COPING WITH ECZEMA: COMMON QUESTIONS
by Doctor John Harper MD FRCP, Consultant in Paediatric Dermatology Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, NHS Trust, London WC1 3JH PREFACE
The purpose of this information is to answer those questions which are most commonly asked by parents of children with eczema. I hope that this information is useful and that these suggestions will benefit your child. Regular daily skin care is essential. It is important to remember that the long-term outlook is usually excellent. WHAT IS ECZEMA?
The word eczema comes from the ancient Greek meaning "to boil over". It is used to describe an inflammation of the skin, which causes redness and intense itching. The most common type of eczema in children is atopic eczema , which may be associated with asthma or hayfever. The terms 'atopic eczema' and 'atopic dermatitis' mean the same thing and should not be confused. WHY DOES MY CHILD HAVE ECZEMA?
Atopic eczema is essentially a genetic disorder. Often there is someone else in the family with eczema, asthma or hayfever, but this not always the case. There are many external factors which may influence eczema on a day to day basis. These are discussed in more detail later on. WILL MY CHILD GROW OUT OF ECZEMA?

Atopic Dermatitis
(Eczema)
What is atopic dermatitis?
Atopic dermatitis is a chronic (long-lasting) disease that affects the skin. The word "dermatitis" means inflammation of the skin. "Atopic" refers to diseases that are hereditary, tend to run in families, and often occur together. These diseases include asthma hay fever , and atopic dermatitis. In atopic dermatitis, the skin becomes extremely itchy and inflamed, causing redness, swelling, cracking, weeping, crusting, and scaling. Atopic dermatitis most often affects infants and young children, but it can continue into adulthood or first show up later in life. In most cases, there are periods of time when the disease is worse, called exacerbations or flares, which are followed by periods when the skin improves or clears up entirely, called remissions. Many children with atopic dermatitis enter into a permanent remission of the disease when they get older, although their skin often remains dry and easily irritated. Environmental factors can activate symptoms of atopic dermatitis at any time in the lives of individuals who have inherited the atopic disease trait. What is the difference between atopic dermatitis and eczema?

      General Description
Eczema, or dermatitis as it is sometimes called, is a group of skin conditions which can affect all age groups. Up to one fifth of all children of school age have eczema, along with about one in twelve of the adult population. The severity of the disease can vary. In mild forms the skin is dry, hot and itchy, whilst in more severe forms the skin can become broken, raw and bleeding. Although it can sometimes look unpleasant, eczema is not contagious. With treatment the inflammation of eczema can be reduced, though the skin will always be sensitive to flare-ups and need extra care. There are no guarantees that a child will grow out of eczema. However, research has shown that 60-70% of children are virtually clear of the condition by the time they reach their mid-teens.

There are several different types of eczema, many of which look similar but have very different causes and treatments. The first step in effective treatment of eczema is a correct diagnosis. It is very important to see a general practitioner in the first instance, who may make a referral to a specialist dermatologist for further diagnosis and treatment.

      General Psoriasis Information
Psoriasis is a chronic skin disorder that affects over 6.4 million people in the United States. Plaque psoriasis, the most common form, is characterized by inflamed lesions topped with silvery white scales. Psoriasis can be limited to a few plaques or can involve moderate to extensive areas of skin. For most people, psoriasis tends to be mild. Psoriasis may appear as patches of silvery scales or red areas on legs, knees, arms, elbows, scalp, ears, and back. The toes and fingernails lose their luster and develop ridges and pits. Often hereditary, it is linked to a rapid growth of cells in the skin's outer layer. It may result from a faulty utilization of fat. Psoriaisis is most common between the ages of fifteen and twenty-five, and is not infectious. Attacks can be triggered by nervous tension and stress, illness, surgery, cuts, poison ivy, several viral and bacterial infections, sunburn, or the drugs of lithium, chloroquine, and beta-blockers., Only the scales and skin debris, which are quite itchy, can be removed. There is presently no known cure. the disease seems to lessen during the summer months. It may go away on its own, but once you have had psoriasis, it is always possible that it will return.

    http://www.familydoctor.co.uk/htdocs/eczema/eczema_specimen.html
Preview of Understanding Eczema What is eczema? T his short book is intended for those who want to know more about eczema, either because they have it themselves or because it affects a relative or friend for whom they are caring. Other types of eczema trouble us at different times of life for a number of reasons. For some, it is work related, whereas others develop a specific allergy to something to which they are exposed at home or work. And, as we get older, our skin becomes drier and thinner, which contributes to certain forms of eczema in old age. This book should help you understand some of the basic rules in eczema, how it arises, the principles of treatment and what kind of professional help is available. What is eczema? Eczema is usually dry, making your skin feel rough, scaly and sometimes thickened. In severe eczema or after a prolonged bout of scratching, the skin becomes wet with colourless fluid, sometimes mixed with blood. Itch Itch occurs with nearly all forms of eczema, varying from mild irritation to a hopelessly distracting and distressing symptom that makes life miserable for the sufferer and others involved. Redness Redness is usually present in ecze-ma and this redness can fluctuate, appearing bright red at some times of the day while at others it is barely noticeable. The redness is usually most obvious when you are hot or have exercised, or after a hot bath.
