Eating Disorders Document Quick Links:
The following provides information on Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia, the risks involved and ways to get help. Introduction
Due to cultural ideals of feminine beauty, young women feel a strong desire to be thinner than their bodies naturally tend to be. As a result, they change their eating patterns and they may develop eating disorders. The most common eating disorders are Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia. Both eating disorders are more common among young adults than at any other age. What is Anorexia Nervosa?
Anorexia Nervosa is a serious psychological and physiological disorder. Anorexia Nervosa has the following characteristics:
  • The anorexic restricts eating to the point of emaciation.
  • The anorexic may exercise constantly and take laxatives or diuretics to lose weight.
  • The most common ages of onset are 11 and 18, the beginning and ending of adolescence.
  • The disorder is mostly diagnosed in the upper middle class. However, both rich and poor can develop the disorder.

Hayley used to love going to the food court in the mall with her friends, but now just the thought of it fills her with dread. Besides, she doesn't really even have time to hang with her friends anymore since she's upped her exercise schedule to include even more running and aerobics. She doesn't feel like herself lately - she's having a hard time concentrating in school and she's always so tired. She's really thin, too - so how come every time Hayley passes a mirror, she sees an overweight girl staring back at her? If you know someone in your school who is like Hayley - or if you recognize yourself in her - you're not alone. Hayley has an eating disorder, a condition that occurs when a person tries to become thin in an unhealthy way. Eating disorders are very common in America - between 5 and 10 million people have them. In fact, it's thought that one in 10 college-age girls has some type of eating disorder. But eating disorders don't strike only girls in college; many girls in high school and even junior high (or middle school) have them, too. It's estimated that 1% of American teens has an eating disorder. That means if your class has 400 students, probably about four of them have this condition. Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa
The two most common types of eating disorders are anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa , more commonly known as anorexia and bulimia.

Self Injury and Eating Disorders
I have put this page on my site as it deals with the subject of self harm and eating disorders. These are some what tabooed topics and the more awareness there is the better. For those of you who read this and know about self harm/injury please make sure you are safe as reading this may be triggering.
"Self-injury is used to help the individual cope, the act of injuring oneself is also used to help cope with, block out, and release built up feelings and emotions. Self-injury is probably the most widely misunderstood forms of self harm and there are many myths associated with it, which can make it difficult for people to reach out and ask for help. Self-injury (self-harm, self-mutilation) can be defined as the attempt to deliberately cause harm to one's own body and the injury is usually severe enough to cause tissue damage. This is not a conscious attempt at suicide, though some people may see it that way. It has been reported that many people who self-injure have a history of sexual or physical abuse, but that is not always the case. Some may come from broken homes, alcoholic homes, have emotionally absent parents, etc. There are many factors that could cause someone to self-injure as a way to cope.

Parents
Recently, you've noticed your 15-year-old daughter just picking at her food. Your son jokes about her going on another diet, and her grandmother says, "You could use some meat on your bones." She looks down and screams that she ate a big lunch at school and is not hungry. When she gets up suddenly to leave, her baggy clothes, although stylish, look more oversized than usual. For the sixth night in a row, you hear vigorous jumping in her room, and think that she's been practicing her dance routine a lot lately. Although you want to just pass it off as a stage of adolescence , you are worried. She's been depressed for a while, and her weight concerns you. But when you try to talk to her about it, you cannot communicate. "You're too thin," you say, and she says, "I'm too fat." You're right to be concerned - according to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are eating disorders that are increasing among teens and kids, especially among young women.

Web Site Dedication
This web site is dedicated to the liver of life, the seeker of more, and to all of you who, like I, were wounded, have incurred many heart-wrenching losses, endured much pain and still search for a better, happier and more peaceful way. It is there for the finding. It must first be found from deep within yourself. Each one of us will identify a different, individual "happier" or more "peaceful". To look for something that we might think others have or "everyone else" has is to fool ourselves into suffering needlessly based upon cognitively distorted and unworthy comparisons. All you have to do, is follow your path on your journey in your life. For your way, is the right way for you. True to the reality of this web site, "Build it and they will come." As I continue to be blessed and humbled in my own life by my own capacity to heal, to learn, change and continue to grow more authentically me, day by day, it is an honour

118. Helen Harte House
A halfway house dedicated to women for the treatment of alcoholism, drug abuse, eating disorders, and depression. In Boynton Beach, FL.
http://www.helenhartehouse.net/pages/1/
The Helen Harte House is a recovery home for women located in Boynton Beach, Florida. Our beautiful, comfortable houses are just a bike's ride from the beach, shopping areas and restaurants and one mile from the local hospital. The decision to enter a recovery home is a difficult and confusing one. Dependency on alcohol and drugs is a life crisis for those that are addicted as well as family and friends. We support out women in taking that first step. We applaud their courage! As you know, chemical addiction is a progressive disease that will lead to mental and physical deterioration, and death. There is no cure, however, it is treatable. Our doors are also open to women suffering from other diseases such as eating disorders, depression, bi-polar illnes, etc. as long as they are under the care of a physician or therapist. As a "female only" focused house, we are sensitive to the specific needs of women and we provide the much needed resources to help these women with their emotional and social issues, as well as focusing on the issues surrounding their families and friends. As the saying goes, "getting sober is easy - staying sober is the hard part" and the first year of recovery is the most difficult. Research shows that long-term treatment is the best way to maximize any recovery effort and we feel very privileged to provide you with that much needed extended care.

Positive Youth Development
Positive Youth Development is a concept which recognizes that merely preventing problem behaviors is not all that is needed to prepare youth for the future. Or, in the often quoted words of Karen Pittman "problem free is not fully prepared." Additionally, evaluations of some positive youth development programs are showing that they can reduce problem behaviors. Volume 11(2) focuses on the topic of positive youth development and its real-world applications.
