D yspareunia is genital pain experienced just before, during or after sexual intercourse. Although this condition has historically been classified as a sexual disorder, an integrated and pain-model approach to the problem is gaining support. The current thinking about pain initiation and promulgation suggests an initial instigating factor that is then perpetuated by confounding factors. These factors may be physical or psychologic. Patients with dyspareunia may complain of a well-defined and localized pain, or express a general disinterest in and dissatisfaction with intercourse that stems from the associated discomfort. Although dyspareunia is present in both sexes, it is far more common in women, with the pain initiating in several areas, from vulvar surfaces to deep pelvic structures. Patients with dyspareunia are more likely than the general public to report pain with use of a tampon or digit, or during a gynecologic examination.

June 02, 2004 EDT Dyspareunia is the clinical name for painful intercourse. This condition can occur at any age, in both sexes, and the pain can appear at the start of intercourse, midway through, at the time of orgasm, or after intercourse is completed. The pain can be felt as burning, sharp, searing or cramping. It can be external, within the vagina, or deep in the pelvic region or abdomen. Causes Are Multiple
The causes of dyspareunia, as with most sexual dysfunction, can be classified as either organic (physical or medical factors such as illness, injury or drug effects) or psychosocial (including psychological, interpersonal, environmental and cultural factors). The cause of a sexual dysfunction in a given person may be a combination of several factors, and in some cases, the precise cause may not be identifiable at all. Female dyspareunia can be caused by dozens of physical conditions. Any condition that results in poor vaginal lubrication can cause discomfort during intercourse. Among the more common culprits are drugs that have a drying effect (antihistamines, certain tranquilizers, marijuana) and disorders such as diabetes, vaginal infections, and estrogen deficiencies. Other causes of female dyspareunia include:
    • blisters, rashes and inflammation around the vaginal opening or the vulva

    Dyspareunia
Dyspareunia is described as pain felt by a woman in the genital region during or after sexual intercourse. Men may also experience pain during intercourse. Common causes include inflammation of the urethra ( Urethritis ) or prostate gland ( Prostatitis ). Other causes may include inflammation of the foreskin or infection. Treatment should be sought and may include the use of antibiotics. Cause - This condition may be caused by an infection or insufficient vaginal lubrication during sexual intercourse (due to a lack of sexual stimulation or foreplay, normal dryness accompanying menopause, or certain medications which dry body secretions). Other causes may include scarring from past surgery (including an episiotomy after childbirth) that has caused constrictions or adhesions, a Uterine Fibroid or Uterine Tumor Endometriosis , or an allergic reaction to contraceptive devices (foams, jelly, condoms). Some cases are thought to be psychologically based (i.e. fear of pregnancy, past sexual abuse). Diagnosis - Pain will be noticed during or after sexual intercourse. An evaluation by a physician should be sought to uncover the cause (i.e. infection, allergic reaction, etc.). The evaluation may include a gynecological examination, a Pap smear or laboratory culture of any vaginal secretions.

SF Bay Area sex therapists, gynecologist, and physical therapists explain sexual pain, dyspareunia, vulvodynia, and pelvic pain. What is dyspareunia?
    http://www.sexwithoutpain.com/dyspareunia.htm
    What is Dyspareunia
Dyspareunia is a broad term referring to any recurrent genital pain with sexual intercourse. When a woman experiences pain, a cycle can develop in which the anticipation of pain causes physical tension that maintains or increases pain. Then avoidance begins — the woman avoids sex to avoid the pain. Possible causes of dypsareunia include functional medical , and psychological conditions.
Functional Causes of Sexual Pain (Dyspareunia)
" Functional" means that there is nothing structurally wrong with the organs. Functional causes of sexual pain and discomfort are often easily understood and treated. For example, if a woman is not sexually aroused, she may lack adequate vaginal lubrication. This can cause friction or burning that is uncomfortable. Often this pain disappears after the woman becomes aroused and lubricated. It is usually an indicator that more sex play is needed before intercourse is started. Some women may find that use of a lubricant makes genital contact more pleasurable. Others may feel fully aroused and yet have inadequate amounts of natural lubrication.
