Taken from KidsHealth Magazine, August, 2002. If your child has been diagnosed with dwarfism, you're probably wondering what lies ahead for her and your family. You may be asking if your child will lead a normal life, or perhaps you're concerned about the challenges she'll face growing up with below-average height. It may be comforting to know that your family is not alone. Although estimates vary, between one in 14,000 and one in 27,000 babies are born each year with some form of dwarfism. Many people with dwarfism and their families belong to active social and support groups for people of short stature. To learn more about the condition and living with dwarfism, read on. What Is Dwarfism?
Dwarfism describes an unusually short stature that can arise from a variety of genetic and other conditions. The Little People of America, one of the largest and most active support groups for people with dwarfism, considers dwarfism to be an adult height of 4 feet 10 inches or less. Many types of dwarfism are skeletal dysplasias , conditions marked by abnormal bone growth. They are divided into two types: short-trunk and short-limb dysplasias.

    July 9
At only 30 inches tall, she appeared doll-sized compared to her fellow first-graders. Taylor, now 8 years old and 13 pounds, suffers from a rare disorder called primordial dwarfism. Amazingly, in spite of her diminutive stature, she has managed to live a relatively normal life. Confusing Condition Though Taylor was only born one month prematurely, she weighed 1 pound, 13 ounces. No one knew why she was so small, including her 23-year-old mother, Jennifer, who had already given birth to a healthy daughter named Shea. One doctor suggested that Taylor's condition could be due to fetal alcohol syndrome, which would have meant that Jennifer had consumed alcohol heavily during her pregnancy. Though Taylor's features were consistent with FAS, Jennifer said she didn't drink during her pregnancy. So Jennifer began calling groups and organizations to investigate unusual disorders and dwarfism. But Taylor's body had normal proportions compared to the most common types of dwarfism, in which the limbs appear out of proportion to the body.

( 1 out of 25,000 births ) defects appear in the enchondral bone formation causing the bone or cartilage to grow abnormally causing a short limbed skeletal dysplasia.

    Dwarfism
Dwarfism is a genetic condition in which a person, animal or plant is much below the ordinary size of the species. There are many causes of dwarfism in humans, Achondroplasia (one of over 500 skeletal dysplasias) is the most frequently diagnosed. Approximately 1 in 40,000 children are affected, and there seems to be no gender bias. Acceptable terms for referring to a person born with dwarfism include: dwarf, little person (oppose big person) and short-statured. Terms like midget, shrimp, etc., are very offensive and outdated.

Up Dysplasia [ Dwarfism ] References Dwarfism syndromes are complex, heterogeneous, and generally rare. Most radiologists are familiar with achondroplasia, the most common short-limbed dwarfism syndrome, but there are a variety of other syndromes within this category, and three other types of limb shortening. In fact, dwarfism as an entity is a type of skeletal dysplasia - a term used to refer to syndromes with abnormal bone growth and development. The term dwarf is somewhat ambiguous, but generally refers to a condition with shortening of a limb or the spine such that the pattern is recognized as a syndrome and that the affected region is generally shorter than 97 % of children of the same age. It should be noted, however, that children with very short stature but no limb shortening may simply be normal or may have a metabolic condition such as malnutrition. Several terms are used when describing which bone within a limb is most shortened: Rhizomelic: proximal shortening (humerus or femur) Mesomelic: middle shortening (tibia/fibula or radius/ulna) Acromelic: distal shortening (hand) Micromelic: entire limb shortened How then, to approach the dwarfism syndromes? One scheme is presented below. On the right, the classification system is described. On the left, examples within these categories are listed. Please click on one of these to further investigate.

Some hesitate, others smile but all would like to touch these little persons, these little dwarfs some even say. But nowadays, it is considered more appropriate to refer to us as little people. We recognize as little people all those born with one of some 100 medical diagnoses related to dwarfism. In Quebec, 3 500 persons are living with a medical diagnosis always recognized by specific congenital malformations generated by one form of dwarfism. It is important to know that anyone can give birth to a child with dwarfism; 8 cases out of 10 are simply due to some sort of chromosomic disorder. However, one thing is common to all : those concerned are left with a profound weakness of their bone structure, always affec-ting the growth process, therefore creating the small stature we all recognize. So, as a reminder, never forget that those living with dwarfism are, medically speaking from their birth and all through their life, persons bearing physical as well as functional limitations, also called handicaps. This definition of dwarfism is incomplete without a second level of limitations, being the never ending list of social and environmental situations in which all little people are helpless. These are those realities in which normal duties such as reaching for commodities or facing public counters become total nightmares. We are confronted with a double handicap: one is related to our physiological deficiencies coupled with architectural difficulties where everything is always too high.

Dwarfism may be associated with a skeletal dysplasia or may be due to failure of growth, e.g. pituitary failure with absence of growth hormone. The investigation of dwarfism depends on the suspected cause. If a skeletal dysplasia is suspected, a skeletal survey is indicated. If a central cause is suspected, MR imaging of the pituitary gland is performed. The term "dwarfism" is now generally replaced by "short stature". By Maureen Costello, Globe Correspondent, 11/27/2003 STOW Donning jeans and a stylish hot-pink blouse, Lindsey Hawkes walked to the front of her school assembly, accepted a microphone from principal Ron Larrivie, and led 250 schoolmates in song. ADVERTISEMENT The 7-year-old did not miss a note in "God Bless America," the song she learned after repeatedly hearing it in the wake of Sept. 11. When she was finished, Lindsey returned the mike and blended back in with her first-grade classmates at Pompositticut School. The assembly was the first installment of the CARES program, an initiative to promote sensitivity, awareness, and social skills among kindergartners through second-graders at Pompo and third- through fifth-graders at the Center School. Lindsey's parents, Don and Lori Hawkes, beamed along the sidelines with about 20 other parents who took advantage of the open invitation last Friday. They were not only the proud parents of the soloist, they were also responsible for the presence of the guest speaker, Barbara Spiegel, a board member of the 8,000-member Little People of America.

    Pituitary dwarfism
Pituitary dwarfism is a condition of growth retardation characterized by patients who are very short but have normal body proportions. It is caused by a dysfunction of the pituitary gland, the pea-sized mass of tissue located at the base of the brain. (Illustration by Electronic Illustrators Group.)
    Definition
Dwarfism is a condition in which the growth of the individual is very slow or delayed. There are many forms of dwarfism. The word pituitary is in reference to the pituitary gland in the body. This gland regulates certain chemicals (hormones) in the body. Therefore, pituitary dwarfism is decreased bodily growth due to hormonal problems. The end result is a proportionate little person, because the height as well as the growth of all other structures of the individual are decreased.
    Description
Pituitary dwarfism is caused by problems arising in the pituitary gland. The pituitary gland is also called the hypophysis. The pituitary gland is divided into two halves: the anterior (front) and posterior (back) halves. The anterior half produces six hormones: growth hormone, adrenocorticotropin (corticotropin), thyroid stimulating homone (thyrotropin), prolactin, follicle stimulating hormone, and lutenizing hormone. The posterior pituitary gland only produces two hormones. It produces antidiuretic hormone (vasopressin) and oxytocin. Most forms of dwarfism are a result of decreased production of hormones from the anterior half of the pituitary gland. The most common form is due to decreases of growth hormone which will be discussed here. These decreases during childhood cause the individual's arms, legs, and other structures to develop normal proportions for their bodies, but at a decreased rate.
