Introduction
Message from the National Institute of Mental Health
Research conducted and supported by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) brings hope to millions of people who suffer from mental illness and to their families and friends. In many years of work with animals as well as human subjects, researchers have advanced our understanding of the brain and vastly expanded the capability of mental health professionals to diagnose, treat, and prevent mental and brain disorders. Now, in the 1990s, which the President and Congress have declared the "Decade of the Brain," we stand at the threshold of a new era in brain and behavioral sciences. Through research in animals and humans, we will learn even more about mental disorders such as depression, manic-depressive illness, schizophrenia, panic disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. And we will be able to use this knowledge to develop new therapies that can help more people overcome mental illness. The National Institute of Mental Health is a part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Federal Government's primary agency for biomedical and behavioral research. NIH is a component of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

T EENAGERS W ITH E ATING D ISORDERS No. 2 (10/92) (Updated 8/98) O vereating related to tension, poor nutritional habits and food fads are relatively common eating problems for youngsters. In addition, two psychiatric eating disorders, anorexia nervosa and bulimia, are on the increase among teenage girls and young women and often run in families. In the United States, as many as 10 in 100 young women suffer from an eating disorder. These two eating disorders also occur in boys, but much less often. The child and adolescent psychiatrist is trained to evaluate, diagnose, and treat these psychiatric disorders which are characterized by a preoccupation with food and a distortion of body image. Parents frequently ask how to identify symptoms of anorexia nervosa and bulimia. Unfortunately, many teenagers successfully hide these serious and sometimes fatal disorders from their families for many months or years. Parents should be on the lookout for various symptoms and warning signs of anorexia nervosa and bulimia:
  • A teenager with anorexia nervosa is typically a perfectionist and a high achiever in school. At the same time, she suffers from low self-esteem

Athealth.com is pleased to welcome Ellen Shuman, Director of the Acoria Eating Disorders Treatment Center in Cincinnati, and Dr. Sandy Matthews, a licensed psychologist at the Acoria Eating Disorders Treatment Center, who answer questions about emotional overeating and binge eating disorder
Athealth.com:
Tell us about your professional background.
Ms. Shuman: I entered the eating disorders treatment field through a rather non-traditional route. I was a journalist who had researched and produced several documentaries and news series on obesity and eating disorders. My interest in these subjects was motivated by my own struggles with body image, emotional eating and weight, and the impact each of those issues had had on my life.
In 1992, I saw an article in the New York Times about something new called "Binge Eating Disorder." I'd done a fair amount of research on anorexia and bulimia and compulsive overeating, but I'd never heard of binge eating disorder (BED). As I read the proposed diagnostic criteria for the disorder, I knew that this is what I had struggled with for 30 years.

Eating Disorders Anonymous (EDA) is a fellowship of individuals who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problems and help others to recover from their eating disorders. People can and do fully recover from having an eating disorder. In EDA, we help one another identify and claim milestones of recovery. The only requirement for membership is a desire to recover from an eating disorder. There are no dues or fees for EDA membership. We are self-supporting through our own contributions. EDA is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization or institution. EDA does not wish to engage in any controversy. We neither endorse nor oppose any causes. Our primary purpose is to recover from our eating disorders and to carry this message of recovery to others with eating disorders. In EDA, we try to focus on the solution, not the problem. Solutions have to do with recognizing life choices and making them responsibly. Diets and weight management techniques do not solve our thinking problems. EDA endorses sound nutrition and discourages any form of rigidity around food.
** Balance – not abstinence is our goal. **
