DISSOCIATIVE IDENTITY DISORDER
Formerly Multiple Personality Disorder Fact Sheet
What Is It?
DID/MPD is a disturbance of identity in which the person perceives themselves as being a number of individuals all living in the same mind. These individuals are known as alters (alternate personalities). Individual alters may or may not be aware of the others, thus the individuals take on the primary symptoms of amnesia. From their perspective this is known as "losing time". This also means that objects or new clothes may appear without them knowing where they have come from, or other people may recall conversations and times of which they have no memory. A person with DID/MPD may also have many somatic (or physical) complaints. eg:
  • Headaches, up to severe migraines Abdominal pain Chest pain Vaginal or anal pain Changes in vision Choking sensations
They may experience depression, mood swings, suicidal tendencies, sleep disorders, panic attacks and self mutilation, such as cutting or burning themselves. They can also suffer from flashbacks or reactions in which they seem to be reliving traumatic experiences as if trapped in some kind of 'time warp'.

The term alienist is an old term for a psychiatrist. Note that psychiatry is practiced by psychiatrists, psychology by psychologists. Psychiatrists have medical training, while psychologists have extensive training in therapy and psychological testing.

While widely accepted among psychologists and psychiatrists, the manual has proved controversial in its listing of certain characteristics as mental disorders. The most notorious example is the listing in the DSM-II of homosexuality as a mental disorder; a classification that was removed by vote of the APA in 1973 (see also homosexuality and psychology).

An Introduction to Dissociative Identity Disorder as a Model for Distributed Subjectivity in Cyberspace Vernon Reed, ACTLab, U of Texas Introduction The concept of dissociation Multiple personalities Causes of Dissociative Identity Disorder ... A new kind of self
Introduction
The very nature of cyberspace is acting as a sort of "universal solvent" to break up our long cherished notions of monolithic self and subjectivity. The ease with which we can take on new identities and new connectivities in the virtual domain implies a self which is multivalent, fluid and de-centered a self which often operates in parallel, in different modalities and different capacities. I propose that a model for this new, postmodern, postrationalist, cyberspatial self can be found in the cluster of psychological manifestations currently known as Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), and formerly and more popularly as Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD).
There is precedence for my proposal to use what is commonly seen as a form of mental illness as a ground for more fully realized being. Deleuze and Guattari put forth the ideal of the happy schizophrenic as a paradigm for dealing with our postmodern condition of existential free-fall (Deleuze and Guattari, 1977). Through a process of "schizo-analysis" they transform the concept of madness to one of primal creativity analogous to artistic creativity. This schizo-analysis is an essentially destructive process designed to break down the sorts of Modernist, totalizing institutions that Deleuze and Guattari see as oppressing and confining our true selves. The result is a nomadic, rootless self, free of family, belief and structure, and dedicated to relentless change.

Invest in Your Mind. Visit Our Book Section [BACK] What is Dissociative Identity Disorder? (formerly Multiple Personality Disorder) Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), previously referred to as multiple personality disorder (MPD), is a dissociative disorder involving a disturbance of identity in which two or more separate and distinct personality states (or identities) control the individual's behavior at different times. When under the control of one identity, the person is usually unable to remember some of the events that occurred while other personalities were in control. The different identities, referred to as alters, may exhibit differences in speech, mannerisms, attitudes, thoughts, and gender orientation. The alters may even differ in "physical" properties such as allergies, right-or-left handedness, or the need for eyeglass prescriptions. These differences between alters are often quite striking. The person with dissociative identity disorder may have as few as two alters, or as many as 100. The average number is about 10. Often alters are stable over time, continuing to play specific roles in the person's life for years. Some alters may harbor aggressive tendencies, directed toward individuals in the person's environment, or toward other alters within the person.

