Uganda finds Ebola case beyond outbreak center
Death toll now up to 80
From staff and wire reports KAMPALA, Uganda Health officials in Uganda said Wednesday they have confirmed a case of Ebola far from the northern district that has been the center of the deadly outbreak. This is the first time a case has been identified beyond the Gulu district, 225 miles (362 kilometers) north of the capital, Kampala, where the outbreak was identified last month. Sam Okware, director general for health services in the Ugandan Health Ministry, said tests confirmed that a soldier in the town of Mbarara, near the Tanzanian border, had died from the disease. The soldier, who had been stationed in Gulu before moving to Mbarara, died Friday. MESSAGE BOARD What can officials do to prevent outbreaks of deadly diseases like Ebola? INTERACTIVE Trace the history of the Ebola virus Okware said the Health Ministry was sending a team to Mbarara and had requested assistance from international agencies.

Health officials are investigating a new outbreak of the Ebola virus that has killed four people in Sudan.
A team from the World Health Organization (WHO) has traced the outbreak to Yambio, in the Western Equatorial region of south Sudan. There are 19 probable cases. About 120 people who came into contact with them are being kept under surveillance. A WHO spokesperson told the BBC the outbreak did not appear to be as virulent as previous ones. PAST MAJOR OUTBREAKS 1976 - southern Sudan, 117 deaths 1995 - Congo, 280 deaths 2000 - northern Uganda, 173 deaths 2002 - Congo, 100 deaths Despite earlier reports, it was not thought that a new strain of Ebola was involved. The Ebola virus in its early stages is hard to diagnose because some of the symptoms, like fever and joint pain, mimic malaria. Many people go on to develop internal bleeding, a characteristic typical of Ebola, and without medical attention the prospects are bleak.

Ebola has killed hundreds of people in central Africa
There are fears that birds could spread the deadly Ebola virus. The shell of the human pathogen is similar to viruses that attack birds, suggesting it could have jumped from birds to humans. It is possible that there is a bird host, possibly a migratory bird, and that is consistent with the epidemiology of the disease
David Sanders
If this is the case, Ebola could be being carried long distances on the wing, with obvious health implications. The theory has not been proven, but researchers say it should be borne in mind by health agencies. The warning comes from US researchers who have studied the biochemical structure of Ebola. Quarantined children during the 1995 outbreak David Sanders of Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, said biochemical analysis revealed the protein shell of Ebola was close to that of certain bird retroviruses.

Woman in Canada may have Ebola
February 6, 2001 Web posted at: 3:54 p.m. EST (2054 GMT) HAMILTON, Ontario (CNN) Health officials are working to determine if a woman who traveled from Africa and now is hospitalized in Canada is suffering from Ebola hemorrhagic fever in what would be the first known case in North America. Health Canada, the nation's health department, confirmed a laboratory in Winnipeg had received blood samples from the woman. The hospital where the woman is being is treated is testing for viral hemorrhagic fevers, including Ebola, a severe, often-fatal disease, according to a hospital spokeman. INTERACTIVE Trace the history of the Ebola virus Test results are expected by Thursday, possibly sooner, said Jeff Pender of Health Canada. Viral hemorrhagic fevers are spread through human excretions such as blood, semen, saliva and mucus, and are not as contagious as airborne illnesses.
