42. Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever Facts
ebola Hemorrhagic Fever. To eliminate the risk, travelers should avoid areas where ebola outbreaks are occurring. What is ebola hemorrhagic fever?
http://www.astdhpphe.org/infect/ebola.html
Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever
  • Ebola hemorrhagic fever is caused by several Ebola viruses. The source of these viruses in nature is not known. People can get Ebola hemorrhagic fever by direct contact with virus-infected blood, body fluids, organs, or semen. There is no known cure or treatment. Recent outbreaks in humans have occurred in areas where medical supplies and care were inadequate. The outbreaks were controlled by using barrier nursing techniques. Under normal circumstances, travelers are at low risk of getting the disease. To eliminate the risk, travelers should avoid areas where Ebola outbreaks are occurring.
What is Ebola hemorrhagic fever Ebola hemorrhagic fever is one of the deadliest of a group of diseases called viral hemorrhagic fevers. They range in seriousness from relatively mild illnesses to severe and potentially fatal diseases. All forms of viral hemorrhagic fever begin with fever and muscle aches. Depending on the virus, the disease can get worse until the patient becomes very ill with breathing problems, severe bleeding (hemorrhage), kidney problems, and shock. Viral hemorrhagic fevers are caused by viruses from four families: filoviruses, arenaviruses, flaviviruses, and bunyaviruses. The usual hosts for most of these viruses are rodents or arthropods (such as ticks and mosquitoes). In some cases, the natural host for the virus is not known.

It causes shock and severe bleeding abnormalities. Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Ebola hemorrhagic fever (Ebola fever) is a viral disease that is limited to parts of Africa. It has been newsworthy worldwide because of its destructive potential. The exact mode of transmission is not understood. The incubation period appears to be up to 1 week, at which time the patient develops fatigue malaise , headache, backache, vomiting, and diarrhea. Within a week, a raised (papular) rash appears over the entire body. The rash is often hemorrhagic (contains blood). Hemorrhaging generally occurs from the gastrointestinal tract, causing the patient to bleed from both the mouth and rectum. Mortality is high, reaching 90%. Patients usually die from shock rather than blood loss.

Manage alerts What is this? WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. researchers said Tuesday they were starting testing on the first experimental vaccine against the Ebola virus in people. The virus, which kills anywhere between 50 and 90 percent of victims, is still rare but the most recent outbreak in Congo Republic has killed at least 11 people in a remote forest region. It is considered a threat because it is deadly, highly infectious and has no treatment. U.S. experts fear it could also be used as a biological weapon. The U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases will test the vaccine for safety in about two dozen volunteers. The vaccine, made by San Diego-based Vical Inc., has so far fully protected monkeys from the virus. It uses pieces of DNA from the virus to prime the immune system.

A new subtype was identified from a single human case in the Côte d'Ivoire in 1994, EBO-CI. Of around 1500 identified Ebola cases, two-thirds of the patients have died. The animal (or other) reservoir which sustains the virus between outbreaks has not been identified. Ebola Virus History Ebola-Zaire Ebola-Zaire, the first-discovered Ebola virus, is also the most deadly. At its worst, it has a ninety percent fatality rate. There have been more outbreaks of Ebola-Zaire than any other type of Ebola virus (³Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever²). The first outbreak took place in 1976 in Yambuku, Zaire (now Democratic Republic of Congo). Mabelo Lokela checked into the local hospital with a fever. One of the nurses assumed Lokela had malaria and gave him a quinine shot. When Lokela returned home from the hospital and died, the women of his family conducted a traditional African funeral for him. In preparation for this funeral, they removed all the blood and excreta from his body with their bare hands. Most of the women in his family died soon afterwards (Draper 19).

Lab tests rule out Ebola in Zimbabwe
Story Tools JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (AP) Laboratory tests have ruled out the possibility that an Angolan trader in Zimbabwe died of the feared Ebola virus, the U.N. health agency said Tuesday. Zimbabwe health authorities announced over the weekend that the man who died in the resort town of Victoria Falls on Dec. 25 had exhibited symptoms consistent with Ebola. The announcement touched off fears the highly contagious disease could spread from the continent's equatorial regions to southern Africa for the first time. But Dr. Welile Shashas, a spokesman for the World Health Organization, said the South African National Institute for Communicable Diseases tested samples sent by Zimbabwe and found it was not Ebola. "To the immense relief of everyone, this was not Ebola" or a similar hemorrhagic fever, he said. The actual cause of death remains to be determined. But confirmation that it was not Ebola has allowed emergency health teams gathered at Victoria Falls to lift quarantine restrictions imposed on staff who tended to the patient, Shashas said.

Ebola outbreak kills 29 in Africa
Story Tools GENEVA, Switzerland (AP) The fifth outbreak in two years of the deadly Ebola virus in a remote area of central Africa has so far killed 29 people, the U.N. health agency said Wednesday. Manage alerts What is this? But the outbreak appears to be coming under control, with no one currently sick in northwest Republic of Congo, said Dr. Pierre Formenty, a World Health Organization expert who has just returned from the region. WHO cannot declare the outbreak formally over until February, and there is still the danger that it could recur because animals in the area are still dying, Formenty said. The current outbreak is believed to have begun when four young hunters ate a wild boar they found dead in the forest. He said residents of the affected villages of Mbanza and Mbomo are beginning to trust the health workers more. In the past they had refused to give blood for testing, fearing that the health workers were using it for black magic and to spread the disease.

Ebola suspected in nine deaths in Congo Republic
Possible outbreak probed in region prone to disease
Story Tools BRAZZAVILLE, Republic of Congo (Reuters) Nine people have died in a suspected outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus in a remote forest region of the Congo Republic where 120 people died of the disease earlier this year, officials said Friday. YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS Ebola Republic of Congo World Health Organization (WHO) or Create your own Manage alerts What is this? Health Minister Alain Moka said the disease appeared to have broken out again near Mbomo, about 440 miles (700 kilometers) north of the central African nation's capital, Brazzaville, and just across the border from Gabon, in a region known as Cuvette-Ouest. "We just had a meeting about the resurgence of the Ebola virus in Cuvette-Ouest," he told reporters in Brazzaville. There is no known cure for Ebola, which is passed by infected body fluids and kills between 50 and 90 percent of its victims, depending on the strain. The disease damages the blood vessels and can cause bleeding, diarrhea and shock. "A group of hunters went into the forest and in spite of the advice given, they collected the meat of a dead boar ... Nine of them died. The only survivor is a young schoolboy who refused to touch the game," Moka said.

Researchers discover cause of bleeding in ebola
WASHINGTON (AP) Researchers have identified the portion of the Ebola virus that causes massive bleeding, the frightening hallmark of the deadly disease that has begun appearing periodically in Africa. Although Ebola is not common or widespread, it has received much attention since first being reported in 1976 because of the fear generated by the heavy bleeding and the disease's 90 percent death rate.
