WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
Diverticulitis (di-ver-tik-u-LIE-tis) is an inflammation of small pouches called ""diverticula'' that often develop in the wall of the large bowel (colon). Waste from digested food can get trapped in the diverticula and cause swelling and pain.
Causes
Frequently no cause can be found. Having a family history of diverticulitis or eating a low-fiber diet may make you more likely to have this problem.
Signs/Symptoms
The main symptom is abdominal pain that either comes and goes or lasts all the time. You may also have a fever, feel like throwing up, or develop tenderness in the belly.
Care
Your doctor may order x-rays and tests. If the diverticula are infected, you may be given antibiotics. If you have a bad infection or if you need surgery to remove part of the colon, you may need a stay in the hospital.

IBS Glossary
Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Diverticular Disease can cause similar symptoms, but they arise from completely different pathologies. While the medical treatments for the two disorders are quite disimilar, many of the lifestyle strategies for minimizing pain and bowel dysfunction are identical (particularly dietary changes and the use of gut-soothing herbs such as fennel and peppermint). Irritable Bowel Syndrome is defined as a functional gut disorder and is not actually a disease at all.

What is diverticular disease?
Many people have small pouches in their colons that bulge outward through weak spots, like an inner tube that pokes through weak places in a tire. Each pouch is called a diverticulum. Pouches (plural) are called diverticula. The condition of having diverticula is called diverticulosis. About half of all Americans age 60 to 80, and almost everyone over age 80, have diverticulosis.
When these pouches become infected or inflamed, the condition is called diverticulitis. This happens in 10 to 25 percent of people with diverticulosis. Diverticulosis and diverticulitis are also called diverticular disease.

Diverticulitis and Diverticular Disease
What are diverticula? A diverticulum (if there are more than one they are known as 'diverticula') is a protrusion of the inner lining of the intestine through the outer muscular coat to form a small pouch with a narrow neck. The commonest site for diverticula to develop is the lower left part of the colon. The presence of diverticula is often referred to as diverticulosis. What causes diverticula to form? Closed segments occur within which pressure is high and it is thought that this pressure pushes out the pouches. Is the presence of diverticula harmful? We all begin life with an appendix, which is like a diverticulum in many ways, and we do not worry about it. In the same way many of us have diverticula projecting from the wall of our colon. We do not know we have them and they cause us no trouble. However, just like the appendix, a diverticulum can become inflamed due to infection. If this occurs, it causes local pain, can make a person feel ill, and can be dangerous because it may perforate or bleed. Inflammation of one or more diverticula is called diverticulitis. What is diverticular disease?

You are in: Esophagus, Stomach, and Intestine Diverticulosis and Diverticulitis Overview Diverticula are small pouches in the wall of the digestive tract. They occur when the inner layer of the digestive tract bulges through weak spots in the outer layer. (This is similar to what happens when an inner tube bulges through a tire.)
  • Although these pouches can occur anyplace from the mouth to the anus, most occur in the large intestine (colon), especially the left (lower) part of the colon just above the rectum.
These marble-sized pouches usually occur where blood vessels run through the intestinal wall.

Mac users: please note that our site is optimized for the Safari browser Food choices and health What to eat with diverticulitis? Originally Published: October 06, 2000 Dear Alice, I have diverticulitis. What can I eat, and what should I not eat? Thank you. Dear Reader, For those in need of a definition, diverticulosis is a condition that occurs when pouches or sacs are formed in the intestines. When these sacs become inflamed, it is then termed diverticul itis . The development of this disease is attributed to increased pressure in the intestinal tract. This pressure may occur, but is not limited to, when a person is constipated. The incidence of diverticul itis is greater in middle-aged and elderly folks. Epidemiological evidence suggests that diverticulosis occurs more often when people eat a highly refined, low fiber diet. Generally, if you're diagnosed with diverticulosis, a high fiber diet is key. Since fiber has the ability to absorb water and make stools bulky and soft, pressure on the intestinal tract decreases and waste products move along more quickly. High fiber cereals or unprocessed wheat bran, as well as plenty of fruits and veggies, are often recommended to be included in an eating plan. During a bout of diverticul itis , when you may be experiencing inflammation, a LOW fiber diet is advised, until it subsides. It's a good idea to see your health care provider if you're experiencing any pain or bleeding.

