. Both forms are usually worse during the winter months.
    Treatment
Select alkaline foods. Bowels should be regular. Do not use soap and water for cleansing the skin; instead, use a weak boric acid solution. Using a salt solution of one tsp. to a quart of water is also helpful. Take equal parts of burdock root, yellow dock, yarrow, and marshmallow; using a heaping tsp. of this mixture of granulated herbs to a cup of boiling water, steep, strain, and drink

Fact: Skin infections more common if your have eczema
50% of people with atopic eczema develop staph aureus colinization (skin infections)whilst less than 5% of people with normal skin will develop staph aureus colinization.
This emphasises the importance of good hygeine and skin care amongst those with atopic eczema.

Monday, May 31, 2004 Flashback: Psoriasis and Arsenic I have been reading my mother's 1959 "Diseases of the Skin" book again. I was amazed to discover that: 'arsenic is generally ineffective in treating psoriasis and carcinoma sometimes follows its continued use'. It is not that the arsenic proved detrimental to these people that I found amazing but the fact that they tried it in the first place.
