Deadly Ebola outbreak likely to last for months
GENEVA, Switzerland (Reuters) The death toll from Ebola fever in northern Uganda rose to 60 on Tuesday and the outbreak is expected to continue for months, the World Health Organization said. The deaths in Uganda's Gulu province rose from 55 on Monday, and the number of cases reported also rose to 165 from Monday's 160, said Valery Abramov, a spokesman for the Geneva-based United Nations health agency.

Ebola outbreak 'not contained'
Ebola is spread through bodily fluids and has a two to 21-day incubation period. Story Tools BRAZZAVILLE, Republic of Congo (AP) U.N. health officials confirmed on Wednesday that a disease outbreak killing scores of people in the Republic of Congo was Ebola and warned that the highly lethal haemorrhagic fever could still be spreading. "We're not suggesting that this is over or even contained. We're treating it as an active outbreak," Iain Simpson, a World Health Organization (WHO) spokesman in Geneva, said. So far, 73 people have been infected, of whom 59 have died, according to WHO investigators. Government health officials in the tiny Central African nation report 80 cases with 67 deaths. The Cuvette West region, where the deaths have occurred, has been quarantined by the government since last week. Blood samples drawn from victims in the region tested positive for the Ebola virus, Josef Mboussa, a top official in Republic of Congo's health ministry, said. The disease is one of the world's deadliest, causing rapid death through massive blood loss in up to 90 percent of those infected.

Does importing primates push Ebola risk too high?
April 16, 1996
Web posted at: 10:30 p.m. EDT From Correspondent Jeff Levine WASHINGTON (CNN) Army scientists near Washington are studying blood samples from monkeys thought to carry the Ebola virus. If the tests are positive, it will mean the worst for the primates, now being housed at a Texas facility. "Basically, the animals are doomed. At this point, it's reasonable to assume all the animals have been exposed," said Dr. Peter Jahrling of the U.S. Army. The animals, imported from the Philippines, are infected with a strain of the Ebola virus known as Ebola Reston. Current evidence indicates that humans can't be sickened by Ebola Reston. During a 1989 outbreak of the strain at a primate facility in Reston, Virginia, four people were exposed, but didn't get sick. As in Texas, the monkeys in the Virginia outbreak all came from the same exporter. Scientists say Ebola Reston is transmitted through the air. The deadly Ebola Zaire, on the other hand, is spread through blood and other bodily fluids. An outbreak in Zaire last year killed 245 people. "We've been dealing with Ebola Reston for nearly seven years, and in the Ebola Restons we've seen, we do not see illness occur in humans," said Bob Howard, who works at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.

Ebola outbreak kills 18 in Congo
Story Tools BRAZZAVILLE, Congo (Reuters) An outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus has killed 18 people in northwestern Congo Republic, where the disease killed 120 earlier this year, state television said. HEALTH LIBRARY Health Library YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS Ebola virus Democratic Republic of Congo or Create your own Manage alerts What is this? One hundred and sixty-four people have come into contact with the disease around Mbomo, some 700 km (440 miles) northwest of the central African nation's capital Brazzaville and just across the border from Gabon, Tele-Congo said on Monday night. Teams from Congo Republic's health ministry, the World Health Organization and aid agency Medecins Sans Frontieres were in the Mbomo region trying to break the chain of contamination. There is no known cure for Ebola, which is passed on by infected body fluids and kills between 50 and 90 percent of victims depending on the strain. The disease damages blood vessels and can cause bleeding, diarrhea and shock. Its worst outbreak, in 1995, killed more than 250 people in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Ebola spreads from animals to hunters
Future outbreaks may be hard to predict, tests suggest.
16 January 2004 HELEN R. PILCHER Infected gorilla carcasses can spread Ebola to people who touch them. A genetic analysis of Ebola in central Africa has helped confirm that the disease can spread to people when hunters handle infecetd animal corpses. Eric Leroy at the International Centre for Medical Research in Franceville, Gabon, and colleagues, along with local villagers, noticed an increased number of large animal carcasses in the forest just before one Ebola outbreak in Gabon. When the researchers tested the corpses, most were found to be positive for the Ebola virus. The team then looked at the genetic sequences of viruses in both animal and human victims from five outbreaks that struck Gabon and the Republic of Congo over the past two years . They traced each outbreak from dead animals through to the first human victim and subsequent human victims. Their analysis suggests that the five outbreaks were caused by five distinct Ebola viral strains, rather than by one strain that mutated into different forms. That implies that a new outbreak could pop up anywhere at any time, says Leroy, making future outbreaks very difficult, if not impossible, to predict.

Fast vaccine offers hope in battle with Ebola
Similar vaccines could form part of future emergency strategy.
7 August 2003 This story is from the news section of the journal Nature Ebola outbreaks occur every few years in Africa. High-speed vaccines could help to contain unexpected outbreaks of disease, say US researchers who have developed a fast-acting vaccine against the deadly Ebola virus. The new vaccine, reported in this issue of Nature , gives macaque monkeys protection from Ebola infection only four weeks after a single jab. Previous Ebola vaccines took six months and multiple boosters to confer immunity. Should the vaccine prove safe and effective in humans, this would be fast enough to stop Ebola outbreaks, says lead author Gary Nabel, head of the Vaccine Research Center at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in Bethesda, Maryland. It could also form a template for developing emergency vaccines against unexpected outbreaks of disease, Nabel says. Most vaccines serve only as a preventive measure, because they take too long to produce immunity to be useful once an outbreak has begun. A notable exception is smallpox vaccine, which acts so quickly that it can sometimes stop the disease even after a person has been infected with the virus.