General Description
This condition is characterized by small, pouch-like formations of the large intestine formed when the mucous membranes of the colon become inflamed. These pouches, or diverticula, often form with constipation and they cause symptoms when the waste matter becomes trapped in the pouches, which then become infected and inflamed. Poor diet and stress are major contrbuters to diverticulitis.
Symptoms may include: cramping, tenderness on the left side of the abdomen which is relieved with a bowel movement or with passing gas, constipation, diarrhea, and nausea.
Natural Supplements
  • Primadophilus Bifidus will help maintain the proper intestinal flora in order to improve assimilation and elimination.
  • Fiber helps prevent constipation and helps prevent infection by assisting in elimination thus preventing the accumulation of waste in the pouches in the colon walls.
  • Bentonite clay may assist in the healing of the intestinal walls.
  • B-Complex assists in all enzyme systems and for proper digestion. Be sure to use a hypoallergenic formula.

Treatment of Diverticulitis at Mayo Clinic in Rochester
Diverticula are small, bulging pouches that may develop in the wall of the large intestine (colon). Usually they are most numerous in the sigmoid colon. Many people have diverticula, especially after age 50. In most individuals they cause no problem. However when diverticula become infected, the condition is called diverticulitis and can cause pain, fever and nausea. Diverticulitis can range from mild pain to life-threatening infection. An important aspect of treating diverticulitis is to ascertain a correct diagnosis. Mayo Clinic offers an integrated, multidisciplinary team of specialists to diagnose and treat diverticulitis. In most cases, patients are diagnosed, and treatment, including surgery if necessary, is begun in three to four days. Occasionally, diverticulitis presents as an emergency requiring immediate surgery. Mayo Clinic specialists in Gastroenterology and Hepatology and Colon and Rectal Surgery are highly acclaimed physicians who have expertise in diagnosing and treating this condition. Gastroenterologists will rule out diseases that cause similar symptoms, such as irritable bowel syndrome, and refer patients who may require surgery to the colon and rectal surgeons.

description Diverticulosis is the presence anywhere in the large colon of outpouchings of bowel lining through weak spots in the bowel muscle. It would be analogous to a an inner tube bulging through multiple holes in a tire. It can occur in any or all segments of the larger colon such as the ascending, transverse, descending, or sigmoid colon. Diverticulitis is inflammation or infection of these pouches. The appendix is a unique, elongated diverticula located at the beginning of the large colon. Inflammation or infection of a diverticula is similar to an appendicitis and has the potential to rupture if untreated. Acute diverticulitis that results in surgical treatment is staged by a classification developed by E. J. Hinchey. The Hinchey classification separates diverticulitis into four stages, I : inflammation around the diverticula itself but confined to the colon (peri-colic abscess), II: pelvic, intraabdominal or retroperitoneal abscess, III: generalized inflammation of the abdominal cavity (peritonitis) with frank pus, and IV: generalized peritonitis with stool in the abdominal cavity. Diverticulosis is asymptomatic in about 70% of people, 5-10% of cases are complicated with bleeding and 10-15% develop diverticulitis (

Diverticula, Diverticulosis, Diverticulitis: What's the Difference?
By: W. Grant Thompson, MD. Participate Diverticula occur throughout the gut, but by far the most common and most important are those that occur in the colon. The diverticula discussed herein are colonic diverticula. Their importance is frequently misunderstood. What are diverticula?
A gut diverticulum (singular) is an outpouching of the wall of the gut to form a sac. Diverticula (plural) may occur at any level from esophagus to colon. A true diverticulum includes all three layers of the gut; the lining mucosa, the muscularis and the outer serosa. False diverticula are missing the muscularis and are therefore very thin walled. Colonic diverticula are typically false (Figure 1). Figure 1 : In this schematic diagram, intracolonic pressure increase due to annular muscular contraction can be seen pushing the mucosa through a defect in the colon muscle where, with the serosa, it forms the wall of a diverticulum. The defect is the route of an artery (not shown) that penetrates the colon muscle. Note the absence of muscle in the wall of the diverticulum. (From Thompson WG
