s of the various eating disorders.......eating disorders. eating disorders are, unfortunately, very common today. The Basic Facts
http://www.uiowa.edu/~ucs/eatdis.html
Eating Disorders Eating disorders are, unfortunately, very common today. Most of us want to have healthy, well-functioning, and attractive bodies. However, our celebrity-smitten society places undue emphasis on the attractiveness part, and then tells us that to be attractive, we must be thin. Our normal desire to maintain a healthy body weight can become abnormal when we are constantly under peer and societal pressure to attain and maintain a weight and shape that is not natural for us. Eating disorders include extreme emotions, attitudes, and behaviors surrounding weight and food issues, and are experienced by both women and men. They include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder. All are serious emotional and physical problems that can have life-threatening consequences. Eating Disorders can occur at any age, but they most commonly begin during the teen years. Going away to college can almost be defined as a risk factor for developing an eating disorder in a young person who feels uncomfortable about his/her body and is not sure how s/he is going to 'fit in' and make new friends on campus. Are you concerned about your eating or food-related habits, or those of a friend? Most of us know something about eating disorders, but our information is often incomplete and inaccurate. The following will provide basic facts about eating disorders, what you can, and

A comprehensive program for clinicians. Treatment of mental illness requires mind-brain thinking. The dichotomy of mind and brain is now giving way to the beginnings of integration. Both pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy can help people with psychiatric disorders. But how are the clinical effects of chemical and psychotherapeutic treatments maximized? This book summarizes research in combined treatments, and discusses the manner in which each can aid the other.

Eating Disorders:
Myths and Campus Resources
Eating disorders are treatable conditions. Symptoms include a troubled relationship with food characterized by fasting, purging, and/or bingeing behaviors and recurring inappropriate compensatory behavior to reduce or control weight through excessive exercise, laxative misuse, and self-induced vomiting. Beyond food-related behaviors, people with eating disorders may display a wide range of cognitive and emotional problems, including an intense fear of gaining weight, distress over body size and shape, depression, moodiness, dichotomous thinking, low self- esteem, and perfectionism. Eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and many other unspecified types. It is important to see professionals, such as physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, counselors, and registered nutritionists for accurate diagnosis. Our society, with its obsession with thinness and obtaining the perfect body, has cultivated the development of eating disorders. Research studies found that 52% of adolescents begin dieting before age 14. Among college females, 78% reported bingeing experiences and 8.2% used self-induced vomiting to control weight. The following myths about eating disorders add to the problem and prevent individuals from getting treatment for this potentially life-threatening condition.

(AP) Intentional starvation, cookie binges, vomiting, hospitalization. The details were typical for an eating disorder. But Jeff Everts might not seem like a typical sufferer. In an era of diet fixation, chiseled underwear models and "a culture of muscularity," some researchers say eating problems among men are getting worse even as sufferers face a lingering stigma about having a "women's disorder." "We're able to hide it much better," said Everts, a 43-year-old Albuquerque, New Mexico, resident recovering from anorexia and bulimia. "We don't talk about it, where women would." Women are more likely to have eating disorders than men. But men can also suffer from bulimia, binge eating and, to a lesser extent, anorexia, according to researchers.

On the Teen Scene:
Eating Disorders Require Medical Attention
by Dixie Farley For reasons that are unclear, some peoplemainly young womendevelop potentially life-threatening eating disorders called bulimia nervosa and anorexia nervosa. People with bulimia, known as bulimics, indulge in bingeing (episodes of eating large amounts of food) and purging (getting rid of the food by vomiting or using laxatives). People with anorexia, whom doctors sometimes call anorectics, severely limit their food intake. About half of them also have bulimia symptoms. The National Center for Health Statistics estimates that about 9,000 people admitted to hospitals were diagnosed with bulimia in 1994, the latest year for which statistics are available, and about 8,000 were diagnosed with anorexia. Studies indicate that by their first year of college, 4.5 to 18 percent of women and 0.4 percent of men have a history of bulimia and that as many as 1 in 100 females between the ages of 12 and 18 have anorexia.
