An eating disorder is a disturbance in eating behavior. Anorexia nervosa (anorexia) and bulimia nervosa (bulimia) are the eating disorders that are studied most often, and researchers estimate that nearly 7 million women in the United States suffer from anorexia or bulimia. A newly-recognized condition known as binge-eating disorder is considered the most common eating disorder. In the United States, it occurs in 0.7% to 4% of the population, meaning that 1 to 4 out of every 100 people have the disorder. Eating disorders affect women more often than men, but approximately 1 million men in the United States suffer from anorexia or bulimia, and millions more have binge-eating disorder. Eating disorders are more prevalent in industrialized countries and according to the American Psychiatric Association, they are most common in the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, Japan, New Zealand, and South Africa.

How Does Someone Know if He or She Has Binge Eating Disorder? Most of us overeat from time to time, and many people often feel they've eaten more than they should have. Eating a lot of food does not always mean that a person has binge eating disorder. Doctors generally agree that most people with serious binge eating problems often
  • feel their eating is out of control
  • eat what most people would think is an unusually large amount of food
  • eat much more quickly than usual during binge episodes
  • eat until so full they are uncomfortable
  • eat large amounts of food, even when they are not really hungry
  • eat alone because they are embarrassed about the amount of food they eat
  • feel disgusted, depressed, or guilty after overeating.
Binge eating also takes place in another eating disorder called bulimia nervosa.

CBT Counselling
Counsellor and Therapist, Anne-Purchase Walker, Norwich, Norfolk What Is Cognitive Behaviour Therapy? Cognitive Behaviour Therapy or CBT, originated in America in the early 1950's, through the pioneering work of two psychologists; Aaron Beck and Albert Ellis. Although both psychologists emphasis slightly different aspects of their work, Aaron Beck preferring to stress the importance of challenging negative thinking, and Albert Ellis (who calls his approach Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy), preferring to stress the importance of disputing the inflexible and irrational rules of living that we call ' musts ' or 'shoulds', both are in agreement that errors in our thinking are a major cause of human unhappiness. They also agree that examining our feelings, or emotions, and our behaviour, as well as our thinking, often with the help of a skilled Cognitive Behaviour Therapist or counsellor, when we have a problem, can be very helpful. In fact, such examination is the key to solving the problem! How Problems Happen Why is this? Because in any situation, it is our thinking, our interpretation of events, that usually starts our problem, and our feelings and behaviour follow. A little like a horse and cart. Where the horse goes the cart has to follow! It looks like this:

What are Eating Disorders?
Eating disorders refers to a variety of disturbed eating behaviors, all associated with using food for emotional reasons. They range along a continuum from chronic dieting to compulsive overeating to cycles of binging and purging to self-starvation. While the frequency and severity of the problems differ, they all have in common turning to food as a way to cope with problems. Often, there is an underlying belief that being thinner would be a solution to troubles and demonstrate proof of control in one's life. Eating disorders are common among the college age population. The majority of individuals with eating disorders are women (about 90%) although men can also have eating disorders. Women are especially vulnerable to eating disorders because of the societal emphasis placed on appearance, external approval, and thinness as an ideal. The most frequent problem is chronic dieting (normative behavior among college women), followed by compulsive overeating, bulimia, and anorexia. The following descriptions of eating disorders focus on these four types, although keep in mind that not everyone fits a "type."

Body Acceptance and Eating Disorders:
An Information and Resource Guide
How do you feel about your body?
Chances are you probably don't think it's good enough. Too fat, too skinny, too big, too small, not muscular enough-bottom line, you're not happy with it. This mania may stem partly from a steady diet of TV and magazine images where bodies are always in "perfect shape". Though many of us acknowledge that we cannot achieve model "perfection" (after all, we don't have make-up artists, personal trainers, fashion designers, and professional photographers at our beck and call), we still behave like we can attain perfection, if only we'd try harder.
To what extent do you buy into it?
Do You... Try to eat zero grams of fat? Expect every inch of your body to be toned? Constantly compare yourself to others? Diet like crazy two weeks before spring break? Feel guilty after eating something high in fat? Weigh yourself one or more times a day?
The good news is that you can become happy with your body and yourself!

This questionand-answer fact sheet explains how psychotherapy can help people recover from eating disorders. What are the major kinds of eating disorders?
http://helping.apa.org/therapy/eating.html
Eating Disorders: Psychotherapy's Role in Effective Treatment
In a society that continues to prize thinness even as Americans become heavier than ever before, almost everyone worries about their weight at least occasionally. People with eating disorders take such concerns to extremes, developing abnormal eating habits that threaten their well-being and even their lives. This question-and-answer fact sheet explains how psychotherapy can help people recover from these increasingly common disorders.
What are the major kinds of eating disorders?

Why is it important to seek treatment for these disorders?
...
Does treatment really work?

What are the major kinds of eating disorders?

There are three major types of eating disorders.
  • People with anorexia nervosa have a distorted body image that causes them to see themselves as overweight even when they're dangerously thin. Often refusing to eat, exercising compulsively, and developing unusual habits such as refusing to eat in front of others, they lose large amounts of weight and may even starve to death.
  • Individuals with bulimia nervosa eat excessive quantities of food, then purge their bodies of the food and calories they fear by using laxatives, enemas, or diuretics, vomiting and/or exercising. Often acting in secrecy, they feel disgusted and ashamed as they binge, yet relieved of tension and negative emotions once their stomachs are empty again.
