This syndrome usually, although not always, results in mental retardation and other conditions. Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top In most cases, Down syndrome is caused by an extra chromosome 21. It is the most common single cause of human birth defects, with an occurence in 1 out of every 660 births. Children with Down syndrome have a widely recognized characteristic appearance. The head may be smaller than normal (microcephaly) and abnormally shaped. Prominent facial features include a flattened nose, protruding tongue, and upward slanting eyes. The inner corner of the eyes may have a rounded fold of skin (epicanthal fold) rather than coming to a point. The hands are short and broad with short fingers and often have a single crease in the palm (simian crease). Retardation of normal growth and development is typical and most affected children never reach average adult height.
Congenital heart defects are frequently present in Down syndrome children. Early mortality is often a result of cardiac abnormalities. Gastrointestinal abnormalities such as

References Growth charts for children with Down syndrome can be found in the journal Pediatrics (81) 1988. The charts on this website were adopted from these charts using the method shown below. If you would like to read more about growth charts as they relate to Down syndrome, you may want to check out Woodbine House, 1995.
What do the Curves Mean? Each chart shows five percentile curves. An example of how percentiles work is as follows:
Suppose we sample 100 children with DS (all the same age) and arrange them according to ascending height. We can find the 10th percentile by plotting child number 10, and the 90th percentile would be the height of child number 90. If you plot your child's data, and he or she is shown as being in the 50th percentile, you could assume if we lined up 100 children your child's age, that 49 would be shorter and 50 taller than he or she.
Intrepretation For interpretation, Dr. Len Leshin suggests:

Parents Medical Problems
Maybe your child was just diagnosed with Down syndrome or you know a child who is affected by it. Or maybe you're pregnant and you've heard about prenatal testing for Down syndrome. Read on to learn all about one of the most frequently encountered chromosomal abnormalities, occurring in one of approximately every 800 to 1,000 live births. Causes
The most common cause of Down syndrome occurs when an infant is born with three, rather than two, copies of the 21st chromosome (known medically as trisomy 21). Normally there are 46 chromosomes (23 pairs), half of which are inherited from each parent. Children with Down syndrome, however, have cells that usually contain not 46, but 47 chromosomes, the extra one being a third chromosome 21. It is this extra genetic material in infants with Down syndrome that disrupts their physical and cognitive development. Why Down syndrome occurs is a mystery. It can happen to anyone. Scientists do know that women ages 35 and older have a significantly increased risk of giving birth to a child with Down syndrome. A 35-year-old woman has a one in 350 chance of conceiving a child with Down syndrome; by age 40 this jumps to about one in 100. By age 45 the odds are one in 30. However, because younger women give birth more often, most babies with Down syndrome are still born to younger mothers. According to the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS), more than 250,000 people in the United States alone are affected.

Definition
Down syndrome is the most common and readily identifiable chromosomal condition associated with mental retardation. It is caused by a chromosomal abnormality: for some unexplained reason, an accident in cell development results in 47 instead of the usual 46 chromosomes. This extra chromosome changes the orderly development of the body and brain. In most cases, the diagnosis of Down syndrome is made according to results from a chromosome test administered shortly after birth. Back to top
Incidence
Approximately 4,000 children with Down syndrome are born in the U.S. each year, or about 1 in every 800 to 1,000 live births. Although parents of any age may have child with Down syndrome, the incidence is higher for women over 35. Most common forms of the syndrome do not usually occur more than once in a family. Characteristics
There are over 50 clinical signs of Down syndrome, but it is rare to find all or even most of them in one person. Some common characteristics include:
