Eating Disorders
The most common eating disorders on college campuses are Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia. Persons with Anorexia Nervosa deliberately attempt to lose weight through self-starvation. Even though they may be extremely underweight, they see themselves as "fat", deny any problem with their eating habits, and will resist any efforts made to get them to eat or return to a more healthy weight. Persons with Bulimia engage in frequent, often daily binge eating in which they eat very large amounts of food, often in secret. They will then try to counteract the binge by purging, which may involve self-induced vomiting, use of laxatives, or prolonged fasting and exercise. Persons with Bulimia feel out of control in the cycle of bingeing and purging. Both of these disorders occur more frequently in young women, with Bulimia being the more common. It is estimated that one in twenty college-age women have an eating disorder. Both disorders may have serious medical consequences. While many persons with Anorexia Nervosa or Bulimia deny the problem and are reluctant to seek help, they often come to the attention of friends and family. A direct, caring, and nonjudgmental expression of concern about their health by friends and family is often a vital first step in enabling persons with eating disorders to seek appropriate treatment. Help is available in the form of individual psychotherapy, medical and nutritional counseling, and self-help support groups. With proper help, persons with an eating disorder can learn to stabilize their eating patterns, maintain a healthy weight, and become less preoccupied with food.

Each year millions of people in the United States are affected by serious and sometimes life-threatening eating disorders. The vast majoritymore than 90 percentof those afflicted with eating disorders are adolescent and young adult women. One reason that women in this age group are particularly vulnerable to eating disorders is their tendency to go on strict diets to achieve an "ideal" figure. Researchers have found that such stringent dieting can play a key role in triggering eating disorders. Approximately 1 percent of adolescent girls develop anorexia nervosa, a dangerous condition in which they can literally starve themselves to death. Another 2 to 3 percent of young women develop bulimia nervosa, a destructive pattern of excessive overeating followed by vomiting or other "purging" behaviors to control their weight. These eating disorders also occur in men and older women, but much less frequently. The consequences of eating disorders can be severe. For example, one in ten cases of anorexia nervosa leads to death from starvation, cardiac arrest, other medical complications, or suicide. Fortunately, increasing awareness of the dangers of eating disorders sparked by medical studies and extensive media coverage of the illness has led many people to seek help. Nevertheless, some people with eating disorders refuse to admit that they have a problem and do not get treatment. Family members and friends can help recognize the problem and encourage the person to seek treatment.

Eating Disorders
Eating Disorders
Eating is controlled by many factors, including appetite, food availability, family, peer, and cultural practices, and attempts at voluntary control. Dieting to a body weight leaner than needed for health is highly promoted by current fashion trends, sales campaigns for special foods, and in some activities and professions. Eating disorders involve serious disturbances in eating behavior, such as extreme and unhealthy reduction of food intake or severe overeating, as well as feelings of distress or extreme concern about body shape or weight. Researchers are investigating how and why initially voluntary behaviors, such as eating smaller or larger amounts of food than usual, at some point move beyond control in some people and develop into an eating disorder. Studies on the basic biology of appetite control and its alteration by prolonged overeating or starvation have uncovered enormous complexity, but in the long run have the potential to lead to new pharmacologic treatments for eating disorders. Eating disorders are not due to a failure of will or behavior; rather, they are real, treatable medical illnesses in which certain maladaptive patterns of eating take on a life of their own. The main types of eating disorders are anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. A third type, binge-eating disorder, has been suggested but has not yet been approved as a formal psychiatric diagnosis. Eating disorders frequently develop during adolescence or early adulthood, but some reports indicate their onset can occur during childhood or later in adulthood.

Ann Fuller, R.N.
Linda J. Ryan About Eating Disorders: Eating disorders are increasingly common. Nearly one in 100 young women suffer from anorexia nervosa and up to three percent have bulimia. This epidemic may arise in part from conflict between society's ideal of beauty as excessively thin and the reality that 30% of the population is above ideal weight. Although young women comprise the majority of people affected, eating disorders can occur in any age group. One in ten patients are male. Eating disorders have many causes. They may be triggered by stressful life events including a loss or trauma, relationship difficulties, physical illness or a life change such as entering one's teens, marriage or pregnancy. An eating disorder may develop in association with another psychological problem such as depressive illness, obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety or substance abuse. Some individuals may have a familial predisposition. Acknowledging you have an eating problem is difficult. Most people deny and hide it from others, experiencing it as a shameful secret. Disturbances in mood, thinking and behavior are common to all eating disorders and make life difficult and unrewarding. Medical complications are frequent, including osteoporosis, electrolyte imbalances, cardiac and gastrointestinal problems. Importantly, however, early diagnosis and treatment are associated with good outcomes, and even those chronically affected can benefit greatly from treatment.

Trilogy
The Spark of Life Trilogy may help save a loved one's life, or at the least, provide supporters a comforting calm by explaining all aspects of an effective new treatment for anorexia and bulimia sufferers. The author is a licensed counselor who spent 6 years guiding his soul mate toward a permanent spark of life through the pervasive dreary darkness of her severely incapacitating eating disorders. Read the amazing real life stories of how he helped his mate overcome the baffling bleakness of bulimia (book 1) over a few years and the absolute agony of severe anorexia (book 2) in a mere half year using his very own therapy (book 3). The third book provides an easily understood methodical explanation of how this dynamic new therapy was applied in the first book on bulimia and in the second on severe anorexia. The Trilogy is not a "war story" glorifying the horrors of eating disorders sufferers, but it is more a practical solution filled guide of what exactly should be done by those sufferers, their supporters, and therapists to effect the most affordable and longest lasting recovery possible. Amidst his prolonged assistance, the author was able to discover the
