What is Dry Eye Syndrome?
Dry Eye is actually a collection of symptoms that make up an eye condition that stems from an imbalance in the quantity or quality of tears . These symptoms include dry, red, gritty, and even watery eyes. Often, Dry Eye sufferers report the feeling of something foreign within the eye or eye strain.
What Causes Dry Eye Syndrome?
The moisture level in the eye is maintained by the balance of tear production and tear loss through drainage and evaporation. When this balance is not sustained, dry spots appear on the surface of the eye and cause irritation.
Can Watery Eyes Be a Symptom of Dry Eye Syndrome?
Yes. As odd as it sounds, many Dry Eye sufferers experience ‘wet eyes’ due to the tear glands overproducing watery or reflex tears to compensate for a lack of a balanced tear film.

Dry eye means that your eyes do not produce enough tears or that you produce tears which do not have the proper chemical composition. Often, dry eye is part of the natural aging process. It can also be caused by blinking or eyelid problems, medications like antihistamines, oral contraceptives and antidepressants, a dry climate, wind and dust, general health problems like arthritis or Sjogren's syndrome and chemical or thermal burns to your eyes. If you have dry eye, your symptoms may include irritated, scratchy, dry, uncomfortable or red eyes, a burning sensation or feeling of something foreign in your eyes and blurred vision. Excessive dry eyes may damage eye tissue, scar your cornea (the front covering of your eyes) and impair vision and make contact lens wear difficult. If you have symptoms of dry eye, please contact me for a comprehensive examination. Dry eye cannot be cured, but there are treatments so that your eyes remain healthy and your vision is unaffected. Some treatments might include blinking more frequently, increasing humidity at home or work, using artificial tears and using a moisturizing ointment, especially at bedtime. In some cases, small plugs are inserted in the corner of the eyes to slow tear drainage. Sometimes, surgical closure of the drainage ducts may be recommended.
Recently, a new Ophthalmic Emulsion called "Restasis" has been introduced to the market by Allergan. It works to increase tear production by stopping the inflamation that is found in dry eye (keratocvonjunctivitis sica). For more information, go to

Dry Eye
And Our Experience With It
Numerous links for more information on Dry Eye follows Taffy's story....
Taffy came back to us at those Specialties - and was every bit as beautiful at that stage as I had hoped she would be when she left our home a month earlier. Her eye looked fine - as long as it was kept constantly lubricated with artificial tears and a medication to help with the pain. When we woke up that first morning after her return it was obvious that this was a serious problem. Taffy's eye was completely glued shut with a yellow goo that had dried to a hard, crusty finish. We cleaned her eye, remedicated it and within minutes she looked just fine.
Upon arriving home I immediately made an appointment with my own vet - who took one look and sent us to Dr. Lindley of Animal Eye Consultants. We had been using Dr. Lindley for several years for our annual CERF exams so knew she was at least familiar with the breed - and appeared to like them. We did not receive good news on this first visit of many..............
Taffy definitely had "Dry Eye", caused by a congenital condition called "lacrimal gland hypoplasia". In simple terms, it is a birth defect that results in the lack of growth of the tear producing glands. In Taffy's case she had

http://www.preventblindness.org/eye_problems/dryeyeFAQ.html
Frequently Asked Questions about
Dry Eye
Q: What is dry eye?
Our natural tears protect our eyes and give them moisture that is absolutely necessary for clear and comfortable vision. Some people are unable to produce enough of these tears, leaving the eyes dry and easily irritated. In this condition that affects millions of Americans, blinking no longer leaves a moist "tear film" to wash and soothe the eye. The irritation and discomfort that result may make a difference in one's ability to see. In rare cases, dry eye can become serious—even blinding—without proper care and treatment.
Q: What causes dry eye?
It's not clear why some people are unable to produce enough natural tears. However, one cause of dry eye is Sjogren's Syndrome, a disease involving mild to extreme dryness in both the eyes and the mouth. This disorder may be connected with menopause and arthritis. However, dry eye can also be caused by other eye disorders.
Q: What treatment is available?

Thyroid Eye Disease (Graves' Disease)
What is the Thyroid Gland?
The thyroid gland is located in the neck. It manufactures two thyroid hormones that are essential for metabolism and growth. The thyroid takes iodine from the food we eat and uses it to make thyroid hormones. If thyroid hormones are in short supply, a person feels sluggish, has a slow heartbeat, and can even feel depressed. Doctors call this condition hypothyroidism. If a newborn has hypothyroidism, the baby can develop a condition called cretinism. The baby may have slowed development and poor intelligence unless the condition is corrected.
Too much thyroid hormone is called hyperthyroidism and is also a problem. This condition is almost the exact opposite of hypothyroidism. The individual has a fast heartbeat, weight loss, nervousness, and heat intolerance. In addition, hyperthyroidism can affect the eye.
One of the conditions that results in hyperthyroidism is Graves' disease. This condition afflicts a great many people. In this disease, the thyroid gland enlarges and releases too much thyroid hormone. The person can become restless and overactive, and the heart often races.

Normal vision requires a moist healthy ocular surface. A sufficient quality of tears, a normal composition of the tear film, normal lid closure, and regular blinking are among the prerequisites to maintain a healthy ocular surface. What is Dry Eye?
Dry eye is a disorder of the tear film due to tear deficiency or excessive tear evaporation which causes damage to the interpalpebral ocular surface (i.e. exposed eye surface) and is associated with symptoms of ocular discomfort. This definition of dry eyes was adopted by the National Eye Institute workshop on dry eyes. The eye becomes dry either because there is not enough tears being produced or because there is abnormally high rate of evaporation of tears. Dry Eyes Evaporative Dry Eye Environmental factors

http://www.agingeye.net/dryeyes/dryeyesdrugtreatment.php
Home > Dry Eyes Drug Treatment Medical Dictionary
The mainstay of dry eye treatment is the use of artifical tears, gels or ointments. These can be used several times a day. In general for mild to moderate dry eye this is all that is needed. Punctal plugs may also be placed in the lower or upper eyelids. In severe dry eyes other agents like mild steroid eye drops or cyclosporin eye drops may be considered. The use of oral agents (salagen) is also possible.
Artificial Tears
Tear replacement by topical artificial tears and lubricants is currently the most widely used therapy for dry eye. The goal of using tear substitutes is to increase humidity at the ocular surface and to improve lubrication. In addition, artificial tears smooth the corneal surface of dry eye patients, an effect that contributes to improved vision.
The use of artificial tears has obvious limitations. Natural tears have a complex composition of water, salts, hydrocarbons, proteins, and lipids, which artificial tears cannot completely substitute. In addition, the integrity of the three-layered lipid, aqueous, and mucin structure, vital to the effective functioning of the tear film, cannot be reproduced by these artificial components.
The Preservative Dilemma
Traditionally, there have been two types of artificial tears: tears packaged in a bottle that contain a preservative (multi-dose bottles) and tears packaged in individual droppers that must be discarded immediately after one use and are preservative-free (single-dose units). These preservative-free, single-dose units were developed for individuals with a sensitivity to preservatives.
