n : a genetic condition resulting in short stature.
Dwarf
1. A diminutive human being.
adjective
1. A reference to anything much below the usual or average size; as, dwarf tree; dwarf honeysuckle.
Midget
1. Offensive. An extremely little person who is of proportionate stature.
2. A small or miniature version of something.
3. A class of small objects, as a class of very small sailboats or racing cars. adjective 1. Miniature; diminutive. 2. Belonging to a type or class much smaller than what is considered standard: a midget automobile. Note: We are first and foremost human beings, it is secondary that we are human beings who are of restricted growth. Use of the word "midget" to describe someone of short stature is considered extremely offensive by some people. It is better to refer to someone of short stature as a "Little Person" or "Dwarf". Also, some people find the term "dwarf" as equally offensive as "midget". If people, both average and short stature, were able to place their humanity before everything else, the world might be a much better place. The more we stick labels on each other, the more we segregate ourselves, and the more we encourage ignorance and prejudice. Names From Around The World Worldwide Dwarf Population There are many conditions and diseases that can cause short stature. Some of these conditions involve a primary bone disorder - the bones do not grow and develop normally. These conditions are called skeletal dysplasia. Over 500 specific skeletal dysplasias have been identified. Of these, Achondroplasia is the most common, affecting about 80% of all Little People. An individual with Achondroplasia has disproportionate short stature. It occurs in all races and with equal frequency in males and females, and affects about one in every 40,000 children (this was the most conservative estimate available).

If your child has been diagnosed with dwarfism, you're probably wondering what lies ahead for her and your family. You may be asking if your child will lead a normal life, or perhaps you're concerned about the challenges she'll face growing up with below-average height. It may be comforting to know that your family is not alone. Although estimates vary, between one in 14,000 and one in 27,000 babies are born each year with some form of dwarfism. Many people with dwarfism and their families belong to active social and support groups for people of short stature. To learn more about the condition and living with dwarfism, read on. What Is Dwarfism?
Dwarfism describes an unusually short stature that can arise from a variety of genetic and other conditions. The Little People of America, one of the largest and most active support groups for people with dwarfism, considers dwarfism to be an adult height of 4 feet 10 inches or less. Many types of dwarfism are skeletal dysplasias , conditions marked by abnormal bone growth. They are divided into two types: short-trunk and short-limb dysplasias.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: What is the definition of dwarfism? A: Little People of America (LPA) defines dwarfism as a medical or genetic condition that usually results in an adult height of 4'10" or shorter, among both men and women, although in some cases a person with a dwarfing condition may be slightly taller than that. Q: What are the most common types of dwarfism? A: By far the most frequently diagnosed cause of short stature is achondroplasia , a genetic condition that results in disproportionately short arms and legs. (The term "disproportionate" is meant only as a point of comparison with people who do not have achondroplasia or any other type of skeletal dysplasia. The arms and legs of a person with achondroplasia are perfectly appropriate for someone with that genetic condition.) The average height of adults with achondroplasia is 4'0". Other genetic conditions that result in short stature include spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita (SED) diastrophic dysplasia pseudoachondroplasia hypochondroplasia , and osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) . As one might expect from their names, pseudoachondroplasia and hypochondroplasia are conditions that are frequently confused with achondroplasia; diastropic dysplasia occasionally is, too. OI is characterized by fragile bones that fracture easily.

Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Abnormally short height in childhood may be due to dysfunction of the pituitary gland causing underproduction of growth hormone . A variety of genetic syndromes, a tumor in the pituitary gland , the absence of the pituitary gland, or trauma are some of the known causes of this condition, but in most cases no underlying cause of the deficiency is found.
Growth retardation may become evident in infancy and persists throughout childhood. The "growth curve," demonstrated by plotting sequential height measurements on a standardized growth chart, may range from flat (no growth) to very shallow (minimal growth). Normal puberty may or may not occur, depending on the degree of pituitary insufficiency (inability of the pituitary to produce adequate hormone levels other than growth hormone).

    11. Dwarfism - What Is It?
Research Fund is the only health organization in the world supporting research for the special medical needs of Little People people affected with dwarfism.
    http://www.lprf.org/dwarfism.html
Dwarfism is the result of the disproportionate growth of the skeleton. In most cases, dwarfism is genetically determined. We refer to those affected as "Little People." IMPACT OF DWARFISM Most Little People encounter progressive deformities during childhood. These deformities may lead to disability. In some instances, breathing difficulties, gradual paralysis and even death may result. IS THERE TREATMENT? Yes. As a result of treatment, deformities can be corrected and mobility returned. Affected individuals can become capable of independent living. Do I Know a Little Person? You probably do! Dwarfism can affect any baby born anytime, about 1 in 10,000 births. Most children with dwarfism are from average stature parents. ANY COUPLE CAN HAVE A CHILD WITH DWARFISM. Family history and parent's stature are usually not relevant to the child's dwarfism. Some syndromes are caused by genetic mutations at the moment of conception. Other syndromes are caused by the random combination of two recessive genes that may have been dormant for generations. (Examples of recessive genes are blue eyes or blond hair. The child must receive one recessive gene from each parent to show the trait.) Dwarfism is a general term covering a large number of medical conditions which result in short stature. In many cases, the condition is genetic. We refer to persons affected with dwarfism as "Little People", and the condition is often referred to as "short stature". It varies by condition; in addition to being short, the individual may have moderate to severe orthopaedic difficulties. Over time, gravity pulls on the skeleton of the Little Person and progressively leads to a loss of mobility. In the most severe cases, children may lose the ability to walk, and other functions are profoundly affected. In some cases, without early medical intervention, the child may die.
