Diverticulitis
A diverticulum is generally an acquired outpouching of the colon. This condition is found in more than half of all persons over age 60. However, very few cases actually develop into diverticulitis (inflammation of the diverticulum). In some persons, the lower end of the colon near the rectum (the sigmoid colon) is exposes repeatedly to the very high pressures of contraction. When the stool in the area is propelled forward during a bowel movement, when the fecal matter is hard or compacted, the contractions become increasingly forceful. Ultimately, like the inner tube of a tire, the weaker areas of the colon wall bulge and sometimes form hundreds of diverticula. Some authorities believe the factors responsible are dietary. High fiber foods generally retain water as they move through the colon, leaving the stool soft and easy to expel. With no fiber the stool is hard and inflexible. Poor fluid intake may have the same effect. Chronic laxatives may cause forceful contractions as well. Diverticulitis results when factors weaken the wall of the diverticulum so much that the wall microscopically perforates into the surrounding abdominal cavity. From there on, a process similar to appendicitis may occur.

Diverticulosis And Diverticulitis
Diverticulosis is the presence of a pouch or sac that protrudes out from the lining of the wall of the intestine. This occurs in the descending stretch of the colon. These pouches may be present in over one-third of all people over 60. Most go unnoticed. If the pouch becomes inflamed, the condition becomes known as diverticulitis. The major cause of these pouches is a low fiber diet over many years. Diverticulitis can range from a mild to serious disease. More than two-thirds of persons with diverticulosis do not have symptoms. When symptoms are present they may include the following:
  • severe pain in the left lower side of the abdomen an aching pain in the lower left side constipation or loose stools nausea and vomiting and a low-grade fever
Check with your healthcare provider for an evaluation of your bowel if you have any of the above symptoms. There will be certain laboratory tests including:

105. Diverticulitis, Small Pouch In Colon
diverticulitis. This condition is called diverticulosis. When pouches become infected or inflamed, the condition is called diverticulitis.
http://www.surgery.usc.edu/divisions/cr/diverticulitis.html
Diverticulitis Most people have small pouches in their colons that bulge out through weak spots. A pouch is called a diverticulum, and multiple pouches are called diverticula. This condition is called diverticulosis. When pouches become infected or inflamed, the condition is called diverticulitis. The cause of this disease is unknown, but it is believed that the association of a diet not containing sufficient fiber which contributes to constipation, makes the muscles strain to move stool that is too hard, causing increased pressure in the colon. This pressure instigates the weak spots in the colon to bulge out and become diverticula. Symptoms for diverticulitis and diverticulosis differ. Most people with diverticulosis do not have any discomfort or symptoms. However, symptoms may include mild cramps, bloating, and constipation. The most common symptom of diverticulitis is abdominal pain, with tenderness around the left side of the lower abdomen. Diverticulitis can be a source of rectal bleeding. If an infection is the cause, fever, nausea, vomiting, chills, cramping, and constipation may occur as well. The severity of symptoms depends on the extent of the infection and complications. Diverticulitis can lead to complications such as infections, perforations or tears, blockages, or bleeding. These complications always require treatment to prevent them from progressing and causing serious illness. Treatment may include open or laparoscopic surgery. A colostomy is infrequently needed unless it is an emergency.

Diverticulitis (The Self Help Series) > Customer Review #1: Diverticulitis

Once you set aside the Authors rantings about Science, Food Manufactures and the Medical Society, this book is GREAT. It conirmed some of the action I had already taken regarding a fast during a bout, but the most important and revelationary information I got is the "Toilet Drill" and "Abdominal Ecercises". Never had I ever been told how to empty my bowels to avoid stress on the stomach. That information alone, was well worth the book. Dont give up on the book, the 104 pages was information I already knew, but the last 14 are worth it.
