Primordial Dwarfism is a category of disorders with many subtypes. Its definition is vague but basically means that these children are profoundly growth delayed for their gestational age before birth and at birth .There may be several links to why this occurs. Some of these subtypes are:

Primordial Dwarfism
Estimates of the number of individuals with dwarfism in the United States range from 100,000 to 500,000. Most cases of short stature are caused by skeletal or endocrine disorders. Including all known types, there are currently over 200 types of dwarfism, primordial dwarfism included.
PRIMORDIAL DWARFISM (PD) IS A DIAGNOSTIC CATEGORY INCLUDING VARIOUS SPECIFIC TYPES OF SEVERE PROPORTIONATE DWARFISM IN WHICH INDIVIDUALS ARE SMALL FOR THEIR CHRONOLOGICAL AGE FROM THE VERY BEGINNINGS OF LIFE.
Individuals with primordial dwarfism usually come to attention even before they are born. Most are diagnosed by ultrasound as small for gestational age (SGA) or as having intra uterine growth retardation (IUGR). Consequently, they are born at extremely low birth weights (less than 4 pounds). After birth, growth occurs at an extremely slow rate leaving affected individuals years behind their peers in size. Individuals with primordial dwarfism measure well below the 3rd percentile on standardized growth charts.

Little chance
The Station Agent and its star, Peter Dinklage, cast dwarfism in a new, well-rounded light
BY DAN KENNEDY NEAR THE BEGINNING of The Station Agent , a film that makes its Boston debut on Friday, there is a moment that says much about what it’s like to be different — and about how easy it is for someone to fall into the trap of imbuing his particular difference with more meaning than it warrants. Fin, played by the dwarf actor Peter Dinklage, is walking along the side of the road when an SUV driven by Olivia (Patricia Clarkson) careens out of control and forces him to dive into the brush. Later in the day, it happens again. Their first encounters — she all nervous, twitching apologies, he just trying to get away — are revealing. Fin obviously believes Olivia swerved off the road because she freaked out at seeing a dwarf. But she — and we — know that she is merely a terrible driver. It’s that kind of subtlety — acknowledging Fin’s difference, yet resolutely refusing to give it more weight than it deserves — that makes Dinklage’s Finbar McBride perhaps the most important film role a dwarf has ever played.

http://www.shortsupport.org/Health/Dwarfism.html
Header(1, "H2", "Dwarfism") Achondroplasia, by far the most common form of dwarfism, occurs in one in every 20,000 births in the United States. It is a developmental anomaly that affects the growth of the bones. The patient's trunk is usually normal, but the head is unusually large and the arms and legs unusually small. Those who reach adulthood do not suffer any lessening of their mental or sexual abilities, and may have unusual muscular strength. Achondroplasia does not significantly shorten life span. There are more than 320 medical conditions known as dwarfism. A detailed study of dwarfism is outside the scope of this Web site. There are several good sites that address this medical condition.

Encyclopedia Index P Home Encyclopedia Encyclopedia Index P Pituitary dwarfism Definition Dwarfism is a condition in which the growth of the individual is very slow or delayed. There are many forms of dwarfism. The word pituitary is in reference to the pituitary gland in the body. This gland regulates certain chemicals (hormones) in the body. Therefore, pituitary dwarfism is decreased bodily growth due to hormonal problems. The end result is a proportionate little person, because the height as well as the growth of all other structures of the individual are decreased. Description Pituitary dwarfism is caused by problems arising in the pituitary gland. The pituitary gland is also called the hypophysis. The pituitary gland is divided into two halves: the anterior (front) and posterior (back) halves. The anterior half produces six hormones: growth hormone, adrenocorticotropin (corticotropin), thyroid stimulating homone (thyrotropin), prolactin, follicle stimulating hormone, and lutenizing hormone. The posterior pituitary gland only produces two hormones. It produces antidiuretic hormone (vasopressin) and oxytocin. Most forms of dwarfism are a result of decreased production of hormones from the anterior half of the pituitary gland. The most common form is due to decreases of growth hormone which will be discussed here. These decreases during childhood cause the individual's arms, legs, and other structures to develop normal proportions for their bodies, but at a decreased rate.