i recently got out of the hospital where the doctor said i also have d.i.d. (dissociative idenity disorder) could you explain exactly how this disorder works. i have been bi polar for 15 yrs.
    thanks
    Dear Marlene
Bipolar disorder and DID seem to be related somehow; I've had quite a few patients who started with the DID part then seemed to have a "bipolar-like" part as well. The treatments for bipolar disorder generally seem to help, at least some, with the DID. You've probably already learned to be cautious about taking antidepressants, which are often prescribed for folks with DID because they are used in "post-traumatic stress disorder" (PTSD) frequently, and help quite a few folks; but can make bipolar disorder have more rapid cycling and mixtures of up and down symptoms. Where to learn about DID? Here's a fine site to start. I hope you can find a local therapist who can help you, including helping work to make your marriage a safe circumstance. Dr. Phelps

    Dissociative Identity Disorder/Multiple Personality Disorder
Persons with dissociative identity disorder (DID) adopt one or more distinct identities. Each identity or personality is distinct from the other(s) in specific ways. There are cases in which a person will have as many as 100 or more identities, while some people only exhibit the presence of one or two. ("Co-presence" is the term used to describe the situation that exists when two or more personalities are simultaneously present with or without knowledge of each other's existence or current presence.) Prior to the publication of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder-IV ( DSM-IV), dissociative identity disorder was referred to as multiple personality disorder (MPD); the birth personality was referred to as the original personality, and the condition was referred to as "split personality." With the publication of DSM-IV

A great book about a difficult subject, THE DISSOCIATIVE IDENTITY DISORDER SOURCEBOOK is a must for professionals and lay-people alike. While this illness has been around for years, it has only been recently (or it has seemed that way) that the disorder has gotten the attention it deserves. This volume is more of a listing of everything about the illness, with invaluable descriptions and ideas on the subject. The best thing about it is the lines it draws between DID and the other mental illness that have been confused with that disorder.

Treating Dissociative Identity Disorder > Customer Review #1: Self Help Reader

I bought this book thinking more along the lines if "Self Help". I got 1/2 way through and gave it to my Doctor. It was very text book and rather clinical for my abilities but I would suggest that if you are helping a patient with DID this is a good source for referance.
Treating Dissociative Identity Disorder > Customer Review #2: Compared to the other books on MPD, this is the best. Ive been treating MPD for over a decade, but this book has the best in the field giving us their decades of experience. It really helped me to get current, and improved my clinical practice. I copy Dr. Spiras introductory chapter to give to my patients. I have the hardback, which is no longer available, but the paperback is cheaper anyway. Treating Dissociative Identity Disorder > Customer Review #3: Best book Ive read on the subject.

The International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems continues to list it as Multiple Personality Disorder. Multiplicity demonic possession and two-spirits. Indeed, in several cases, doctors have resorted to exorcisms in order to treat DID. The very existence of DID is questioned by some doctors and scientists. The growing consensus among most doctors and scientists is that DID exists, but that it is an iatrogenic ("caused by doctors") illness that is generally created by suggestion or self-suggestion. A few psychiatrists continue to claim that it is a severe illness that cannot be created in adult life, brought on by extreme abuse in childhood. Carl E. Lockhart was convicted of sexual assault in the first degree, battery, burglary, and assault during the commission of a felony. State v. Lockhart , 208 W.Va. 622 (2000). Lockhart contended that the court committed error by not allowing him to present evidence that he suffered from the Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) which, he claimed, rendered him insane at the time of the offense. [For a general description of multiple personalities, see Andre Moenssens, et al, SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE IN CIVIL AND CRIMINAL CASES, 4th ed., Foundation Press, at pp. 1127-1129.]
The Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia had to determine first, whether or not DID could be a basis for an insanity defense. The court determined that it could pass the hurdles of admissibility of scientific evidence reliability and relevance. West Virginia Rules of Evidence, Rule 702.
    I. Relevance
On the subject of relevance, the court noted that evidence is relevant if it helps to make any fact of consequence more probable or less probable. To be found guilty of a crime, one must have the ability to conduct his/her actions in conformance with the requirements of the law and also appreciate the wrongfulness of such actions. If a defendant's state of mind does not fit this definition of sanity, then the defendant must be found not guilty by reason of insanity. A defendant who has been diagnosed with Multiple Personality Disorder (or DID) may not meet the requisite standard for sanity. Since one must be criminally sane to be found guilty of a crime, any evidence shedding light on the defendant's state of mind at the time of the offense is relevant.
