The Allergy Guide - Allergic Conditions
Eczemas Atopic dermatitis Contact dermatitis What are the symptoms? How to diagnose the cause? ... What can be done to prevent eczema? Eczema is a group of conditions that affect the skin. The two most common forms are 'atopic dermatitis' and 'contact dermatitis'. Atopic dermatitis Atopic dermatitis (also called atopic eczema or infantile eczema) occurs in people with dry and rough skin ( keratosis pilaris ) and may be caused by a variety of allergens. It often starts in childhood and tends to run in families. Possible causes of atopic dermatitis:
  • Food allergy plays an important role in small children but not in adults. Cow's milk and hen's egg are the foods most likely to exacerbate infantile eczema
  • The house dust mite is the more common allergen in older children and adults while allergy to cats and dogs may also be responsible.
  • Certain bacteria such as staphylococci may cause sudden severe outbreaks of eczema.

Summary: I suffered from severe eczema with painful swelling and oozing of the skin, bleeding cracks, severe scaling, itching and burning. When I sweated, it felt as if acid was poured all over me. I suffered miserably for 49 years from this horrible disease which totally debilitated me. No creams, potions, salves, or anything else cured my condition. It wasn't until I turned 50 that I finally discovered how to heal this terrible condition by igniting my own internal healing force. Ironically in the process of curing my eczema my overall health and vitality improved dramatically. If you expect to find a magic bullet cure here, you'll be disapointed. In a nutshell, I credit my healing to homeopathy, natural rawfood diet, special oils, uropathy, and herbal remedies.

Revised: April 2003 Handout on Health: Atopic Dermatitis This booklet is for people who have atopic dermatitis (often called "eczema"), parents and caregivers of children with atopic dermatitis, and others interested in learning more about the disease. The booklet describes the disease and its symptoms and contains information about diagnosis and treatment as well as current research efforts supported by the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) and other components of the Department of Health and Human Services' National Institutes of Health (NIH). It also discusses issues such as skin care and quality of life for people with atopic dermatitis. If you have further questions after reading this booklet, you may wish to discuss them with your doctor or your child's pediatrician. Defining Atopic Dermatitis Atopic dermatitis is a chronic (long-lasting) disease that affects the skin. It is not contagious; it cannot be passed from one person to another. The word "dermatitis" means inflammation of the skin. "Atopic" refers to a group of diseases where there is often an inherited tendency to develop other allergic conditions, such as asthma and hay fever. In atopic dermatitis, the skin becomes extremely itchy. Scratching leads to redness, swelling, cracking, "weeping" clear fluid, and finally, crusting and scaling. In most cases, there are periods of time when the disease is worse (called exacerbations or flares) followed by periods when the skin improves or clears up entirely (called remissions). As some children with atopic dermatitis grow older, their skin disease improves or disappears altogether, although their skin often remains dry and easily irritated. In others, atopic dermatitis continues to be a significant problem in adulthood.

Linoleic acid (LA), part of the n-6 EFA series, is derived from food and subsequently converted into gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) and longer-chain polyenes (LCPs) such as dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid (DGLA) and arachidonic acid (AA). Although LCPs of the n-3 EFA series can be derived from alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), the major source of n-3 LCPs is food. Studies have found higher concentrations of LA and lower concentrations of LCPs in the blood of patients with atopic dermatitis (eczema). Additionally, newborns with a family history of atopic disease have been found to have lower concentrations of n-6 LCP in umbilical cord blood prior to developing atopic disease (AD).

Atopic dermatitis (atopic eczema or just eczema) is a name given to a stubborn itchy rash that occurs in certain people with sensitive or irritable skin.
http://www.skinsite.com/info_atopic_dermatitis.htm
Atopic Dermatitis I. Definition: Atopic dermatitis (atopic eczema or just eczema) is a name given to a stubborn itchy rash that occurs in certain people with sensitive or irritable skin. Eczema is common in infants and young children, and may disappear before adulthood. Eczema may clear for years, only to reappear lateroften on the hands. II. Cause:
  • The cause is unknown. It's the result of a built-in defect of the skin that tends to run in families. This defect causes the skin to lose water and to become dry compared to normal skin. Eczema is not contagious and is not related to your general health. People with eczema have skin that is dry and easily irritated by soap, detergents, and rough wool clothing. Clothes washed or dried with liquid or sheet fabric softeners such as Cling, may also irritate the skin. Hot and cold weather often aggravates eczema. Certain allergies may worsen eczema, but they don't cause it. People with atopic eczema have a greater incidence of asthma and hayfever in themselves and in their families.

135. Hand Dermatitis Hand Eczema
Hand dermatitis (hand eczema) is common. Hand rashes Hand Dermatitis. I. Definition Hand dermatitis (hand eczema) is common. Hand rashes
http://www.skinsite.com/info_hand_dermatitis.htm
Hand Dermatitis I. Definition: Hand dermatitis (hand eczema) is common. Hand rashes usually result from a combination of sensitive skin and irritation or an allergic reaction from materials touched. People with hand dermatitis often have dermatitis elsewhere, and frequently blood relatives have hand dermatitis. II. Causes:
  • We all have a natural protective film of oil on our skin. If this film is removed by soaps, detergents, chemicals, or other substances, the skin can become dry and cracked. Further exposure to environmental irritants then causes redness and inflammation. Some people are genetically predisposed to hand dermatitis. If you are one of these individuals, then it takes less environmental insult to cause hand dermatitis compared to someone who is not genetically pre-disposed. Hand dermatitis (hand eczema) is not contagious.
III. Treatment
  • Skin protection is an important part of treatment. Protect your hands from direct contact with soaps, detergents, scouring powders, and similar irritating chemicals by wearing waterproof, cotton lined, gloves. Wear waterproof gloves while peeling and squeezing lemons, oranges, or grapefruit, peeling potatoes, and handling tomatoes.

ECZEMA
INTRODUCTION Eczema affects one in five adults in the United Kingdom and up to one fifth of children. The term eczema is not a blanket term that can be used for all forms of eczema as their as many types of eczema. In a mild form the skin appears dry, and itchy. In sever forms, the skin may bleed. The cause of eczema depends on the clinical diagnosis of the type of eczema. It is imperative that the type of eczema is diagnosed before an effective treatment plan can be implemented. FORMS OF ECZEMA Listed below are the five main types of eczema that affect the feet and legs. Atopic Eczema This is the most common form of eczema. The skin often appears extremely dry, red and inflamed. The patient may also complain of severe itchiness. Scratching the skin may cause the skin to split, leaving it susceptible to infection. If the eczema is infected, the skin may crack and weep. Atopic eczema is linked with hereditary factors, asthma and hayfever. Patients may also have a sensitive reaction to certain types of allergens in the environment, which may lead to the occurrence of atopic eczema. Treatments include different types of emollients and steroids to reduce the inflammation. Discoid Eczema This form of eczema commonly appears in adults and can affect the legs and the feet. Discoid eczema appears as small round shaped lesions that can be very itchy and may weep fluid. Treatments include different types of emollients and steroids to reduce the inflammation.