The study was begun after a litter of seven puppies was whelped; five of which showed some form of dwarfism. A search has begun to locate other dogs medically diagnosed with dwarfism. Pedigree analysis of the known affected dogs shows some common ancestry among them. However, most of the general population of Chesapeakes also shares common ancestry with these affected dogs; therefore pedigree analysis alone is not sufficient to eliminate the gene from the population. It is hoped that a genetic marker or mutation test can be developed to detect carriers. This study is privately funded, so no ACC funds are needed; however, the researchers are looking for affected dogs in order to help with development of a gene test. Anyone with an affected dog can contact Dr. Switzer, who is coordinating the effort to obtain dogs for this research. A blood sample and copy of pedigree from affected dogs are what is needed right now.

The Kaspar Hauser syndrome of Psychosocial Dwarfism
A common theme in reports of feral children is that they are small for their physical age. Although 13 at the time of her discovery, Genie looked more like a seven-year-old. Kaspar Hauser syndrome of psychosocial dwarfism failure to thrive . Feral children, even if they outwardly appear to be receiving adequate nutrition, do not grow and develop normally. The field of growth disorders caused by psychosocial stress is complicated. The terminology is changing, and new classifications and diagnostic criteria are being identified. You will see different terms used to describe variants of these disorders, such as reversible hyposomatotropinism, reversible hyposomatotropic dwarfism, psychosocial short stature and hyperphagic short stature. Psychosocial dwarfism, a rather general term for this class of disorders, is no longer current.
The cause of reversible hyposomatotropic dwarfism
Of specific relevance to feral children is reversible hyposomatotropic dwarfism. In this syndrome, the failure to grow is caused because production of growth hormone in these children is suppressed owing to excessively high levels of psychosocial stress. Once they are removed to a normal (nurturing) environment, there is usually rapid catch-up growth.

Diastrophic dwarfism Tips for children with diastrophic dysplasia to solve some questions about selfcare and adjustments to home and school. DIASTROPHIC HELP.
http://www.pixelscapes.com/ddhelp/
DIASTROPHIC HELP The purpose of this web site is to help the parents of children with diastrophic dysplasia (DDs for short) solve the very early questions of self-care and adjustments to the home and school environments. Diastrophic hands and the more limited range of motion pose special self-care challenges. These children learn to do everything well, but the early days can be confusing for parents, with each family trying to "reinvent the wheel". We hope to avoid some of that with the resources on this web site. We have attempted to put the hints in categories as much as possible, but there will be some overlap. The ideas here are NOT the last word, just a starting point. Although DD children are alike in many ways, they are also very different in their abilities at various ages. Size, limb proportion, and range of motion make it impossible to have just one formula that works for everyone. It is our hope that some of the hints listed here will work perfectly the first time and, barring that, that the child will figure out his/her own ways of improving on and adapting these hints. We have assumed the premise of using as few special gadgets as possible, and where gadgets are inevitable, an attempt has been made to have them be cheap, easily-made, and/or readily accessible for a lifetime. Some of the gadgets are shown here, while others can be found in medical supply catalogs.

Pituitary dwarfism
by Tish Davidson
Definition
Pituitary dwarfism is a condition of growth retardation in which patients are very short, but have normal body proportions. Some children who have this condition go through delayed, but normal puberty and have normal reproductive capabilities. Others never become sexually mature.
Description
Pituitary dwarfism is caused by a dysfunction of the pituitary gland. The pituitary gland is a pea-sized mass of tissue at the base of the brain. Functionally, it is divided into two parts, the anterior pituitary and the posterior pituitary. The anterior pituitary secretes growth hormone (GH), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), and prolactin. The posterior pituitary releases antidiuretic hormone (ADH) and oxytocin. There are two types of pituitary dwarfism:
  • Panhypopituitarism due to a deficit of all of the anterior pituitary hormones. There is proportionate, generalized slow growth and patients do not go through puberty. This accounts for about 2/3 of pituitary dwarfism cases.
