Definition
Dysmenorrhea is the occurrance of painful cramps during menstruation.
Description
More than half of all girls and women suffer from dysmenorrhea (cramps), a dull or throbbing pain that usually centers in the lower mid-abdomen, radiating toward the lower back or thighs. Menstruating women of any age can experience cramps. While the pain may be only mild for some women, others experience severe discomfort that can significantly interfere with everyday activities for several days each month.
Causes and symptoms
Dysmenorrhea is called "primary" when there is no specific abnormality, and "secondary" when the pain is caused by an underlying gynecological problem. It is believed that primary dysmenorrhea occurs when hormone-like substances called "prostaglandins" produced by uterine tissue trigger strong muscle contractions in the uterus during menstruation. However, the level of prostaglandins doesn't seem to have anything to do with how strong a woman's cramps are. Some women have high levels of prostaglandins and no cramps, whereas other women with low levels have severe cramps. This is why experts assume that cramps must also be related to other things (such as genetics, stress , and different body types) in addition to prostaglandins. The first year or two of a girl's periods are not usually very painful. However, once ovulation begins, the blood levels of the prostaglandins rise, leading to stronger contractions.

Key Diagnostic Points:
  • The pain in the lower abdomen appears with the menstrual cycle.
  • The pain can spread over the whole abdomen, the lumbo-sacral region, or there is dragging pain in the vulva and anus. It varies in degrees and can be relieved when the menstrual blood flows smoothly.
  • Pain beginning before or during the period suggests excess.
  • Pain beginning at the end or after the period suggests deficiency.
  • Pressure making the pain worse suggests excess.
  • Pressure making the pain better suggests deficiency.
    Differential Diagnosis:
Stagnation of Qi and Blood Lower abdominal pain during, or one to two days before, the period, feelings of distention and tenderness in the abdomen and breasts, hesitant start of menstrual flow, pain relieved after passing clots, pre-menstrual tension and irritability. Blood: Dark with clots
Tongue: Purple body with purple spots
    Pulse: Wiry Stagnation of cold
Lower abdominal pain several days before the period or during the period. Pain relieved by the application of heat, feelings of cold in the abdomen, and sore back. Blood: Scanty, dark, with clots

    Dysmenorrhea: Painful Periods
There are two types of dysmenorrhea: the first, primary dysmenorrhea , is more common in teens and is not caused by a disease or other condition. Instead, the culprit is prostaglandin, the same chemical behind cramps. Large amounts of prostaglandin can lead to nausea, vomiting , headaches, backaches, diarrhea , and severe cramps. Fortunately, these symptoms usually last for only a day or 2. Secondary dysmenorrhea is pain caused by some physical condition like polyps or fibroids in the uterus, endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), or adenomyosis (uterine tissue growing into the muscular wall of the uterus). Endometriosis
In this condition, tissue normally found only in the uterus starts to grow outside the uterus - in the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or other parts of the pelvic cavity. It can cause abnormal bleeding, dysmenorrhea, and general pelvic pain.

Menstrual pain in young girls is often severe and relatively long-lasting. Especially at the onset of the menstrual period, the pain usually is experienced as severe. Ideally a gynecologist should be seen at the outset of menstrual periods to determine if everything is normal. If normal, the aches and pains can be eased or cured by a cup of chamomile tea, drunk very warm, or with peppermint tea or even caraway tea. These herbs contain essential oils with antispasmodic effects. Rotate the three teas, if preferred. Prepare the tea: pour 8 oz.

    Dysmenorrhea
    What is dysmenorrhea?
Dysmenorrhea is a menstrual condition characterized by severe and frequent menstrual cramps and pain associated with menstruation. Dysmenorrhea may be classified as primary or secondary.
    • primary dysmenorrhea - from the beginning and usually lifelong; severe and frequent menstrual cramping caused by severe and abnormal uterine contractions. secondary dysmenorrhea - due to some physical cause and usually of later onset; painful menstrual periods caused by another medical condition present in the body (i.e., pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis).
    What causes dysmenorrhea?
The cause of dysmenorrhea depends on whether the condition is primary or secondary. In general, females with primary dysmenorrhea experience abnormal uterine contractions as a result of a chemical imbalance in the body (particularly prostaglandin and arachidonic acid - both chemicals which control the contractions of the uterus). Secondary dysmenorrhea is caused by other medical conditions, most often endometriosis (a condition in which tissue that looks and acts like endometrial tissue becomes implanted outside the uterus, usually on other reproductive organs inside the pelvis or in the abdominal cavity - often resulting in internal bleeding, and pelvic pain). Other possible causes of secondary dysmenorrhea include the following:

    Menstrual Cramps (Dysmenorrhea)
    What are menstrual cramps?
Menstrual cramps are pain or discomfort in the lower abdomen just before or during a menstrual period. Dysmenorrhea is the medical term for menstrual cramps. Dysmenorrhea can be either primary or secondary. Primary dysmenorrhea usually starts 1 to 2 years after your first period. Secondary dysmenorrhea results from a specific disease or disorder.

    Painful Periods (Dysmenorrhea)
It's Not Your Imagination! Over the years you may have read ... or been told .... that it was "all in your mind" ... that you were exaggerating the actual discomfort ... or that it was simply the price you had to pay for being female. Medical experts, however, have shown that painful menstruation is a physical problem, and that most cases can be successfully treated. Symptoms Dysmenorrhea often includes one or more of such symptoms as mild to severe cramping in the lower abdomen, backache pain and pulling on the inside of the thighs, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, fainting, or headache. If you are like most women who suffer from dysmenorrhea, the symptoms are usually more severe on the first day of flow. They probably decrease as your period continues, and in most cases last no more than 12-16 hours. However, some women experience discomfort from the beginning to the end of the menstrual flow, which may be for as long as 5-6 days. A Common Problem Dysmenorrhea is the most common cause of lost work and school hours among women in the United States. In fact, 42 million women in the United States suffer from painful menstrual symptoms. Of these, about 3 1/2 million are unable to function for one to two days each month because the condition is so severe.
